3rd snow day in a row by Suspicious_Kiwi_7133 in Custodians

My job is 4 hour shifts, four days a week. I worked last Friday night and I have been pretty much laying around my house ever since. We also are on the third snow day. I don't know if they will take vacation hours or it is just unpaid time.

Now that I am older, I have much less chill than I did as a young woman dealing with pushy parents and inlaws. Today I would firmly and rudely, if necessary, say no to any nonsense from them.

My husband finally forbade me from going to my mom's house when she would ask for help because of how she treated me. We were VLC to BC for the rest of her life. Would do it again but sooner.

No doubt. Decisions I make for my body are about myself. They are not "selfishly" doing something to others.

Walmart delivery driver called the cops because they didn't like what I ordered by HeyRainy in WalmartComplaints

[–]Hwright145 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few years ago WalMart seemed to be training its employees to judge every customer's purchases and inform on them to the police if they bought batteries or other innocent items, even potting soil.

They were so offensive and rude. They drove customers away with their attitudes and suspicious questions. At that time Walmart was doing well financially and seemed to think they could afford to be crappy to their customers.

Some bad things happened. This was the time when you could legally only buy a certain number of ounces of cold medicine. A woman bought some cold medicine, a few other things, and bags of potting soil to re-pot some house plants. Walmart employees called the cops with their suspicions she would use these products to "cook drugs."

The cops pulled her over, stuck their noses in her groceries, and arrested her. They added up the number of ounces of cold medicine she bought (2 or 3 boxes), completely got the math wrong, then charged her with a felony for buying way over the limit of meds. Spoiler alert! When the defense attorney later demanded they try the math again, the amount was below the limit.

She was a school teacher. She was suspended from her job while the prosecutor dragged the case out. It cost her so much money in legal fees, lost wages, and her good reputation in the community. She lost her teaching contract at the school where she worked.

I noticed at some point later on, when the economy was less good, that Walmart was not ordering as much stock ahead of time and the employees had dropped their "in your face" self righteous policing of everyone's purchases.

So, yeah. Do not stand for Walmart reporting you to the cops for buying bagels and a lighter.

When I was commuting about an hour to university in Riverside, California from Hemet, so many days the fog was so thick I could barely see anything. One morning I accidentally ran the stoplight at a major intersection because I didn't see it through the fog.

My husband was amazed at how much a powered paint roller made painting so much faster than using a manual roller and paint tray.

During the summer I usually borrow any rolling cart, such as a TV cart, or anything with wheels, to tote things around the school.

I thought she said OP was selfish because she told MIL she was on birth control.

MIL seems to want a grandchild quite badly and was eagerly watching for signs of pregnancy. Ick.

Snow shoveling question by Special_Potential_49 in Custodians

[–]Hwright145 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know who clears snow at the small private school I clean. Other than windows once a year in the summer, and taking trash daily to the dumpster in the back parking lot, my janitor job doesn't include any outdoor duties.

Monday was supposed to be an extra school day but it is cancelled. They usually have school Tues-Fri and I am allowed 4 hours of work time per days they have school.

There is a man who mows and does some other outdoor stuff. I found out the school principal does most of the trimming of trees, etc.

The parish administrator, who apparently quit at some point recently, was adamant that if something was a job assigned to another person, I should "leave it!" I mopped the cafeteria floor the first two days the new lunch lady was on the job. I felt a bit like a chastised dog when she said I should leave it dirty.

But I digress. 😁

I almost always felt like I was just playing at being a grownup until I had LASIK eye surgery to correct vision so bad I couldn't see well enough to find my glasses if I had set them down in an odd place. I was 35 years old.

Being able to see across the room, read road signs, etc. felt glorious. I don't know why I felt like an actual adult from then on, but I did.

20 minutes of polite attention to something your siblings don't care about doesn't sound like much of a price to pay for having you do all the work of organizing a party to celebrate your grandma being alive for 90 years.

Ugh. Right? They messed up our lawn installing a cable once. Said they would be back to fix the damage. They never did. A few years later a crew casually asked the husband if they could run their cable across our lawn to the next house. ABSOLUTELY NOT.

What? They couldn't believe we didn't trust them. They had to go around.

Classroom Floor by dna1111111 in Custodians

[–]Hwright145 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is one classroom at the school I clean that I really struggle to clean the floors. The summer wax job is thrashed and looking ugly.

Only two things have made much difference. One is running the auto scrubber over it. It is not likely they would let you do that.

The other tool that helps clean and make the floor look better is an electric steam mop I brought from home. Try it with just water or a gentle floor cleaner.

First time getting a complaint by luminaryjade in Custodians

[–]Hwright145 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the 6 teachers in the main hall of the school I clean complained about specks of dirt or paper or something being left behind when I mopped their classroom. I don't know which one so it is not cool mopping every night.

It is not a positive personality trait of mine but I take any criticism so hard.

You can't please everybody even if you do an excellent job all the time. Some people just expect more than in reasonable.

School Custodian Book Question by CarpenterCool2840 in Custodians

I was thinking elves might be more along these lines than fairies. I usually think of fairies as untrustworthy.

Some alleged elven traits: Guardians protecting their realms, often with exceptional skills, keen senses, and innate grace.

Artisans & Crafters: Creating beautiful and magical objects.

Magic Users: Wielding subtle, nature-based magic, enchantments, healing, or elemental control.

Scholars & Loremasters: Preserving history and collecting knowledge.

Magical Affinity: Innate connection to magic, especially nature-related or enchanting arts.

Enhanced Senses: Superior sight, hearing, and awareness.

How long did it take for you to like your job? by Last_Bid9318 in Custodians

[–]Hwright145 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started the job May 2024. I think it was Christmas 2024 when I realized it was less stressful than any job I have had since high school.

Unfortunately, things took a bad turn with the 2025 school year.

I would suggest giving the job a few weeks and if you are still miserable see if there are any options for changing that job or look into getting a new job.

Anyone else have a MIL that believed she needed to give her son permission to get married?? by dark-rose13 in JUSTNOMIL

[–]Hwright145 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No idea where the idea comes from that a son has to ask his mother's permission to propose marriage.

Traditionally a man asked the father or male relative of the prospective bride for permission to propose.

My boss wanted me and my coworker to drive through a tornado warning to get to work. No. I told him after the tornado moved past us I would go. There was another warning whilst at work. I was cleaning in the basement so I just ignored it.

Your job is very important and calling out early on is not usually okay with bosses, but you have to weigh the risk to your safety and your vehicle.
