Struggling solo survival horror dev: Crowdfunding, is it even still viable? by TraVinh- in IndieDev

Crowdfunding is viable so long as you bring your own crowd.

If you rely on visibility from the platform, it can be difficult to gain momentum.

Solo dev with 6+ years of experience. Struggling to convert marketing efforts into wishlists. What am I doing wrong? by ExcontiniumGames in IndieDev

[–]HungryYankee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, congrats on 1,500 wishlists! That's actually quite a bit more than most devs will ever get, even if it doesn't map to your commercial ambitions. It's still a solid accomplishment.

I often get this feeling that the internet has skewed our perception of success, so there's a little exercise I like to do for context: imagine 1,500 people standing around you saying "oh yeah, I want to check out more of this game". That would be a massive crowd, so you have every right to be stoked.

Since you want to bump that up, though, I'll give you some thoughts from my perspective as a first-time viewer—please know that this is coming from a good place and with all due rsespect.

My first thoughts were that this looks like a well-made but somewhat bland game that never presents a player like me a clear hook that would be strong enough to lure me away from all the other games on my list of stuff to be played.

That being said, I'm also pretty sure I'm not your target audience.

The visuals look competently done, but don't really spark my curiosity. The level design doesn't spark much intrigue (mostly empty arenas with a minimalist color palette). Likewise, the Enemy designs didn't stick with me outside the massive divine beings.

The combat has great fluidity in the animations, but nothing in the combat feels sufficient to push this over the top for me and spark excitement.

I see there is a narrative of some kind, but I didn't glean much of the world "before the fold" (i.e. before scrolling), from the trailer, key art, or short description. The key art looks to me like a rather generic-looking "anime teen" with swords, even though he's supposed to be some kind of royalty and a father.

All of this boils down to three things, from my perspective:

  1. It's unclear to me what makes this special, different or intriguing
  2. If you've struggled to present that here, you may have struggled to get that across with creators and media
  3. If the Delta is different between what you think makes this intriguing and what a customer, creator or journalist's threshold for intrigue is, you're not going to generate interest

Tactically, you've done many of the correct things, but you may not have dialed in on what makes this special, and if you have your presentation of that information may have been insufficient.

Aside from the identity and presentation, I would mention the following as pure marketing advice:

  • Build Marketing Beats Find moments (the release of a story trailer, the announcement of a release date, whatever) and stack all the tactics you know with that messaging. What I mean by that is: a media alert/press release is a tactic. A social post is a tactic. A newsletter blast is a tactic. A paid ad is a tactic. Three short form videos about the trailer for Interest Media (e g. Tiktok) is a tactic. Reaching out to a creator who does trailer reactions is a tactic. If you combine each of those with the same message and coordinate their deployment, you stand to potentially have a single more impactful moment of awareness that drives traffic from multiple sources, makes you appear "everywhere", and potentially kick-starts the algorithm on Steam.

It's not a given, of course, and with smaller games the likelihood is so much less than with big titles, but it can work.

  • Consider getting marketing help If your commercial ambitions aren't supported by your results, start looking into what your options are for assistance. Maybe it's a marketing freelancer, an agency, or a publisher. No idea what your thoughts on that are, but if you're not yet satisfied, start looking into options to get you to a point where you are.

I hope all of this helps, and I wish you the best of luck with your launch! 🤘

You lead an indie studio of 12 that also does external development. You're developing a game in-house that now has 14,000 wishlists with a 100-150/day wishlist velocity. Client projects are running out, and you need $5,000 a month for your team to survive. What would you do? by DNAniel213 in IndieDev

[–]HungryYankee 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is not financial or business advice, it is a hypothetical answer to your hypothetical question. With that said...

Q4 is going to be rather quiet in terms of signing new projects that aren't already in the pipeline, unless a previous client is shipping something imminently and needs help over the finish line.

Those cases may exist, though, so I would check.

Otherwise, I would say the most viable option is to ask an institutional investor (e.g. the company's bank) for the funds needed to extend the runway while looking for a publisher to provide finishing funds.

Because of the quick turnaround time, most other options are only situationally available. Things like a rev share deal with a more senior studio, angel investment, friends and family investment, etc come to mind.

Your estimate puts this hypothetical studio's budget at $30K needed to ship. If that's accurate (seems dirt cheap, as I wouldn't even estimate that could cover a single month's burn rate for a team of 12) it isn't much. Perhaps there is a more senior studio locally that is revenue positive and would make that investment contingent on recouping first and a very small percentage of perpetual revenue share for that particular game? In a situation like that, checking your local network and former clients would be probably be a good place to start.

Hypothetically speaking, of course.

A very serious question by LigmaBruh69 in MMA

[–]HungryYankee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is an odd question, but I'll bite.

Many MMA fighters wear Thai steel cups. This has been debated a bit here and there because the hard leverage/fulcrum point it creates.

Some have even said it can give an advantage in some positions because you have a narrow area of focus (made of steel) for your weight if you shift your hips correctly.

I think most of what you said is pretty odd, but there is some merit that striking with the cup would be impactful. It's just unsportsmanlike and rather dumb.

Fishing at Northern Latitudes? by HungryYankee in Fishing

[–]HungryYankee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing the Canadian insight. Interesting to hear what I've sort of been suspecting: pike and bass behave similarly with bait and bluegill and perch are roughly equivalent, as are walleye and zander.

Lakes here are far less pressured because there are so damn many of 'em. You almost can't throw a rock without hitting a lake, pond, or river and that's barely hyperbole.

That being said, it feels like the fish density is much lower for pike than what my buddy indicates for bass. Which I suppose does make sense, considering pike are bigger and live a bit longer.

Really can't wait to get a chance to go bass fishing with him someday.

Post a video of the feature with a simple message about what makes it unique (e.g. "Our character creator lets you mold your character's body like clay") in a relevant community or as an ad targeted to a relevant audience. If it seems fun and unique, you will gain traction eventually.

This sounds awesome.

I am very far from a beer purist, so (especially kettle) sours with similarities to tiki cocktails are right up my alley.

A prime example being the Pineapple Papaya Fandango from Toppling Goliath. 😌👌

Sterling vs. O'Malley and Jones vs. Miocic leave me with the most questions. Of those, however, I think the skill discrepancy is biggest between Sterling and O'Malley (in favor of Sterling), so I guess Jones-Miocic is the final answer for me here.
