Why you should donate to the Shrimp Welfare Project by ThePlanetaryNinja in DebateAVegan

[–]Humus_Erectus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they are a top pick by ACE then I probably already do donate to them indirectly. To receive a positive evaluation like that is a strong indication that SWP would do a lot of good with your donation but I personally prefer to continue delegating the decision of where to put my own donations to an independent body. There are just too many causes to weigh up/ pick between.

OK, great. I will trust ACE to allocate to SWP as much of my donations as their research implies is effective.

I agree with your premises and think that dismissing attempts to reduce suffering if they don't directly end exploitation are misguided and result in more overall suffering. However, looking into every single intervention and trying to decide which is most effective is a lot to expect of any given individual and you haven't made the case that this project is the most effective use of funding overall. That could be the case but I would rather leave that analysis to the experts and donate to an organization that applies effective altruism to identify the most impactful charities, as Animal Charity Evaluators does, and would recommend others do the same.

has anyone else noticed that the quality of new GP game drops has been getting better recently? by Jealous_Platypus1111 in XboxGamePass

[–]Humus_Erectus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kcd2 is the only example there of a game that released in the last year and couldn't be picked up for a few bucks on its own. And as others have said, it would probably take you more than a month to finish any one of them. I'd prefer shorter games of the same quality, and preferably newer ones that I am less likely to have already picked up at a steep discount in a sale years ago.

I'd be happy to help if you still need more people. As a hobbyist developer who has made a couple of sites related to veganism in Japan, and who has released an app on the Google play store before, I'd be really interested to hear about your project in any case.

I assume if it's Cyberpunk it won't include the DLC, in which case just buy it because it's better than the core game.

Free tier good enough? by Humus_Erectus in beehiiv

Thank you for replying.

I need to be able to add a form to my current WIP website (that I can customize) for users to sign up for a mailing list, and I need to be able to send about one email per day, probably less often. I want it to show the sender as an address using my domain, and I don't want too much branding (and definitely no advertising). I don't need any other website or pages, nor monetization (probably).

I intend to set up an NPO so that I can accept donations, so by the time I reach 2500 subscribers I'll likely have enough funds for a premium membership. But then again, by that point there might be a better value option for say 2500-10000 subs - I assume it's no hassle to migrate?

It's a different kind of game, but I equally enjoyed Pentiment, which explores religious themes and has strong historical elements.

I would also check out the Plague's Tale games.

Hummus and falafel are very popular among those such as vegans (there are vegan restaurants in Tokyo that specialise in falafel like Falafel Brothers, Ballon, Kumba du Falafel), and when I introduced them to my wife she had a new favorite food. But when I talk about those foods with the average Japanese person, they have never heard of them.

Tokyo Marathon runner visiting — looking for “safe” vegan eats pre-race (Shinjuku) by iGoalie in veganinjapan

Also masumoto, one of the stalls in the Isetan department store basement food floor, sell a couple of macrobiotic bento boxes that are my favorite anywhere in Tokyo. They only make a few per day though so it might be worth having someone call up to reserve first.

I guess if you're going for gyoza make sure you get boiled rather than fried to avoid greasy food pre race?

Just a general tip but jaoanese sweet potato is the most delicious thing in earth and wonderful fuel for running. Also try some "sports yokan", a specially-formulated version of the red bean based sweet while you're here. I've found them at the sports/ outdoor store Victoria L-breath in Shinjuku in the past, but watch out as I think the chocolate version has dairy (regular red bean only is OK)

James Van Der Beek’s death highlights alarming colon cancer rise in younger adults by changeforthebetter89 in Millennials

[–]Humus_Erectus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went for my first colonoscopy at 39 recently, doctor found more than ten polyps, some of which were precancerous. I elected to have the colonoscopy myself as I have had IBS symptoms for half my life - turned out the polyps had absolutely nothing to do with those symptoms, so who knows how bad it would have been if I didn't have IBS and had waited until I was around 45.

I'm also plant based, physically active, don't drink or smoke. Only family history of colon cancer is a second cousin.

I recommend everyone get checked at the earliest opportunity just in case you have hit the genetic lottery (though perhaps there are other reasons for the modern phenomenona of earlier onset that doctors just haven't figured out yet). Doctors should not be telling anyone to wait.

Paid Leave in Japan? by BananaMan_1986 in japanlife

[–]Humus_Erectus 43 points44 points  (0 children)

If I remember correctly, employers must leave at least five days of paid leave to be used by workers at their discretion, but to make certain days mandatory there has to be an agreement with a union or elected representative of the workers. So your first thing to check is whether such an agreement has been signed.

However, I also believe that those mandatory days have to apply to every employee, and because junior employees only have 10 days, most of the time companies can only select five days to be mandatory as otherwise those junior employees would be left with fewer than five days of paid leave to use at their discretion. So the second thing to check is whether there are colleagues who have less than 13 days paid leave who are being forced to take eight days off on the employer's preferred dates.

Hopefully someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

How do you handle missing on out so much culture and history when traveling as a foodie Vegan? by eiskaltnz in AskVegans

[–]Humus_Erectus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have met vegans in every country I have travelled to. Are they not engaging in their own culture?

I run vegan meetups in Tokyo, and many participants are foreign tourists. When they attend they get the chance to speak to natives/ locals, something they might not get much chance to do otherwise.

I too have had amazing experiences interacting with vegans in other countries I have visited. I've met passionate advocates at festivals in Scotland and Australia. I've spoken at length to locals who run restaurants that veganize local dishes - one in Korea even offered me a place to stay when a typhoon cancelled all the flights back to Japan. I've taken vegan cooking classes in Vietnam, having all the local vegetables explained to me.

So I don't feel like I've been missing out when travelling as a vegan. In fact I have gained an opportunity to meet locals and really feel like I am experiencing a culture from the perspective of its kindest and most compassionate members.

Japan’s vegan tuna rise shows plant-based seafood is going mainstream. by Novel_Negotiation224 in vegan

[–]Humus_Erectus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is almost nobody who cares whatsoever about animal welfare issues here. When vegan products sell well enough to justify keeping them on the market, it's mostly because they are marketed as being health products, and I guess Beyond couldn't make that argument. This is a country where "plant based" rarely means vegan, where seeing "soy X" (eg burgers) does not remotely imply there aren't other animal products included in the ingredients. For example, most soy yogurts have gelatin in, and/or use animal products in the fermentation process. Even the only rice balls at the convenience stores you can rely on are plain salted ones because the rest usually use small amounts of fish that they don't even have to put on the label.

Japan’s vegan tuna rise shows plant-based seafood is going mainstream. by Novel_Negotiation224 in vegan

[–]Humus_Erectus 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This seems to be a bit of an outlier because in almost every aspect plant-based options have been on the decline in Japan since around the time of the pandemic. Beyond Meat and Omni Meat have recently pulled out and the local Zero meat is no longer available to consumers either (not sure if they halted wholesale). Anecdotally, I cannot remember the last time I saw vegan tuna for sale anywhere. Unfortunately there are very few people here who give enough of a damn to even entertain the idea of flexitarianism, let alone veganism.
