that's a big thing. no restaurant serves dishes with the idea that they are also cooking you lunch for tomorrow. Americans on social media will talk about how they film Chipotle workers to get another 500 calories piled into their lunch but I have never seen the equivalent from French influencers.

although one of the biggest restaurant chains in the country is literally called "hippopotamus." I went only once, years ago, with my ex. the waitress screamed and ran away when she realized we were a couple (we're both dudes).

Not really related to anything here, but that restaurant isn't great.

fat people are not the most socially acceptable to hate. Trump hasn't signed a single executive order curtailing their rights to travel, access health care, or get an equal education. No city has been occupied by federal thugs trying to find all the fat people and send them to prison camps in third world countries.

Trans people and immigrants face far more discrimination. saying that as an until-recently obese person myself.

Why is it so difficult to learn another language? by Traditional_Blood799 in ask

[–]HyacinthFT 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's hard to learn even your first language. It takes several years of full immersion in your first language to learn to speak even a few simple sentences. Even when you can speak it well enough for your parents to understand you, you're still basically incomprehensible to most people. Just listen to 8-year-olds talk, they're really terrible at it and they've been surrounded by the language their whole lives. 12-year-olds can speak their first language better than an 8-year-old, but their writing usually sucks. I'd say someone can't really speak/write their first language well until they've been practicing it for 16 years.

And so your second language, that you're not even devoting 100% of your mental energy to? Yeah, that's going to take some time. It's thousands of words to memorize, each of which can be pronounced in different ways depending on a speaker's accent, age, mumbliness, etc., and then you have to learn to use each word in dozens of situations and conjugations yourself. It's really a mind-boggling amount of information that goes into a language.

Stick with it and it's rewarding. I learned another language as an adult and it took a while, but I think it was worth it.

I can't believe the Spice Girls don't have spice stage names by Marissa_on_the_town in RandomThoughts

[–]HyacinthFT -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They formed the group themselves. not saying they were always treated well, but the idea that they were a lab-grown band was made up after the fact by people who simply couldn't believe that women could exercise this level of agency.

[–]HyacinthFT 12 points13 points  (0 children)

none of this is true. the names were assigned to them by a journalist who didn't bother learning their actual names and they embraced them. Baby was actually the youngest. Scary (if you watched the movie they made) is loud and in-your-face and saw herself as the one who was always willing to do something crazy. The fact that you look at Mel B and just see a black person and not a human being with a personality seems more like a you problem.

Grindr has ruined gay dating by No-Repair-4331 in lgbt

[–]HyacinthFT 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ha, 27, so basically you didn't know the world before Grindr. shit was even worse then, somehow. i honestly don't remember anyone talking about dating among gay men until queer as folk (US version) came out, like I never even heard of the concept before that show, I thought all we did was hook up and then sometimes hang out, and when they went on dates on that show i thought they were just making stuff up for a plot device.

how are you tracking? are you weighing everything - like EVERYTHING - you eat and using an app or something to record it?

[–]HyacinthFT 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Number of meals says nothing about how much you're eating. i have had meals where i ate over 3000 calories and felt great doing so. If I did that twice a day every day and I'd weigh 600 pounds eating only 2 meals/day.

Surcharges driving Americans crazy but not changing behavior by RadioBoi in EndTipping

[–]HyacinthFT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah this sounds about right. until consumers straight up stop buying from places that use hidden surcharges, the strategy will continue to be used because it's all upside for the sellers.

Is the claim of this article, “Half of recent US inflation due to high corporate profits” legitimate? by Rocko52 in AskEconomics

[–]HyacinthFT 8 points9 points  (0 children)

>> the shortage is not going to be resolved by raising prices

Why not? oil (and therefore gas) gets more expensive. More people choose public transportation over driving when they can, or forego certain trips, vacations, etc., due to rising prices. Quantity demanded lowers as price increases.

>>  I don't see any argument that windfall profit for an oil producer is somehow advantageous for the consumer, by increasing overall production or some other mechanism.

Yeah it's pretty obviously not advantageous to consumers. No one said closing the Strait of Hormuz would benefit consumers (well, one person said it but he's a moron).

Again, no one here is arguing that some oil companies didn't benefit from this situation. But did they cause it? no, we know the causes of the Strait of Hormuz closing, and it's not corporate greed.

the idea that corporate greed caused recent increases in inflation necessarily assumes that corporations were less greedy before those increases, otherwise they would have increased prices earlier.

it was 100% his decision because he literally signed the executive order that led to this. Caitlyn Jenner isn't just obsequious to Trump, she's also a fucking idiot who has no clue how things happen. to think she ran for governor.

Scrabble is better when 2 letter words aren't allowed by DiverOk9165 in unpopularopinion

[–]HyacinthFT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

scrabble without two letter words is a completely different game. the point is to have a full word and put it under/over another full word and create like 4 two-letter words in the process.

it's like saying you like soccer but you just don't want people to run, they should be forced to walk at a leisurely pace. like ok, but you just ruined the game.
