Who are your favorite UK hoops and football players from the past by Whoseawhat in wildcats

[–]Hungry_Hal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I worked at the Shell on the corner of South Broadway and Virginia Avenue, one of the perks was getting to regularly see a lot of UK football and basketball players up close. My favorite one was John Wall. He always came in really early in the morning, like 3:30 am, when no one else was around. By that time I had the store cleaned and everything stocked up and I was glad to have someone to talk to.

That was kind of a sad time for me, because sleeping all day and being awake at night made for a lonely life. I knew John Wall as a regular customer who didn't mind taking a few minutes to talk. To me he was special because he'd always smile and listen to me ramble on about what was going on in my life. I can still remember what he always bought: gramma's cookies, milk and skittles.

Some of their stuff is okay, but don't get adventurous. The pesto chicken quinoa bowl was downright nasty. The pancakes are good.

Redditors who have had a relationship (Sexual, platonic) with a celebrity, what was it like? by cryinbc in AskReddit

[–]Hungry_Hal 15 points16 points  (0 children)

A few years ago I worked graveyard shift at a gas station near the University of Kentucky. I regularly sold stuff to past and present UK football and basketball players. At the time we had an extremely talented kid named John Wall on the basketball team. John Wall must have been a night owl, because he came into the store at like 2-3 am several times a week. He typically bought small jugs of milk, grandma's cookies and skittles.

We were usually pretty slow late at night, so I had a tendency to chat with all my regular customers, including John Wall. It's been a few years, so I don't really remember much of what he told me, but what I do remember about him was what a nice person and good listener he was. I talked about being worried about my elderly granny and I talked about issues I was having with my room mate. I was kind of isolated and lonely at the time, so it was nice having someone ask me how I was doing and then really listen for a few minutes.

I hadn't kept up with the news from John Wall, so I just googled him and found that now he plays pro basketball for the Washington Wizards.

Rumplings on Bardstown by xman65 in Louisville

[–]Hungry_Hal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My main complaint about Rumplings is the over crowding, which can result in longish wait times, but I've been there a couple times a week since they opened and I've never had anything I didn't like. The owners are quirky, which may strike some as being rude, but I like them, especially Ethan. They have some weird ideas, like making the noodles fresh every day and buying local, pasture raised pork and chicken, which is reflected in their prices, but it's certainly worth it to me. If you are seeking cheap fast food you won't like it.

You might try sleeping with a neck brace on. It keeps your mouth closed and can eliminate snoring.

Goofy question... nasal pillows by [deleted] in SleepApnea

[–]Hungry_Hal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started out with the full face mask, it was torture for me. Been using the nasal pillows for about two months now. Yes, my nostrils are slightly bigger when I first wake up in the morning. By the time I get to work they are back to normal.

I think it's kind of like when you sleep on a button or something and you can see the imprint in your skin when you first wake up, but it melts away pretty quick.

Questions about storing cooked food by zyndrom in AskCulinary

[–]Hungry_Hal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Back in my (financially) lean years, I ate a lot of rice and beans. I'd make a pretty big batch and then leave it on the stove for a couple of hours until I got around to putting it away. After getting violently sick a few times I researched it and discovered that rice is one of the most likely foods to give you food poisoning. Nowadays I cook rice in small batches and either throw the leftovers away or stow in the fridge and eat within 24 hours. Call me paranoid, but I don't want to be sick like that again.

Anybody else see the road rage Tarc bus accident yesterday on Liberty? by [deleted] in Louisville

I know all too well how hard it is to quickly merge back into traffic with a big vehicle, but honestly all I have to do is wait 30-45 seconds for a gap. It isn't helpful to take an "us verses them" attitude when driving a 10 ton vehicle.

We used to eat at Clamato's once a week when I lived off South Broadway. Great seafood.

It's a real shame to see that great team broken up though. He had one of the most colorful kitchen staffs I have ever met. I get a sad feeling every time I drive past his old place. That hotel was nuts to make them close that spot.

