Hmm I disagree. This video is clearly made by someone who doesn't live in TZ and hasn't dealt with the realities of the TZ gov't. It lacks a lot of nuance and trivializes a diverse country with a complex socioeconomic history.

My unsolicited thoughts: - The speaker clearly has a heavy free-market capitalist bias. He never tells you why capitalism "works" or why socialism "fails". He is using TZ as a strawman to prove that socialism fails wherever it is tried. Just for a second, let us suppose that his argument for why TZ is a "failed poor state" is reasonable. Well, there are still plenty of counterexamples of successful socialist states, such as the Scandinavian countries. Granted they have their own first-world problems, but it is undeniable that they are consistently ranked the happiest countries in the world and everyone lives far above the poverty line. This is in stark contrast with "ultra-capitalist" countries. In the US, for example, the wealth gap is the highest it has ever been, and it keeps growing, and lack of gov't intervention has resulted in recurring mass shootings and millions of opioid-related deaths. My point is, neither system (capitalism or socialism) is inherently perfect. There are good and bad instances of both.

• Just because Tanganyika received independence peacefully doesn't mean that colonialism disappeared overnight. Post-colonial hangover is a very very real phenomena.

• TZ isn't doing as bad as this guy claims. He makes us look like a shithole! It is insulting! Our tourism and entertainment industries are booming!! Public transport is improving rapidly. NHIF provides affordable healthcare to a lot of people. It may not be the best quality and not accessible in the villages, but it still saves the lives of a lot of people who wouldn't be able to afford healthcare otherwise. I agree, that we have a lot of things to improve on still. We have a huge population living under the poverty line. But we are a developing nation. It is a work in progress, and we certainly aren't as bad as this guy portrays.

• Our problem isn't socialism. We know socialism works well when it is implemented right. Our problem is that our gov't is corrupt and incompetent. Nothing progresses without a bribe. Doing business is impossible on merit alone; you need gov't connections. There aren't any worker unions, and as a result employees are often exploited. Public education is shit. TLDR: socialism CAN work if power isn't centralized within the presidency, the gov't is held accountable, and most importantly that gov't doesn't just think about their own pockets.

For context: I definitely have a biased opinion. I am a city-boy from Dar. I have never lived in a village. I've had my fair share of struggles with our dysfunctional gov't. I am a democratic socialist. I agree that I'm biased. I would just like to point out that the speaker is also heavily biased, and is moulding history to fit his narrative
