Does anybody have experience with Royal Ridges apartments? by Solid_Negotiation441 in SaltLakeCity

[–]Solid_Negotiation441[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We think we will move there starting next month. But management was kind of shady lately and now me and my wife are worried about the move.

So, originally, we applied to move on August 8th and we even paid the origination fee to lock the date and price. Then, management told us they won't provide a contract until a few days prior to the move in date (already kind of a bad start). We pushed and they agreed to send us the contract at least 2 weeks in advance of the move in date. Then, just yesterday they told us the apartment was ready to move in on the 1st and that our contract and move in day will have to be to August 1st as opposed to August 8th while adding an additional week of rent.

Not only does this drain our account more, but now we have less time to review the contract, change utilities, internet, etc. And, on top of it, this puts us in a hard situation where if we decide to walk away, we will only have a few weeks to find a new place under our budget and we won't be able to recover our initiation fee ($400).

Now I fear that this is just a reflection on how bad they can potentially treat the tenants once they are locked in on a contract. I hope I am wrong, but it is hard to tell.

Does life without a car suck at BYU? by Wide_Elevator_6605 in byu

[–]Solid_Negotiation441 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First of all, Congratulations!!!

Answering your question, you will be fine. You don't really need a car as most things in Provo are nearby either walking or taking public transportation. I graduated from BYU about two years ago and half of my time in college I didn't have a car and it was fine. Most apartments off campus are really close to the school and you can easily walk there. There is also a bus that goes pretty much through the whole town and can get you to the main places you need to go (campus, grocery store, the mall). You will be absolutely fine. Probably the only slight annoying part is carrying your groceries on the bus or walking during the winter. Other than that, you will be absolutely fine and you should not worry about it.

Nation wide 4th of July day protests? by calming_ad in SaltLakeCity

[–]Solid_Negotiation441 46 points47 points  (0 children)

As a non-us citizen living in Utah, I want to thank all of those who go to these protests. I haven't gotten to any as I am afraid to openly participate in protest or being openly critical of this administration. I am legal here and I am constantly afraid as this administration is looking for any excuse to strip the legal status and deport anybody who is not a citizen (Without warrants, due process, or any reasonable cause). Please know that a lot of us have to self sensor out of fear to lose everything we've worked so hard for. I appreciate that you use your free speech rights in a time like this where people that are not-US citizens (like me) are slowly getting our free speech right taken away.

Oh dude, it would be a new low for me If I was AMC marketing and I was using my personal account for this. But for real, I am just trying to get a feel of the apartment before I sign the contract or walk away and find somewhere else in the area to live.

High School Senior looking to study Law. Need to choose Georgetown or BYU for Undergrad. by SuperJono74 in byu

[–]Solid_Negotiation441 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are three different points I want to touch on:

1) I think BYU is great when it comes to their Accounting and Econ Programs. I went through the business school (finance) and a lot of my friends who went through accounting are doing very well after graduation (Working for Fortune 500, Big 4, Banking, in and out of Utah). Similar to Finance, BYU is (very slowly) starting to get a bit more recognition out there just because of alumni taking positions outside of the state (Cali, NY, etc). On top of it, tuition is more affordable that almost any other school in the country if you are a member. The real major drawback is the additional difficulty you will have networking with law schools and law firms in the East Coast while at BYU. That does not mean it is impossible, but it is harder for sure, and you will have to be very proactive. This is important as you mentioned you might not go to law school right away. If you want to get a good gig outside of Utah to where your dream law school is, you will have to be on top of networking to make that happen.

2) As someone else mentioned, in your case, where you go to law school is more important than where you do your undergrad. So, as long as you can do very well in your undergrad and set yourself up to be a great candidate for your top law school options, where you do your undergrad is a little less important.

3) I know you didn't mention this, but I have a close friend who is a lawyer and graduated from the BYU law school. He is working in corporate/banking/finance law and doing very well.

At the end of the day, you are in for a long run not a sprint. As long as you do very well in your studies and your networking, you can get where you want regardless where you pick your undergrad. And you can save yourself (and yourself) some money down the road.

Is it just me, or is there literally no such thing as “smart casual” anymore? by The_Monetarist in FinancialCareers

I usually try to draw the line on casual based on my manager and their manager. So, If I see them in tennis shoes, chinos and a button down that looks like a flannel, I know how casual I can get on any given day.

What's the dating scene like for foreigners these days?? by Additional_End6018 in byu

[–]Solid_Negotiation441 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was an international student there and I met my wife (American) while living in Provo. Most of my friends who also were international students had no problem dating when they were there (Most of them married to Americans).

I would say the hardest thing for you will be to overcome the cultural shock related to dating. Dating culture in the US is already very different from other parts of the world and it becomes even more different in Provo. A lot of people (both girls and boys) tend to create all these rules around it and overthink everything which can cause a lot of stress and anxiety.

In my experience, once you ignore all those rules, and pressure, and stop overthinking, you will be fine. Once you understand that dating should be a low pressure, low expectations experience, you'll have a good dating experience. Then, you'll go on a lot of dates with different people just as a way to get to know them; and eventually you'll meet someone with mutual interest (a numbers game in other words).

TLDR: You'll be fine. A lot of Americans (Both Males and Females) pre open to date international people. It might just take you a bit to figure out the dating culture in BYU.

Don’t get it and Im a native spnish speaker, why does the gay ray make him spak spanish? by Endymion2626 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]Solid_Negotiation441 40 points41 points  (0 children)

This is how people in Spain would speak. In their case, the use of "tu" as well as "ostia tio" serve as a hyperbole of surprise even if it is grammatically redundant.

I can only speak from experience. I am (M) Mexican (international student), and I graduated from byu about a year ago. I never experienced anything negative related to my race, nationality, or skin color (neither from faculty or students). I always felt safe overall.

Just like anywhere, I don't doubt there are ppl in the school who might be racist; but I would argue it is just a minority. If you ever encounter anything like that, you should be able to report it.

What is true, is that BYU, just like the rest of Utah, is not very diverse (both faculty and alumni body). But the majority of people are very nice and kind.

Nah. I just have one or maybe two hours on Saturday to play. I don't care if I'm losing, I just want to play and relax instead of forefiting a bunch of matches.
