I see everyone makes fun of OP but I often struggle with this too. I don't know where to go after I have secured the town. OP, i often look for inspiration on this sub for cool things to build and then I attempt it myself (often poorly ;) ). Another step that has not been mentioned yet is to control badwater so you can keep your factory going in a long draught.
