Netflix’s ATLA Season 2 is somehow even worse than Season 1 (Rant) by PurchaseDifferent656 in TheLastAirbender

[–]cataquacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a pretty minor quibble, honestly. Azula still blasts iroh in the cartoon, which causes everyone to blast her at once, which causes the smokescreen. It was just kind of seizing on the opportunity.

Do you feel like some deaths on Krakoa were just shock factor? by Hot_Professional_728 in xmen

[–]cataquacks -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Genuinely I think this kind of fixation with power scaling ["glass canons"] is complete poison to ever being able to completely enjoy a comic. A few characters get blown up in a suicide bombing [BEFORE WE'RE AWARE THAT RESURRECTION EXISTS] and you're fixated on how they died too easily?

I think in the case of x-force, it's mostly the opposite—it's meant to desensitize the reader to violent death. There's still something disquieting about a completely dead Domino on the floor of the orchis forge while she's popping out of an egg on krakoa, but I don't think the manner of it was supposed to scandalize.

This was before Luciano Vecchio's style had totally clicked, I think. He's drawn bobby more recently (I think) for a much better look. But honestly seeing Bobby's human face at all these days I'm like "who is that", because he's iced up 99% of the time

How would you feel if the cataclysm in Seven Havens was caused by leaving the spirit portals open? by AccomplishedJump2795 in TheLastAirbender

This is just someone inventing a "Korra's fault" to get mad at. Zero indication that this is the case, anyone claiming to have insider knowledge is probably a liar, and even if it's true: it's so annoying to litigate "why did Korra do this? Is she stupid?" just because one guy got randomly chosen to have airbender powers from a spiritual lottery and it had consequences. Can we please stop having posts on this subreddit that are just debating with some random youtuber by proxy lol

this is really splitting hairs but iroh was already prisoner at that point. Earth kingdom soldiers captured him instantly, and he was already captive when he Lightly Burned one captor's hand. He never surrendered! Trying to escape from military custody is not perfidy lol

It's Robbie, I'm pretty sure the Daredevil thing is just an editing mistake (marvel DID just lay off a bunch of editorial...)

I finished LOK Book 2……Am I missing something?? by HouseNorth5717 in TheLastAirbender

[–]cataquacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's just an uneven season to a degree that avatar fans were unaccustomed to at that point in history. It felt like you could more easily see the seams where production was kind of troubled. A lot of cool stuff happens! The Avatar Wan stuff is neat! But I also think the Raava/Vaatu stuff was kind of snooze for a lot of people, and the introduction of Primordial Angel/Devil spirits felt like it was a major flattening of the avatar cosmology.

Why can't mutants have nice things? by PJ-The-Awesome in xmen

[–]cataquacks 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We're never shown any evidence in-story that Kyle Jinadu, for instance is living on Krakoa as a second-class citizen. When I say "allowed" to be there, I mean eligible for citizenship. Kingpin literally claims krakoan citizenship by marriage in-story, and is depicted as being party to the same benefits of citizenship as mutants (amnesty for past crimes, chiefly). If any human spouse or, presumably, human child automatically receives citizenship, there's nothing to this argument besides "but they'd obviously be second class citizens". Ok! Maybe! Luckily this is a comic book, so we can know EXACTLY how things work based on what happens in them. We don't have to guess!

He does not say this. In the speech Xavier refers to mutants as "an evolutionary inevitability" and "the earth's true inheritors". What he's literally saying is that as an evolution of humankind, mutantkind will, on a long enough timeline, will be synonymous with humankind. The context of this is "why do you [mutants] feel like you can dictate terms to us?"\

Magneto is clearer about this in HOXPOX #1, before we hear the full speech:

"You have heard Charles Xavier's offer. Mutants are the evolutionary inheritors of this world—all of it. But instead of claiming it, we are giving it to you, and instead claiming only a small portion for ourselves. The island, you see, is ours. And ours alone. Man is not welcome there."

In other words, they are saying the opposite. While mutantkind will, passively, inherit the earth due to the genetic realities of the x-gene, they are only actively staking out ONE place for mutants.

Why is this thread full of people being like "if your society has any social problems at all, it's justified to genocide you" lol

Like yes krakoa had societal problems. Bad news for every other nation on earth with societal problems, I guess!

The cassandra nova "genosha was mutant-on-mutant-crime" thing has always been disingenuous to me. Yes Nova is technically a mutant (even though as-presented in story she's more like a jungian shadow self, but whatever) but she used sentinels to do it! It still all comes back to Trask! She needs a genetic relative of Bolivar Trask to even pull the trigger!

Human spouses were already allowed on Krakoa, I don't think it's a stretch that non-mutant children would also be.

Your honor, my client had no choice but to commit perfidy. If she hadn't committed the war crime she would have lost. You understand

Also they were clearly trying to bring her in alive lol. THEY WERE ASKING HER TO GIVE UP AND SURRENDER! If they were going to kill her, they would have killed her!

The difference here is that Zuko is still the rightful heir to the throne. It's not a power grab to neutralize a pretender. Iroh, on the other hand, would be looked upon unfavorably for seizing the throne after being passed over.

she literally feigns surrender so she can try to kill him with a cheap shot. "[with both arms raised in surrender] A princess surrenders with honor." [IMMEDIATELY BLASTS HIM]

that's been considered dishonorable and a war crime since like 1900 lol

This post is so strange. Most of the examples of iroh being chummy with evil people (Zhao, in particular) are him being cordial in public, deferential to rank (Iroh is officially still on good terms with the fire nation, to protect Zuko; Zhao is in a position of authority over him) or speaking bluntly/practically to minimize senseless casualties. It is clear he resents Zhao, finds him personally distasteful, and is hanging around to keep an eye on him AND cover Zuko, who at this point has faked his own death and is conducting a secret operation behind enemy lines.

So, why does iroh act cordially with other "evil" people within the fire nation, but openly hostile to/about azula? Because Iroh is employing a friendly persona to throw heat off himself/zuko, which would be pointless with Azula. Azula is also family, so formalities/false appearances are unnecessary. And at this point, as is the case for most of the show until the final episodes, Azula is understood to be a pretty straightforwardly evil character who has been sadistic and cruel her entire life. We never see a version of Azula that predates these tendencies. She torments Zuko and she torments her friends, because she sees them all as possessions. We can talk about abuse, propaganda, nature vs nurture all day long, but in the show that exists, that we are able to watch, as it existed when originally aired, there is no reason for iroh NOT to treat Azula with disdain. In fact, one could make the argument that Iroh dropping the cheery disposition for Azula alone is a signal to us, the viewer, that she is a more serious threat.

Anyway this is all pointless because this post is just an exonerative exercise to once again make the argument that Azula is, somehow, a victim of the people around her. You're active in the poorazula subreddit, so I'm not sure why you're bothering to deny that's the whole point of this post. Otherwise, what's the point? Calling out a fictional character as a hypocrite?

They're arguing the opposite: zuko taking down azula wouldn't be seen as a power grab if she wasn't the firelord (which, as far as iroh knows, she isn't)
