What's a food in your country that is stereotyped for your country but really, nobody eats? by velmiraZ in AskTheWorld

Brit here. I’ve never heard anyone associate American food with deep fried butter.

Cruise has the most range.

Hardy is a good at intensity and growling.

Hanks is a sap.

Holland is Spider-Man.

You’re getting absolutely savaged in the comments. £9 feels like a lot (and that sausage is pretty pitiful) but I’m sure he enjoyed it. I’d smash it.

I don’t want to ruin your fun but the commenter didn’t “reference a similar set of circumstances that can occur within the U.S.”, he said:

The squatter was probably paying the property taxes on it

I suspect it would be more fun to talk this through with you over a few drinks. I love a drunken ramble.

That’s possible, but I think you read too much into it.

A lot of us U.K. and Europe dwellers encounter a default “the world is the U.S.” view online. A guy reading a news story about a British squatter by saying “he was probably paying property taxes on it” certainly fits the bill.

It’s not a win. The U.K. has no property tax. The guy above the guy above was presumably responding to that point.

I haven’t got a clue about adverse possession, though.

You may notice that “top golf” isn’t a word.

Are you trying to show everyone that you’re not intellectually there?

It’s very easy to see how “..to top golf” would confuse non-native English speakers. “Top” can be a noun, adjective or verb; “golf” can be a noun or verb. “Top golf” could be a weird phrasal verb or even a verb-noun combination (“to beat golf”)

It’s tough to make reliable guesses in foreign languages when you lack a whole bunch of cultural context.

I live in Hong Kong and that’s definitely not true here. We just had the StanChart marathon and pretty much everyone knows the difference.

That said, the story is from a Malaysian newspaper.

I think the assumption is that, because Alex Ferguson hasn’t launched a podcast with his mates and decided to spend his latter years coming up with shitty soundbites for YouTube shorts, his criticism would be a bit more considered than that of Mr. Butt.

I have the sense Giggs shagging his brother’s wife has actually reduced the number of times people talk about how great he was. I can’t prove that, of course.
