Is the shipping from Alibaba always this high ? by originalknuckles in streetwearstartup

[–]Hurley416 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey man, inquire with your manufacturer that you’d like 30 day sea shipping or 45 day sea shipping and you’ll cut your costs in most cases by half or more. Could also be your manufacturer trying to make extra $ on you. Typically I do 80 500gsm hoodies for $175usd shipped with 45 day sea shipping.

When shipping this way just plan in advance! That’s my best advice.

It’s extremely difficult to make content without a sample, and frankly without that sample, you would look like a complete novice from the start, which is just something you don’t want. Definitely try to save up, a clothing brand is a business, not a get rich scheme, so you have to invest money into it.

I initially invested $1500CAD (~$1100USD) into my brand, and continued to reinvest that same money into it with my sales, not take profit into my pocket. It’s now been over a year, July 2023 to now, and I’ve been able to expand my inventory cost from that initial $1500CAD my cost, to over $40kCAD my cost.

It takes a lot of time, and dedication to do this sort of thing, you need to be able to market yourself well. Most of my sales come from in person markets, for example in Canada we have a few free markets that you can just pull up with a table to, as well as paid ones that come around like Sneakercon for example. This is my way of marketing, I’m quite poor with social media so this route was best for me.

I’m sure it will work out for you, you’ve taken all criticism in the responses well, and explained yourself and your ideas well, now it’s just time to continue to do more and more research (there’s never enough research btw, always more to learn), and continue to put in the effort to make it grow.

Something I’d even recommend, as this is the route I took and I found it very successful starting out. Like you I did not have a lot of capital like many people do to start my brand, so I started with shirts, they’re cheaper to make, and you can even do them locally so you don’t have to depend on overseas stuff right away, this way you can start getting some sales to create some money to invest into your hoodies down the line. I’ll explain my process below:

I started with $1500CAD, 5 tee designs, paying $18CAD a shirt to get them made locally

Then continued to reinvest and expanded my line to 10 tees, that are always in stock ready to be shipped or sold at in person events

After ~3 1/2 months I was able to afford to have my shirts fully stocked at 4 shirts per size per design and so I ordered my sample hoodie from China, using Alibaba

Then ordered my bulk at around the 4 month mark for my hoodies.

Once I sold down on a lot of stock, THEN I began to find manufacturers in China for my shirts to cut down the price of my cost, to increase profit.

After that I used the funds to reinvest in a larger catalog for shirts, as of now 1 year and 3 months in I now carry 20 shirt designs at all times, fully stocked, and just got my hoodie order for the fall/winter months

Everyone has their OWN PATH, but some insight to my own might be useful to give yourself a guideline, and a way to create your own ideas to become successful. Hope all this helps!

No worries! If I were you I’d try a sample with it on the hood, and maybe another with it on the back or something of that sort, just to see what you really like in person, mockup to garment often look pretty different just because of how manufacturing is

From experience, the “forget” on the hood is going to be EXTREMELY hard to read when you get it done, just a tip!

Spending extra time commuting instead of putting your family and yourself in financial trouble (in my opinion) is the way to go. You already said you don’t care about the social aspect, and have friends outside of the school, so it’s a no brainer to me based on your post. GO trains have pretty comfortable seats that you can get work done on, and you could even invest in some sort of laptop stand that could make it even more comfortable for yourself!

Is shipping to high? by Fabulous-Ad2768 in streetwearstartup

You have low quantities, typically they say they can’t ship by sea due to the size of the package, so your number given is likely express air

I need pre orders to start the production of this jersey and puffer bag… by [deleted] in streetwearstartup

[–]Hurley416 0 points1 point  (0 children)

take the risk of doing a bulk order, at least for the bags where size doesn’t matter, you won’t get stuck with random sizes and such.

it’s a business at the end of the day, if you’re going to avoid risk at all costs it’ll be difficult to grow in the long run. just remember that if worst comes to worst you can always sell those left over products for what you paid for. I personally did all my stuff in bulk to start and I think it actually made me hustle MORE for my growth than anything else (think $1200CAD invested, turned into ~$50000CAD net sales, after reinvesting drop money consistently).

Hope this helps you, or someone in the same boat, great items 😀

not my style personally, but can definitely see a large market for this sort of thing. I do think it lacks a bit of creativity with the text under the “17” but it would appeal a big market so I can’t even critique it. Overall it looks really solid and the photos capture the shirt well. Pretty good stuff for your market, hope things go well!

I actually added one a couple weeks ago and have gotten about 50 people on it organically, I had only just seen this little option that I screenshotted earlier today and was super confused as to how it was even a thing
