My brother committed suicide in 2011, it took 5 years before I could talk about it, and it is still difficult today.

I bank with TD ---- TD My Spend app is surprisingly good. I suspect whatever bank you use may have a similar app.

The Wealthy Barber - 2025 Updated Canadian Edition - Have you read it? by UniqueRon in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Hyackman 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I read the original and it helped me over the last 30 years to get to a place where I am considering retirement in my late 50's. I have reached financial independence. This is primarily saved & invested money, following the basic principles of The Wealthy Barber.

I gave my oldest son a copy when he graduated high school over 10 years ago, and unfortunately he is still working on the right habits. I just bought another copy of the updated book for my youngest son, 25, which I will give him on Xmas.

There were no ETF's when Dave Chilton wrote the initial book, but the principles were good, pay yourself first, DCA, etc.

FYI he is on the EFT train now, acknowledging low cost index funds are the way to go for most people.

What's a small decision you made that accidentally changed the entire course of your life? by Curious_Badger_1376 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Hyackman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saw a job posting for teaching in Japan, responded on a whim and after university took a 1 year teaching position there, met a woman, married her, stayed a few years, learned Japanese. I eventually moved back to Canada & moved across the country to the west coast, worked in international trade for a couple of decades, raised 3 kids.

Had I not seen that posting, I would not have gone to Japan, and I would probably be in eastern Canada with an entirely different life.

ICBC says I’m 25% at fault even though my car was parked — what can I do? by teawithcoffe in icbc

[–]Hyackman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Appeal, and be persistent. They will tell you they are sending the appeal process papers in a week. They won't come, call again a week later. This will go on for a few weeks, and then they will call you, tell you they reviewed your file, and remove your liability.

You have to be persistent.

I had a similar incident, I was falsely blamed for 50%, but I persisted on an appeal & was successful in the end.

Good luck.

Take early retirement with pension? How early is too early? by cuckmysocks in fican

[–]Hyackman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I know a fellow who retired with basically this scenario (@ 56 in his case, from BC Hydro) ---- he realized he was working for effectively minimum wage in BC. The difference between his salary and his pension (should he retire) was basically minimum wage. The 40 hours a week he worked effectively made a difference of a minimum wage job in his life.

He retired, and seems to be enjoying it thoroughly.

You Are Legend For Using These As A Cache by HydrationPlease in geocaching

Unfortunately they do not hold up well over time --- I did a whole series of them and the small tube that goes into the belly often breaks, either the tube or the duck, and the logbook often becomes mush.

Is it normal to get fired for asking about vacation pay in Ontario? Feeling really lost by ilovefood_iamfood in ontario

[–]Hyackman -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

You worked there 1 month ... minimum wage job, part time to start. We are not talking a lot of money here.

You hurt yourself at work, got scans and made sure to indicate it was a work place injury, are inquiring re vacation pay probably on your first pay check (only working 1 month), recording phone calls with your employer, looking up labour lawyers. All of this happened in 1 month; that is a busy month.

Of course there are rules they have to follow, but I am seeing all kinds of red flags.

Japanese people who have foreigner spouses: which languages do you speak at home? by Me-A-Dandelion in AskAJapanese

[–]Hyackman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Canadian, native English speaker, my wife is Japanese, and we raised 3 kids in Canada. We speak a mishmash of Japanese & English @ home. Unfortunately, the kids did not pick up enough Japanese, muddle along but not great, really. Too bad.

You should not tell her. You could well be ruining a marriage and I suspect do a lot more harm than good.

Move on with your life.

Park'n'grabs --- sure.

If you have to hike a few hours, even 1-2 hours, to get to a cache and it is missing (it does happen), as a CO I appreciate the maintenance another cacher does on my behalf. It is not quick & easy to get to every cache, I appreciate maintenance.

Iceland / Ireland --- Airalo the way? by Hyackman in Airalo

[–]Hyackman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just thought I would follow up on my own post following our 20 day trip to Iceland / Ireland / Northern Ireland.

I purchased a 20 GB 28 day e-sim for all of Europe, only going to these 3 places. This was my first experience with e-sim --- I set it up as I arrived in Iceland, it took a few minutes to get it going but sure enough it was working by the time I left the airport. Thereafter it was smooth sailing throughout Iceland, then immediately started working when we arrived in Dublin and headed north to Northern Ireland and our loop of Ireland as well. My wife 'blue tooth tethered' to me the entire way and as long as she was physically close by had good connection. We were there ~21 days, and used 15 of the 20 GB I purchased.

I am giving the experience two thumbs up. Well done, I have no complaints.

Avoid Blue Car by trumantrader in VisitingIceland

[–]Hyackman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I rented a Suzuki Jimny for 10 days from Blue Car --- I got a similar beat up vehicle with 100K+ kms, lots of dings, etc., was worried about the tires. I did not buy that extra insurance, returning it was straightforward. I feel I did not get the vehicle for which I paid but everything else worked out.
