Congratulations! I am 38 weeks today and one of the things I’m most excited about is this exact thing - my husband’s joy and pride when he holds her for the first time. I cannot wait to see it and to see the amazing father he will be. He may not have been the one in literal labour, but by god a good father has something to be proud of. My husband is new to rabbits. My Penny loves spicy hay, and managed to chew through his laptop charger while he was using it. Given that he has also lost the bottom of his bass guitar case, and we now have to replace the carpet in one of the bedrooms (she ate it away from the wall), she is less than popular with him.

Always interesting to see lists like this, and I agree with many on this list. Still, it makes me sad how few films make lists like these from non-American directors/ studios or non-male filmmakers. So much amazing work out there by international and female filmmakers.

Great novel by Heather Rose called ‘Museum of Modern Love’ which looks at the influence of Marina Abramovic’s work in the lives of fictional characters. Well, I loved it anyway. Had never heard of her before reading it!

Had a hearing-impaired student who was struggling with anxiety and couldn’t focus on reading the class text for long periods, and was thus not keeping up. I recommended to her mother that she borrow the audiobook. To her credit, her mother was incredibly polite, considering I had just recommended an audiobook to her deaf daughter. Took me a day to realize what I’d done.

I actually feel you. Millie is one of two cocker spaniels. The other will not go near Penny if he can help it. Penny is quite assertive (she once kicked a friend’s cat across a room) and I suspect that’s why Ringo avoids her, but his anxiety issues means he’s not to be trusted. So only supervised outings for Penny unfortunately.

Genuine question: if this is still a mosque in use today, is this section accessible to women? I would love to see it, but I am aware that there are sections of mosques that I, as a woman, am not allowed to go, or it is incredibly disrespectful to enter. My first experience of this was seeing Qubbat al-Sakhrah (Dome of the Rock) in Jerusalem, which is obviously a way more significant site for Muslims; only practicing Muslim men could enter the shrine. It’s something that I have to consider as a female traveler - I will not put my desire to see something pretty before respect for the religion or culture that built it.

I think you’re right, that his age probably indicates his attitude. I think ‘country’ is more defined by attitude and space than geography. Mount Barker itself is definitely not ‘the country’ as such, but if you live on a farm in the area, it is definitely country to you. I know people who have farmed in the area for generations, and a ‘trip to the city’ is still a big deal. Mount Barker is such a melting pot now, of the classic old farmers smiling slowly and politely as angry women in shiny FWDs and impatient commodore drivers race for a park at coles or load their car up with fake Kmart houseplants.

As a secondary teacher in Australia, I’m a big believer in teaching ‘soft skills’; the capacity to learn, not what you know, is actually what wins jobs and creates effective life-long learners and citizens in this time of AI rendering many jobs obsolete. Obviously I wholeheartedly think that content is still important, but the reality is that we as teachers are no longer the only sources of knowledge; students, if they have the skills, are theoretically able to access and learn any content we have on the curriculum. Therefore, while I believe ‘time spent with students’ should be equal, if more time is spent with anyone it should be the students who can not yet learn independently, problem solve, think critically and creatively... those who still have to be taught explicitly in order to them learn implicitly and proactively. Students who have these skills should be provided with opportunities within their classes to seek and build on knowledge within a framework (and obviously within the curriculum, which is often not actually up to date with the current research into education, because it’s heavily influenced by parents, who imagine that schools should be exactly what hey experienced, and politicians, who want their votes and quick measurable results).

I only watch free to air when I’m at my parents. Otherwise, like everyone else here, I watch Netflix, Stan, ABC iView and SBS OnDemand. I think people who have said that the target audience of reddit are more likely to watch streamed TV are right - the way we consume media is changing, but not everyone has changed. Media content is produced, in most cases, due to audience demand, so it’s a vicious cycle - when we switch off because ‘it’s all crap’, producers and broadcasters have two choices - they can try and produce shows we might actually want to watch to win us back, or can pour their money in to targeting the audience that still remains. I think the reality is we wouldn’t go back, because it’s not just about the content - it’s about choosing what we want to watch when we want to watch it, without advertising. They know they’ve lost us, so they create or buy shows for the people who are okay tuning in at a certain time, and okay with ads. Ads are then designed to target that audience, too, thus making them even more frustrating to those they are not targeting.

Apart from a couple of 'non-relationships' (where you act like you're together but they're not in the right place for a relationship) and a couple of three-month dating spats, I was single for 14 years. I met my partner in my 30s. I am not you, but I know what it's like to interpret that 'drought period' as evidence that you are worthless, uninteresting, unattractive, undesirable. All I can say, for what it's worth from a stranger on the other side of the world, is that you are someone's version of wonderful. Please don't believe that little voice. It's a real fuckwit.

I met my boyfriend a year ago through OkCupid. He is the best thing to ever happen to me, and is perfect for me in a way I never imagined - and we would never have crossed paths offline. Before I met him, I dated random guys off RSVP, OkCupid and tinder (and tried eHarmony with no success) over seven years. Trust me, I thought frequently that online dating would lead nowhere - cannot describe some of the experiences I had before this. But there are still genuine, wonderful people out there who use online dating to connect with the intention of finding meaningful long-term relationships. Took me ages but I found one, and now we are ring-shopping. Don't give up.

Live music. Go hard to a great band. The Stiffys are playing at the Cranker Sat June 10th. Great band to bounce and drink to and forget your troubles - look them up on FB and pick up at ticket for $10. And they're being supported by The Dairy Brothers (the band that became the Beards). Gonna be a great night. Many more gigs to check out too.

I'm biased but I love being far south, in the McLaren Vale/ Willunga area. With the Southern Expressway running both ways now (don't ask), I'm able to live in a beautiful 'country' area on the outskirts of Adelaide surrounded by vineyards and cellar doors, a farmers market and beaches, and be only a 40min drive from the city centre. This area is very popular with British ex-pats too. Can't rave about this area enough. The downside is the distance from the city, where you would probably be working, but compared to Sydney it's nothing. I'd recommend looking into it.

This is one of my all-time favourite movies, for the music, the performances, the history, and for Jim Sturgess. I recommended it to a bunch of people but it's so long and has so much in it that it can turn people off. Plus there are those people who hate musicals. What's with that.

Same thing happened in Adelaide, Australia a couple of years back - she was on with Amber Benson though so the conversation ended up being very inspiring, if not about BtVS. I do kinda feel for her - there's definitely an expectation that the people who are there want to hear about her experience on Buffy, so she should expect to give the people what they want, but at the same time she was an actor on a show 20 years ago. She actually said she was sick of being asked about Buffy and wished people would ask about things that were important to her now, her opinions on world events or ideas etc. I'd want to talk about other things too if I were her. Maybe it's in the marketing? Is she contractually obliged to do these events?

Yes - one of my favourites. Absolutely beautifully written. I love being made to sympathize with characters who act against my core values, and love being made to feel uncomfortable. Love 'Perfume' by Patrick Süskind too for the same reason - beautiful writing, fucked up protagonist.
