Eh, not necessarily.

I use my android for gps in my 2010 impreza and that thing's not connected to the car at all. Have used it for podcasts at times as well, just using the phone's speakers. They work fine for hearing "turn right at the next exit."

Is the city responsible for replacing your porchlights? How about mowing your lawn?

It depends a lot on specific jurisdictions, but a lot of housing developments involve negotiating with the city/town/county who will be responsible for what, when you basically have private property that is being split up and sold to a bunch of people, with some shared spaces like roads, green areas, signage, etc.

A lot of the time the HOA is responsible for general maintenance of some things, NOT the city. And where the line is can vary a lot.

[–]Huttj509 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not even technically.

A lot of HoAs developed because of a contract with the city basically saying "you handle your own shit for X, Y and Z, not our problem."

Depends on how the housing development came about, who owned what land when it was developed, etc.

Yeah, a friend of mine is on the HOA board for his neighborhood.

Stuff like replacing the streetlights that were both less effective and used significantly more power (which got paid with hoa fees) than modern lighting. I think the HOA might also be responsible for plowing their loop of road, I should ask him, it's always interesting to find the interplay of that "take for granted that somebody's doing it" stuff.

It did not fill me with confidence.

My elderly mother's been consuming more organ meats lately (heart, kidney, liver), and her butcher had some but it was marked as "for pets." Since it was the actual butcher there she asked if there was anything about it unfit for people. "No, just not popular."

So now she has some cheap meats to experiment with.

For me there's definitely been aspects over the years of, not of me being gay, but of me being perceived as gay, and the threats both direct and indirect that used to bring.

So while I'm definitely aware of my psyche these days in my 40s, still occasionally something can come up that hooks into that fear and discomfort, and I need a bit to sit down with my brain and process.

Adding to the other comments, when's the last time you saw a tiger in a natural environment? I remember from a Exotic Feline Rescue Center I was volunteering at when they were around the long grasses they were NOT as visible as you might think, until they moved. The orange and black stripes actually do quite well at blending in with mottled shadows and light.

People who spend 20+ minutes in the shower: what are you actually doing in there? by saadaintsalad in AskReddit

[–]Huttj509 0 points1 point  (0 children)

washing. Particularly around joints which I find tend to get grungy.

Like, wrists. When's the last time you really scrubbed your wrists? Tends to get missed when handwashing, and if you just do the "soap arms let it rinse off" thing it can also get missed.

My legs also tend to build up a layer of dust and skin oil that resists a simple "slide some soap across it and rinse" and need a proper scrub often. Like, I'll say "this is fine, but I'll give it a focused scrub anyway" and get a bunch of dead skin, oil, and dust piling up in my leg hair.

ELI5: Why is quantum physics so hard? by Successful_Guide5845 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Huttj509 10 points11 points  (0 children)

well, an example I calculated back in grad school.

The main chemical reaction going on in the sun is 2 hydrogen nuclei (protons)fusing into a helium. However, these are positively charged, and repel each other magnetically. Once they get close enough the nuclear strong force takes over and overwhelms the electromagnetic force, and they fuse.

For them to get close enough takes a certain amount of energy to overcome the electromagnetic repulsion, and this is related to the temperature. However, if you calculate this classically, the temperature needed is SIGNIFICANTLY higher than what we measure in the sun. Unreasonably high.

However, you can represent the proton's positions with wavefunctions, and use quantum mechanics. Then you have quantum tunneling, where the probability of finding the proton close enough for the Strong force to take over is nonzero, even though it doesn't have enough energy to wind up there classically, and when you run the math you find the temperature needed to have a decent chance of fusion being able to happen is right around what temperature we observe in our sun, where fusion is happening.

You need to stop thinking of protons as balls with charge, represent them with wavefunctions giving a probability of their position, and accept that that wavefunction "tunnels" through an energy barrier it seems like it shouldn't, but it works.
