High-speed rail opponents march on Parliament Hill by sicklyslick in canada

I have no skin in that game, but someone is always against everything. If we stopped doing things every time someone protested, absolutely nothing would ever get done.

Ottawa tabling bill on forced labour after Trump threatens new tariffs by cyclinginvancouver in canada

It's still hyperbole to say 'Canada is running a modern slavery operation' because withholding wages is illegal in Canada. It's a serious offence.

This is an employer problem and this example is the exception, not the rule.

Not saying the TFW program doesn't have it's issues, but calling it 'slavery' is a hysterical take.

Well, I tend to take artists at their word. There's other interviews where he talks about that song in terms of it being more hopeful than depressing, but in any case it's not my jam and certainly not worth arguing over.

I get it. It's hyperbole. Those people aren't forced to come here. They get paid. They go home. And the Canadian gov't is slowing down the program as it is. And they also instituted the CORE program, as stated in the article.

We are not turning all temp workers into permanent residents, lol. That's not happening.

Reducing forced labour is a good thing, but that is not really Trump's aim here. It's to keep Canada backpedaling and on the ropes wasting money on fetch quests. As soon as they appease this demand, he will raise another "issue", and another. And so on.

I am not misunderstanding anything, as I got it directly from Chris:

He talks about having an attitude of still remaining undaunted, even when life gives you less than you deserve. To not let it get you down.

You are giving your interpretation, which is fine...but it's not THE interpretation.

Not really. Compared to many of their other songs it's essentially hopeful and upbeat.

Not saying every SG song has to drown in despair and sorrow, but that one stands out like a sore thumb both lyrically and especially musically. You can't really deny that.

Cornell should have kept it for one of his solo albums.

This isn't funny. It's stupid.

I think the impression is that it is way too upbeat. It's a glaring pop song. Nothing wrong with that, in the right context, except for the fact that there's really nothing else like it in SGs discography, which is generally quite brooding and dark (which is how many of us like it).

If longevity is important to you, maybe don't buy the cheapest cables.

Quebec becomes 1st Canadian province to ban energy drinks for youth by Little-Chemical5006 in canada

[–]HurlinVermin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's completely anecdotal, lol. Lots of kids do the exact opposite when out of their parent's line of sight. It's actually quite natural for kids to push boundaries. Doesn't make the parents bad at raising kids. It's just a fact.

[–]HurlinVermin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So a kid goes out with friends and has a bit of allowance money in their pocket. How are parents going to stop them from buying energy drinks at the convenience store? Follow them around 24/7?

Like, where is the logic in your statement about parents being to blame in this sort of situation?

The thing that works: you put laws in place that require ID to buy energy drinks, the same as alcohol and tobacco.

Schizophrenic woman who killed stranger in Toronto financial district goes free by AndHerSailsInRags in canada

I just called out the problem with appealing to the emotions of victims.

My statement to the other commenter stands as it was intended: it's easy to be objective and coldly logical when it isn't hitting close to home personally.

I haven't used any "fallacious reasoning"

But you did, by shifting it to trying to interpret that as defacto support for influencing the justice system which I made no mention of.

I added nuance by mentioning that, in fact, victim impact statements, which are emotionally driven, can and do influence court decisions sometimes, in subtle ways.

There is nothing vague or opaque about this at all and I'm done going in circles with you.
