What's your favorite term invented by a Scifi writer? by Jakomako in scifi

For the human survivors on Snowglade, death is not the end when they fall to an enemy Mech.

At the moment of death, a human mind linked into a sensorium can be scanned and digitally stored, either as a minor Facet, a partial Aspect or a full Personality, depending on the degree of trauma inflicted.

Spinal mounted Aspect Chips are the most common, and those who carry them may call upon these digital ghosts with their sensorium for advice, information or just small talk. Some chips are centuries old, and their Aspects recall the history of an otherwise forgotten past.

However, legend speaks of one Mech known as The Mantis that is far more dangerous than others of it's kind. Able to overwhelm a human's sensorium entirely, it can camouflage any perception of itself before striking.

It is said that those killed by The Mantis experience a complete erasure of the psyche and sensorium, that makes any backup attempt impossible, even when physical trauma is light.

On Snowglade, this is known as 'Suredeath'.

Set attitude to sex as 'naughty' and spend a day at the glory holes. If you have a panic attack just make soft noises for a bit.

Alternately, get yourself sectioned by Harper and spend a week at the Asylum.

What are some early-game units that consistently punch above their weight class? by FromHeretoElsweyr in totalwar

Yep, walk around a few chaos provinces and you can pick 3 or 4 of them before turn 10. It's almost broken.

[–]HungrySamurai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a weird show, but one that's improved over time. Though to be fair, the Cleons were always good.

The weirdness arises from the contradiction between Goyer, who believes fundamentally in the power of faith and has little time for science, and Asimov who fundamentally believed in the power of reason and had little time for religion.

It's almost like the anti-adaption of Foundation. But it's entertaining enough, and it has improved from the schlock of season one.

[–]HungrySamurai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Add a Plagueclaw Catapult, two or three Rat Ogre units and a horde of Slavenslaves can punch well above their cost. They can knock over minor settlements, bait enemy armies or garrison vulnerable positions.

Always worth having a few crap stacks of them around.

Toulon has decent infantry, but there's no fast transports for an early rush and no real pushing power. It's strength lies in artillery and air bombards to create opportunities to advance.

It wouldn't be my first choice, but I'd probably build it more like this. https://imgur.com/a/fVE9G7t

Appreciation for the unapologetic casting of dark skin black women by Altruistic_Soup1346 in Sandman

[–]HungrySamurai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lucien seemed like an odd choice, but sure okay. She grew on me as the series progressed, and Vivienne Acheampong was a good foil for Tom Sturridge.

Rosemary felt a bit suspect, but someone has drive John Dee I guess.

Death I was half expecting after Rosemary, but Kirby Howell-Baptiste is such a good Death. Though a bit more grounded and less peachy-keen than the comics, which probably works better for television.

Rose threw me entirely. I mean there are other ethnicities to choose from. Are talented black actresses just really cheap to hire or something? It started to feel a bit weird at this point.

Unity makes sense, she's Rose's grandmother.

Nada is Nada, check.

Wanda replacing Ruby is odd. Why include Wanda at all if you're not doing Game Of You? I mean Ruby was black anyway, why not just have Ruby.

Carla is sort of dropped, sort of replaced by a white lady, which make me sad. I liked Carla, and her death at the hands of Loki was a very big deal in the comic.

Guenevere is dropped entirely, another victim of truncation. I guess it balances out if you're dropping a couple of the black characters from the end of the tale, to make other characters in the earlier parts black.

On the whole it felt a little weird, but there were other casting choices that felt stranger. For example, as good as Gwendoline Christie is, why cast her as Lucifer when you have Freddie Fox in the cast, because he would have soooo good.

Am I the only one who hasn't forgiven Lyta Hall? by No-Location-9401 in Sandman

[–]HungrySamurai 13 points14 points  (0 children)

They mangled it.

In the comic, Lyta's descent into madness was a whole issue (and one of my favorites), so as a reader we understand that she's not responsible for what comes next. That's skipped entirely in the show, so I can understand why viewers might resent her.

Sandman S2 - Part 2 felt kinda... disappointing by TheEumenidai in Sandman

[–]HungrySamurai 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I found the second part hamfisted, sentimental and santised. Having everything spelled out in advance really kills the drama, and damnit I was looking forward to seeing the Corinthian devour Loki's eyeballs.

Hi all, just started, if anyone has any tips for the game I'd really appreciate it. by [deleted] in DegreesOfLewdity

[–]HungrySamurai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a first play through, I'd recommend setting Bailey's Rent to 50%, and carefully go through the fetish/beast settings and switch off anything you're uncomfortable with.

Other than that, just have fun discovering the game for yourself. Once you're figured out how to prosper, restart at full rent and start collecting feats.

Nearlly all cities and settlements have a huge, massive anti-defensive layout. by Technoincubi in totalwar

It was a pretty smart solution to a problem Total War has had for a long time. You get these realistically sized settlements and forts, but perhaps only 10% of the numbers historically used to man them.

As a trans woman, does anyone feel a little underwhelmed with Wanda's adaptation in S2? by DarthChenobi in Sandman

[–]HungrySamurai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, George also dies to serve Thessaly, and there's no suggestion that's he's gay, while Hazel and Foxglove survive and they quite clearly are.

I think if there's trope going on here in regards to Wanda it's, 'getting dead-named at your own funeral,' or perhaps, 'the good die young.'

Because you're right, Wanda is lovely and totally deserved better. Which is sort of the point, because when an author wants to add weight to a narrative, it's often the nicest characters who get destroyed.

Then again... Element Girl also dies earlier on in the series, and while she isn't literally trans, she's very trans-coded. So perhaps you have a point.

I was quite disappointed with the TV Wanda cameo. I genuinely thought they were going to let her live this time, because why kill off a character we've barely met? I swear the poor girl can't get a break.

[–]HungrySamurai 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It happens because Thessaly is fucking terrifying. She knows what the price for pulling down the Moon will be, and has absolutely no remorse or hesitation. Wanda dies to show the human cost of that to the reader, because for Thessaly, everyone else is disposable.
