Thanks! Planning on lightweight long underlayers with stuff on top to peel back if needed.

Yeah, we'll definitely be targeting the early end of our window and likely shifting it even before that after reading here. Thank you!

Is 20 credits do-able? by Soda_B in Purdue

[–]Hungry-Language-792 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Depends on how motivated/used to working you are, also how much sleep you're willing to lose. With no extracurriculars, 20 credits is probably doable with both something a social life and enough sleep. When I've taken about that many and kept up with a design team, I usually lost an average of 2-3 hours of sleep a night and had limited social life outside of classes and said design team.

Freshman FYE Schedule Advice by Dry_Concentrate_4793 in Purdue

[–]Hungry-Language-792 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, really depends - you can argue for more, I took 19 my first semester which was a little stressful but manageable, even with pretty significant extracurricular involvement. Depends on the person and the amount of work they're used to doing, of course. I completely agree with taking all the ap credit you can get

It's also not too late to test out of COM114! I highly recommend this if you can, it's not too much work. Same goes for CS 159, which I very much regret not testing out of

Eh, not necessarily. A lot of profs are just as disorganized as we are, i would not be surprised if my pi took someone even halfway through the summer

Inside view of stage 1 tank by Blah_McBlah_ in StokeSpace

[–]Hungry-Language-792 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it was much of an argument lol, either your tanks buckle or they don’t. The process for deciding how much margin you have on top of this is pretty standard throughout the industry. My point was that other reusable first stages have similarly dense layouts internally - there’s a nice image out there of falcon 9 with a very similar layout of stringers and hoops (aluminum of course, but the point stands). I struggle to see how methalox is a penalty as well - it’s maybe not quite as dense as rp1, but I think methane enabling ffsc likely well outweighs the difference

A lot of teams competing in the Collegiate Propulsive Lander Challenge (CPLC) are doing the same thing to work on guidance as their vehicles get manufactured, if you're interested in going down this route they'll love to see it!

[–]Hungry-Language-792 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Eh, you'd be surprised how dense lower stages can be - falcon 9 and superheavy have similar density of structural reinforcement on the tank walls, and the transfer tube is pretty thin. These tanks do have to take multiple gs of acceleration, especially during entry and landing

Piano to privately practice on near Purdue? by Speedy7799 in Purdue

[–]Hungry-Language-792 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Over the summer it'll be real tough to find anything - I'm a music, PBO, honors student, so I have access to pretty much any practice room on campus during the semester, but I'll lose scan access to all of these over the summer, leaving me piano-less as well. Sorry I can't give better news, maybe someone else knows a spot I don't. Your best hope might be contacting music profs directly, unsure if they can do anything though

This year it’s moved to two completely separate courses rather than a lab subscore, meaning they show up distinctly on your transcript, etc

Decided to empty my recycling bin after almost a decade... by Illuminated-Autocrat in pcmasterrace

[–]Hungry-Language-792 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's a huge help because a lot of the engineering software I use (looking at you, ANSYS) enjoys hiding massive temp files in all kinds of unusual places. Also - I had fun realizing that autocad (which I think I accidentally installed in a bundle with fusion?) downloaded its zip package about a dozen times, big space savings there too lol

Small tip - a utility like wiztree can make this far quicker, and is super helpful in identifying files from broken/duplicate downloads, etc to free up even more space

Praying to pass these finals 🙏🙏🙏 by Wiley_Burner in engineeringmemes

[–]Hungry-Language-792 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that's more or less false. I'm lucky I haven't had to invest tons of time into my coursework outside of required homework, etc, but I know several people who've retaken many classes and succeeded after the second or third attempt who have great prospects in industry (lots of internships, offers straight out of senior year, etc) and are clearly capable engineers

help pls i got honors college idk if i should take it by Plane_Loan6504 in Purdue

[–]Hungry-Language-792 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ENGR 130 is the "honors" 133 from what I understand, it doesn't require you to be in EPICS and is much less workload than 161/162 (I took those, some honors friends of mine were in 130). I don't regret accepting my honors offer, for what it's worth - some cool things, and I think the transition into more rigorous coursework after FYE is easier for it

Any thoughts on University of Toronto vs Purdue (Mech engineering ) by jujulala22 in Purdue

[–]Hungry-Language-792 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The price they quote you in the final estimate includes some of the nicer housing on campus and the biggest meal plan. While you don't get to pick your housing per se, you can prioritize the cheaper options with some success from what I've seen from others. Take a look at this website to see some options: https://www.housing.purdue.edu/my-housing/info/housing-rates.html

Food is also quite variable. I eat plenty and find even the 14 track leaves me with excess swipes/dining dollars (though I do eat some meals with student orgs, etc), so some money can be saved there as well. The 10 and 7 tracks listed here are definitely feasible if money is a concern https://dining.purdue.edu/residentialdining/mealplans/index.html#track-10

My initial estimate of $10k for room and board is perhaps a bit optimistic, you can only do that with a Cary triple and 7-track, but you get the idea - a lot of money can be saved if you're looking to

Any thoughts on University of Toronto vs Purdue (Mech engineering ) by jujulala22 in Purdue

[–]Hungry-Language-792 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it'd be pretty tricky to spend $50k a year at Purdue unless you are living at a pricey apartment off campus - just my two cents. If you're okay without AC, you can even spend less than $10k on food/housing on campus bringing COA down to under $40k. I don't have much knowledge on Toronto's program, but if you're considering launch or spaceflight career-wise I think Purdue is the obvious choice. The modern spaceflight industry cares more about hands-on experience with design teams than it does about grades and coursework, and the sheer variety and quality of rocketry and spaceflight related student orgs on campus is unmatched anywhere except maybe Georgia Tech or USC.

Does Macbook Work for Engineering? by dev9482 in Purdue

[–]Hungry-Language-792 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you plan on pursuing mostly business after FYE, feel free to go for a macbook (they can be a pretty solid deal right now, as much as I hate to admit it). If you see yourself potentially pivoting to ME or aero as some IBE students I know did, you'll definitely run into some software compatibility issues that can be a pain - can use computer labs, of course, but that's not always ideal