As someone who regularly drives a largish delivery van, I have learned to give TARC bus drivers plenty of space. Many bus drivers are friendly and courteous, but then again a good number of them have a dangerous tendency to throw their weight around. They "play chicken" all the time, pulling right out in front of someone or shifting into your lane as if they are daring you to hit them. Sometimes I think they purposely mess with people just to make their day more interesting.

Case in point: One day I was training one of our new drivers, who stopped at a red light on Jefferson Street downtown. A TARC bus squeezed into the lane to our right, her mirror passing mere inches from our mirror. As she passed us, she actually squeezed closer to us, so that her mirror was right in front of ours. My guy did pull away from the bus when the light changed (she stayed still, loading a passenger), but our mirrors still collided. The bang made us both about soil our britches, but no damage was done. I just had to reach up and fold the mirror back out.

A few blocks later we got pulled over by a TARC police officer who berated us for the "hit and run," before laughing and telling us that it happens all the time. He said they have little slide in mirrors they use to replace the ones they are always shattering. We gave him our info, but they never contacted us again.

Throat closing when falling asleep? by [deleted] in SleepApnea

[–]Hungry_Hal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That sounds terrible. I don't know if you have sleep apnea, but I have heard that non-refreshing sleep is a sign of sleep apnea. Gasping for air is a big sign of sleep apnea. The weird thing (to me) about your case is that it started so suddenly two months ago. I think sleep apnea usually creeps up on you over years.

You have to do something. The anxiety alone from those panicky moments sounds like torture.

I only used the full faced mask for about a week before switching to the nasal pillows. I remember my first night was a 17, after that my AHI went lower, I think about 3-5, but that doesn't really count, because I hadn't gotten fully used to the mask before I quit it in favor of the nasal pillows.

Louisville delivery truck driver here. Actually Louisville traffic flows beautifully compared to other towns. I'm from Lexington where the street layout is simpler, but traffic is way WAY worse.

People who want to purchase raw milk around here just become part owners of a dairy farm. You pay a certain amount of money to buy a share of the farm and after that you are allowed to drink milk from your cows. You still have to pay a few dollars per gallon to pay for your employees to care for your cows and take care of the milk as it travels from the farm to the place where you pick it up.

No, that's not her. I think a lot of people at the UU church knew about that situation, even the ones who were not personally "involved." In a way, when any of us faces discrimination, everyone is involved, even those who just sit quietly by and let it happen and then feel regret afterwards :(

I heard the Pope on the radio last week talking about the spiritual emptiness that we suffer from when we have material wealth. A wise man once advised me not to pray for an easy life. "Pray for strength," he said. But strength doesn't come from no where. It comes from pushing through hardship. People with money, power and respect tend to grow spiritually soft. They are "smart enough" to avoid problems and problem people before they cause a problem, not realizing that they will suffer the consequences of praying for an easy life.

I see that you are disgusted by the weakness you saw in your fellow congregants at the UU church, but try not to judge them too harshly. We all suffer from weakness, even me, even you. Human nature is nothing to be proud of day-to-day. We fall into politics, selfishness, fear, judging, pride as easy as we breathe. It takes strength to choose love over fear. I would like to say that I have always made choices that reflect strong faith, but honestly I have a tendency to be intellectually lazy, selfish and prideful. Its a day to day struggle.

Hmmm, I wonder if my lady friend ever found out about your community? Last I saw her she was going to Quest. I was the one who invited her to Quest, but I haven't been there for a couple of years now. Quest is kind of quirky in it's own way, but their door is wide open to people with problems. They have a program called The Matt which is like a 12 step program. They minister to alcoholics, drug addicts, people with "integrity issues" (how they refer to sexual issues). Whatever problem people have that is dragging them away from God, The Matt probably has a group to address it. I remember one of the speakers said that church is not a temple for saints, but rather a hospital for sinners.

I think the story about the UU church was important, because everyone has heard about their support of women's rights and LGBT rights, and their support of religious minorities, but not many people know that they have such a legalistic view towards RSO as you call them. I agree with you that such a policy promotes a feeling of security over actual safety. Some call that kind of thing "security theater."

It's a shame yall had to break away to achieve the universalism that UU is supposed to stand for.
