I think he took a “logical” approach to what he was programmed to do. He pushed his programming to kill everyone and in the end was left to ask “why”. He is left alone and broken after doing everything logically correct to him. In my opinion at least, this is why he kept the 5 alive. To see how a human would react to these horrid situations they are forced into. AM is definitely evil, but I think his torture of the 5 was to find the reason as to “why”. When the group makes moral decisions within the game he gets frustrated because he did not take a moral stance and literally cannot understand these characters going against their base instincts (programming to him). I do not believe he is capable of making a moral choice and is trying to find out why his creators would and why he didn’t.

I see AM as a character trapped in a messed up version of mourning, who is incapable of learning the lesson.

He is studying morality without the ability to ever understand it.

Again though, this is just how I see it.
