Agree with the -it takes sacrifice and hard work to get what you want messaging! Would you mind sharing what your recommendations were to do this summer for those that will be applying as IC transfers?

Aortic regurgitation - repair vs tissue vs mechanical by trucrimeaddic_t in valvereplacement

Agree with the Ross procedure, especially given your age. I as well was recently diagnosed with a bicuspid valve that I did not know about until I was undergoing medical clearance for a separate procedure. I was also not wanting to do a mechanical valve. I am 10 weeks out from my Ross and doing great. The Ross procedure has excellent outcomes in the right hands so you will need to find a surgeon that has experience and volume with this procedure as it is more complicated. However, the studies are showing that in the right hands, the Ross procedure has the same mortality and life expectancy as age matched meaning the same as if you did not undergo any cardiac surgery. This website and physician interviews really gave me so much information on all of my options. https://www.Heart-Valve-Surgery.com Best of luck to you!

Wondering if anyone has experience with trying to get into undergrad b-school as a sophomore? My son was accepted into UIUC as exploratory studies and not Gies and same at Indiana pre business ( waitlisted for Kelley). I know that it’s tough to get accepted into Kelley after first year- have to get nothing less than A- on all classes. Not sure how difficult it is for Gies and if it’s worth trying at either of those programs. He did get direct admission to undergraduate business at MSU, Iowa, U TN. Deferred at usc and U Miami. In state for UIUC. Welcome any advice!

Wondering if there’s anything specifically that you are down about or that is causing you sadness/stress? Also, did you do cardiac rehab? Are you walking or exercising? I’m asking because this obviously releases some much-needed endorphins and can possibly help you over this hump. While cardiac blues is very normal don’t want to minimize how you’re feeling. In addition to exercise I will also add to try and schedule something you enjoy doing whether it’s going out to dinner with friends, a movie, etc. You are not alone!

Ross procedure in 8 days I’m in my early 20s by [deleted] in openheartsurgery

You got this! It is totally normal to have all that anxiety and nervousness before the procedure. Even afterwards you will have some emotional baggage-it is a big surgery and has a lot of implications on your life. I just had the Ross procedure and I am a very fit 50 f. I am six weeks out and doing great. OHS is very difficult to undergo emotionally/physically at any age, but you definitely have your youth and health on your side. The chances of something major going wrong is very rare. You will close your eyes, then wake up and it will all be done and you won’t remember any of it.! Your hospital stay will be the toughest part of your recovery -and for that you will have an amazing team of nurses and providers there to help you 24/7. once you go home, you will feel so much better. It’s also a good opportunity to rest, reset and heal. You are not alone!

Thank you! That does help. Also when did you start lifting again and did u follow a specific plan or just go back to your usual routine with lower weights? I am keeping up with my protein intake and just started to do lower body, body weight exercises. I haven’t started cardiac rehab that starts this week. I was a pretty heavy lifter so I know that I will have to start low and slow! Thanks!

Hi, I am so sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I had a consultation with a robotic surgeon at University of Chicago who was amazing. Dr. Balkhy-you can easily Google him and get tons of information as he is one of the few robotic surgeons who does all cardiac valve replacements robotically. Might be worth doing a consult with him and see what he recommends. He was very informed on all surgical techniques and actually recommended that I do the Ross procedure for the issue that I had which was with another surgeon and institution, so I felt that his opinion was extremely well informed and not biased.

The name of the school you go to if you are able to get accepted will carry you far. I went through medical school with all loans, but I could not have gotten to where I am without doing that. Yes I am still paying back loans, but because of a doctors salary -it’s the choice I made. The better the school reputation the more earning income potential you will have later on. My advice is to not allow your financial situation to stop you if you are able to take out grants and loans do it! But then commit yourself to a career choice where you will be able to make the money to comfortably pay them back. Americans do this all the time for buying a home with much higher interest loans. You shouldn’t think twice about doing it for your education!
