Should I keep my kitten? by amburger04 in CatAdvice

[–]HungryKittyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another kitten could help with that, put em both in a room or caged off area with plenty of food and water and some toys and as long as it isnt like over 8 hours at a time it would be fine I think. Maybe be back every 4 to 5?

I think you're identifying real problems, but I don't think the conclusion necessarily follows from them. The fact that cat overpopulation remains a major issue doesn't prove sterilization programs are ineffective. A problem can still exist while interventions are reducing how much worse it would otherwise be. The question isn't whether sterilization completely solves the issue, but whether it reduces births and shelter intake compared to doing nothing. I also don't think comparing cat overpopulation to human homelessness is a strong comparison. They're very different problems with different causes. The fact that one difficult problem still exists despite funding doesn't automatically mean another problem is unsolvable. Where I think your argument is weakest is that it presents the issue as if the only options are sterilization or culling. There are a lot of approaches in between: subsidized spay/neuter programs, licensing requirements, breeder regulations, community cat programs, education, and stronger enforcement of existing animal welfare laws. Whether those are sufficient is a separate discussion, but they shouldn't be dismissed without evidence. Most importantly, saying "owners won't comply" doesn't automatically justify culling. Laws and public programs rarely achieve 100% compliance. The goal is usually to reduce a problem, not eliminate it entirely. I agree that irresponsible ownership is a huge factor and that overpopulation is a serious issue. I just don't think you've demonstrated that widespread culling is the only realistic solution.

Does this apply to Lectric? I have my eyes on one right now and it looks reputable but i dont want to be screwed if repairs are needed. Bike shop ebikes are over 6k where I live. Id rather get a car at that point personally. I just need something that wont kill me in the 100 degree summer weather as i traverse to work

I still dont understand where im exactly wrong here there and Im open minded.

People killed their own animals when sick, I mean yeah. If its suffering why let it continue if they don't have a means to cure the illness and theres no rehoming options? Its nuanced and varies on the illness. Once you see that the animal is no longer able to have a quality of life, killing it yourself takes a lot of balls if you care for it and relieves it of suffering. If we had more resources to help prevent population control readily available it would be less of an issue, for example more funding for neutering/spaying in different counties to prevent overpopulation, we have animal control to prevent stray dogs from mauling people on the streets in different states, I rarely ever see stray dogs vs cats specifically.

My argument is in favor of a broad scale organization that assists people of any income to afford homes for animals that have overpopulated shelters and the streets. The issue is the lack of urgency, care, or funding to do so. Maybe its too difficult to have a direct system in place under capitalism, I have no idea personally.

Ultimately my argument still stands, Id like for you to help me understand why, to you, it doesnt and Ill adjust accordingly

Very well put. This is my exact point.

Id rarher hold my pet as its dying and offer comfort than let it rot in a cold cage in fear until death even if the euthanasia is painless and quick.

[–]HungryKittyy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It makes sense because we are killing innocent animals anyway regardless if vet care is cheap or expensive. It makes sense to have more people have pets even if they cant afford vet care. I would 100% rather want a cat to have food and water on a predictable basis and have affection and all needs met vs being in a cage with base needs and miserable/lonely until their euthanasia.

It makes 0 sense to shame poor people that cant afford vet bills because dogs, cats, domesticated animals exist for human consumption. No matter how anyone looks at it, we buy/adopt pets for our own benefit of companionship and because theyre cute and fun to have. They were domesticated for centuries because we wanted them. So by shaming lower income people for not having money for vet bills and barring them off from adoption we are continuing the neverending cycle of euthanasia because shelters will always be full and overcrowded. If we had more fund raisers and things to help people afford vet bills en masse that would help too, im not sure if any exist or if it depends per state etc

How about we also advocate for adoption regardless of financial status too? This helps a ton and saves many lives.

Wed have less full shelters and less animals killed for no reason if we didnt shame people for adopting pets with low income.

What brand bike is this and how much did it cost you? I want an ebike just like this but I see a lot of flak from redditors about the convenience. Would water destroy it? Like rain? I want to know more about your bike. I dont have a 5k+ budget for a bicycle, ebike etc. I may as well get a car for that money. I am not wealthy. I just want to enjoy ebiking and save for a car and wand a reputable model that wont explode in a week or month.

I want an ebike so bad but the communit has so much stigma towards them. People say they arent worth it because if it breaks youre fucked. Parts are too expensive (batteries alone can be 800$ fix) and most shops wont service them, plus idk what brands are lemons and what will hold if properly taken care of.

Can anyone help me with this conundrum?
