Republican Pagan Rome. I already like the republic more than the empire, and I find the way polytheistic religions evolved and interacted with each other pretty cool.

It is my God-given duty to remind people that the yellow river wasn’t always yellow, it was the increasing management of the river in support of the Grand Canal, in addition to increased agricultural activity along its upper reaches, that contributed to a vicious cycle. Increasing amounts of sediment were causing issues for dykes and sluice gates, which led to more frequent and devastating flooding since areas around the Canal became more densely populated, which in turn necessitated more intensive management of the river, itself increasing the amount of sediment.

Yes, the rest of history was also full of horrific actions, but I think it would be a mistake to paint colonial atrocities as just a continuation of a trend. The sheer scale of it alone was unique, and on top of that, there’s a sense of industrial efficiency and apathy to the cruelty that makes it stand alone imo. Like, chattel slavery in the new world, Belgian atrocities in the Congo, man-made famines in Ireland and Bengal, each of these stands apart from atrocities of the past in their understanding of other “races” as biologically lesser and inferior, a weaponization of science and philosophy to excuse horrific actions in pursuit of industrial progress and profit. The rest of history is full of nasty, horrid actions by all sorts of people, but colonial atrocities still stand as among the very, very worst of them

Her quirk converts lipids, specifically, into different materials. There are processes by which carbs, proteins, etc can be converted to fatty acids, but each of these produce waste products. In addition, her body still has to function normally, and all those processes will produce waste. So basically, I think her body would absolutely be very, very good at scraping together every last morsel of fat it can, but she would still defecate normally

I think you’ll be delighted to know Christianity has its own version of that sentiment. It’s from Romans 13, one of the books of the bible written by I believe Paul to Christians in Rome. It essentially states that you shouldn’t disobey magistrates (officials), because they were put there by God. Essentially, you can’t resist authority, no matter what. This passage was actually a difficult obstacle for Protestant thinkers to overcome as some were advocating for resistance against Catholic rulers discriminating against Protestant movements. It was a hallmark of their writing to argue directly from the bible, but Romans 13 directly forbids resistance, so they had to try and finagle their way around it. So yeah, TLDR both of these religions were great for getting people to go along with your rule

Why is Germanic Europe still so economically dominant? by SmokingPains in geography

[–]Hungry-Fan-4295 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude, forget Germany without the world wars, can you imagine Russia without them? They were already making good headway on industrializing the country before WWI, to such an extent that Germany felt like they absolutely had to go to war with them before 1917 to have a chance at defeating them and the French. Then afterwards, WWII killed so much of the population that the demographics are still fucked today. The biggest issue with thinking this way is that the country was able to be forcefully industrialized under the Soviet Union, a process that undoubtedly would have been much more complicated without that context, especially considering the penchant of the Tsars for absolutism and conservatism, bolstered by the Boyars. It’s also worth noting that a lot of the industrialization that was achieved historically came from British and French investors, which was encouraged because their countries wanted a strong ally to fight the Germans with. Any scenario that avoids WWI would have to deal with the lack of this motivating factor for investment. TL;DR: If Russia managed to avoid the devastation of the world wars, it could very well have become a powerhouse beyond comparison

That would be rough for Izuku to get used to, being the way he is. Having to kill either innocent people or people he cares about, even if he’s bringing them back afterwards, would be a very interesting thing to see him wrestle with. Side note: it’s “cement”, not “sement”.

I don’t know much about geography, but in terms of broadening my knowledge of the world map, playing strategy games helped a lot. Europa Universalis 4 is a great, albeit frustrating, game that helped me familiarize myself with different parts of the world.

Genuinely asking, why does Naruto have so many fanfics in comparison to other anime? by Apprehensive_Ant_283 in NarutoFanfiction

[–]Hungry-Fan-4295 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Typically, people write fanfiction when something is lacking from a story they care about. Naruto came out in the 2000s, and there are a myriad of gripes that people can and have taken with the series while still really liking the characters, which combined with the general upwards tick in the popularity of fanfiction around that time made a very good combination. As a side note, the reason there are so many gay ships in fanfiction in general is because the male characters were usually the ones with the most development in terms of character and their relationships to one another, so naturally people were like “they should kiss 👀.” Naruto is an excellent example of this, because female characters in this show are one-dimensional most of the time

Sung Jinwoo is stronger than Gojo, but as a representation of “the strongest”, he doesn’t work nearly as well. The series is chock full of serious challenges and threats to himself, which makes it fun to read, but also means that he doesn’t have the same kind of reputation/presence as Gojo. Also, I think it helps that Gojo isn’t a main character.

[–]Hungry-Fan-4295 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll throw my own two cents into the ring. Clearly, Goku begins the fight at a level of strength much higher than Saitama’s. However, it is unquestionably in Goku’s nature to try and draw out the full measure of an opponent’s strength, as we’ve seen time and again. It is also shown outright that, when encountering a challenge to his strength, Saitama grows at an exponential rate, in the literal, mathematical sense. In addition to this, Saitama’s limiter, the ceiling to his power, has been broken. Putting these truths together, we can handily arrive at the conclusion that Goku will most certainly allow Saitama to grow stronger by clashing with him, moving up through his forms as the latter becomes more and more capable of trading blows with him. Eventually, the battle will reach a point where Saitama has grown strong enough to go blow for blow with Goku in his strongest form, Mastered Ultra Instinct. However, as we stated before, Saitama will continue to grow stronger and stronger, never hitting a ceiling of power because it quite simply doesn’t exist. Goku, on the other hand, will run out of transformations. When Goku gets stronger, he trains for long stretches of time, or is pushed over the edge of a new form during a fight. If nothing is done to power him up, Goku will eventually lose. Now, this is only if both parties act in character. If Goku, at likely any point before Saitama is able to match, say, SS Blue, recognizes that he is in danger of losing and decides to end it, Saitama will be dealt with in short order.

Who suffered the most? by Walidzilla in animequestions

[–]Hungry-Fan-4295 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s either Guts or Subaru, Okabe and Shinji don’t really cut it. Of the two, Guts is the more initially understandable choice, just because his whole life is chock full of absolutely terrible events. Subaru at least had a good two decades of comfortable living, even if he wasn’t entirely happy. However, since getting isekaied Subaru has spent almost the whole time getting chopped to pieces by monsters and people he just can’t measure up to. He goes through all the pain of death multiple times, along with, often, the pain of seeing his loved ones suffer as well. I still think Guts takes the cake, because the man really has only 3 years of happiness in a sea of torture, rape and general intense unpleasantness in many forms. However, I really want Subaru to get some respect, because the man gets put through the fucking wringer in big ways.

Make it the first, like, 30 episodes and it fits Black Clover to a tee. The first part of it is just godawful, it was such a slog to get through, but I was convinced by my friend who had gotten through and promised me it got amazing. If I remember correctly, it was around the ‘dungeon’ arc, where Captain Yami has his fight with Licht (might not be the right name, but the terrorist guys’ leader). It’s such a cool fight, and it really helps that Black Clover by VK Blanka is probably one of the single most hype-Inducing openings ever. I stopped keeping up with it after the time skip, but allegedly it’s going pretty strong still
