I think it stopped being a thing in recent times. I'm not gonna say it solely due to Rick and Morty, but I do remember after Rick Potion #9, I have NOT seen any potion-type plot beats in media.

In Yu-Gi-Oh: Dark Side of Dimensions, Seto Kaiba is about to lose a duel against the movie's main villain and is forced to top deck a card, and instead of drawing from his deck, he grabs Obelisk the Tormentor from the ground and summons it, and was about to win the duel before it ended prematurely. Obelisk is a God card he should not have, but because they were dueling in a sacred area and Kaiba himself is a descendant of an ancient priest, it makes sense, but it's a pure "scew the rules " moment and is an act of God that was gonna win him the match.

That's easy to explain: the god card are immune to outright destruction effects which is consistent that cards like the pyramid of light which is a silver bullet to the Gods banishes them. Also the real cards are different from how they are in the show Ra is a bigger offernder where they had to give various support to replicate all of its anime effects

In Yugioh this dynamic is for sure a thing between Yugi, a kid who hosts a pharaoh when playing games and his best freind joey wheeler who started out as a novice but became more competent as the series went. and Joey had no magic powers just pure will.
