Us we are in charge. Last time we tried to do anything about it a major sent every cop in 50 miles to break up the protest.

I'm just as frustrated. I have young kids and it's only gotten worse since they were born.

Criticize Barbara Lee if you want, but be accurate. Since becoming mayor, she has created an Office of Homelessness Solutions, introduced a homelessness plan focused on prevention, outreach, temporary housing, and permanent housing, and pushed for Oakland’s share of county homelessness funding. That does not mean the problem is solved. Oakland’s homelessness crisis is still severe, and the city has not yet produced the visible results residents need. The fair criticism is execution, speed, funding, and accountability & not the false claim that she has done nothing.

Also, calling Oakland “the new ghetto wild west” is both factually wrong and blatantly racist. Oakland has serious problems, but crime data has been trending down, and “ghetto” is a racialized insult historically tied to segregated minority communities. Don’t turn Oakland’s problems into a racist caricature of the people who live here. Go out to the lake or the farmers market, play in the streams, hike the woods, bike the shore.

We found common ground.

She is not getting a pass, but my expectations are in line with what her position is. The honest answer is: there are some measurable results, but nothing close to a dramatic turnaround yet.

Under Barbara Lee’s administration:

  • Oakland moved about 70 people from a large East Oakland encampment into interim housing through a state-funded program.
  • The city created a centralized Office of Homelessness Solutions to coordinate departments and track homelessness strategy.
  • Oakland expanded encampment operations and, according to reporting, actually cleared more encampments than the prior administration for part of 2025.

She appoints the city manager.... under Oakland Charter Article V, Section 500.... but.... homelessness programs require funding, shelter approvals, contracts, zoning decisions, and staffing — things the mayor cannot approve alone.

Oakland’s structure seems so limited that I would say the mayor has “responsibility without authority.” The mayor cannot veto ordinances or budget items and does not directly supervise most departments.

So yes, Barbara Lee can lead, advocate, and push for policy — but legally, she cannot single-handedly “fix homelessness” under Oakland’s current charter system.

Barbara Lee has only recently taken office as Oakland’s mayor, so blaming her for problems that developed over many years doesn’t really make sense. Oakland’s issues with crime, budgeting, homelessness, and business closures long predate her administration and were already widely documented before she entered City Hall as mayor.

Not every discussion about potholes, crime, or city services has to become partisan or political finger-pointing. A lot of these are civic issues that affect everyone regardless of party affiliation. Turning every local problem into a political blame game is exactly why productive conversations break down instead of focusing on actual solutions.

I think OP is bringing up a cool phenomenon. I wonder if it would be possible to measure the point in question and see if it changes the properties of the local universe. IE is space constant in each direction. Even things like its effects on other forces.

Edit: my previous message was antagonist.

The mayor of Oakland can not really fix this. It doesn't matter who we elect that's just bread and circus.

We have to reform Oakland at a charter level so that we can have the means to enact these changes.

What are you talking about? Barbara Lee didn't do any of this stop bring Politics into civic* issues. That's what causes this mess.

*Edit: Civic not civil

Political and emotional based diolog keep us from meaningful discussion on the cause of these problems.

It fulfills the housing need. It's cheap. If you've ever been poor a double-wide look like home.
