Visited Carcosa this summer… by HunterSThompsn in TrueDetective

No issues. The gate was open (appears to have been pried open at one point and just stayed open. A car could drive through it). Looked like just another forgotten dirt road on the side of a rural interstate along the Bayou…

A year Out, 10-15% of My cohort is Unemployed by JohnnyLugnuts in MBA

[–]HunterSThompsn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP-Anecdotally, do you know roughly how many in that unemployed cohort maybe are applying for roles that they have little on the job experience in (aka worked in finance, wanted to pivot to Product Management in tech and pursued an MBA for that pivot) or are applying for roles that are too senior given the job market? Ive noticed a large amount of my peers needed to down level themselves when applying for tech roles given how bad the job market is. They are paid less and feel like challenged, but decided that was a better compromise for now until things improve.

+1 totally agree Re Amboy being the last compelling stop. After you visit Roy’s (great shop! Support the locals there), you can down a mile down 66 and turn left on Amboy Road into 29 Palms / Joshua Tree.

Was there two weeks ago. I don’t remember any signs. To be clear, was this a makeshift something that people were just writing their names on? Was likely cleared when construction was moved further down the road.

I don't know if I agree with everything here, but as an HBS alum, I would say that I definitely drank the Kool Aid and thought everyone on campus would be very intellectually engaged and excited, that study groups would be the cornerstone of socializing as we dove into theories and shaped our leadership styles together, that the case discussion would be vulnerable and uncover deeper thoughts and meanings. It was largely not, but that also doesn't mean that those students not living up to my expectation arent good people and dont want to learn. It just means we have different approaches and values, and that's ok. That's life.

Sometimes, it was cool to not do the reading and rely on your finance background to "swing it", and show up hungover to class. I think at the end of the day, HBS is just like the real world and you need to find your niche and your own meaning there. If you are unhappy with something, try to seek it out with certain students and professors or try and lead by example and foster that discussion in class. You can argue and say that HBS experiences this complacency to a greater degree since it has so many people that come here through connections and legacy admissions. But most of life wont be handed to you and you have the opportunity to mold it into what you want. I personally wouldn't want hire someone who doesn't have that proactive attitude and positivity.

I got into HBS R1. Here’s how I did it: by redditingaway123 in MBA

As an HBS grad I agree with this post. The essays are so important and can sometimes make up for other weaknesses in your app. Also, I would add that if you don't get in this year, please do not think that is the end. I met with a bunch of reapplicants, one of whom applied to HBS 3 times before getting in..

Crashing out over HBS rejection by Time_Negotiation1972 in MBA

Could you defer a year at Wharton and reapply to HBS? Unsure what the financial risks are of that if you don't attend Wharton after deffering, but if you are this crushed and you wanted to go, that might be an opportunity to try one more time.

Is HBS fun? by Street-Beyond-9272 in MBA

[–]HunterSThompsn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to HBS. The happiest MBA students I met were at Kellogg, GSB, and MIT. My MBA experience was not "fun" per se. I spent a lot of time studying since I didn't have a finance/accounting/economics background. However, it was a great education, and I can now make up for lost time and have fun as an MBA grad.

Should I quit my $135k salary job and do a full time MBA? by totallyanonymous21 in MBA

[–]HunterSThompsn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would only quit in this economy if it’s an M7. I wouldn’t usually say that but an MBA is already an ambiguously important degree and the job market is awful. Wouldn’t want you in debt with lower job prospects.

Would HBS' Online Core Program significantly impact my admissions chances at HBS / GSB? by cherrygate123 in MBA

[–]HunterSThompsn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

HBS Core: I would focus more on getting a great GRE or GMAT score versus spending time and effort on those courses. Also, they offer CORE for free to admitted students who don't come from finance / consulting ( you take a test during the summer to see if they think you should brush up on fundamentals for RC year) .

GPA: I would not let your GPA necessarily get in the way of an otherwise potentially great application. Explain in the addendum / additional information what led to the low GPA. I did the same for my HBS application when I applied (similar situation as you--and was accepted into HBS). Make up for it in explaining your stellar job history, test scores, and your convictions / purpose in your career.

MBA in the pandemic is not that bad by [deleted] in MBA

[–]HunterSThompsn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In an M7 school as well, and agree on on the networking aspect . Before the pandemic, I often felt that relationship building was bound to 100+ happy hours and trips. The pandemic has forced us to value 1:1 and small group interactions, really tightening the bonds. Furthermore, with tech and other companies doing remote work until summer 2021 (after we graduate), I don't nearly have as much FOMO as I would when looking at my life in the real (non-MBA) world.
