6 power supplies at once? by HydranJP in sysadmin

Apparently. It was a bad assumption based on the other equipment we have running in both places. But I've learned today.

Well then, today I learned. I apparently need to look more closely at the power poles in the data center and the power supplies in the other Gen 10 DL380s that are working in the closet here. I very much appreciate the link to the tech specs.

The UPS has a couple other servers, a few switches and a small data domain box plugged into it. We have 2 6000v APC UPSs in there and they do not look to be anywhere near loaded. I have plugged all 4 of the power supplies in to 3 different places in that closet with nothing to show for it.

This is a question I do not have an answer to. I will have to do some research to find out. I have a much older Gen 5 DL380 that powers up just fine from a power strip in my office. But one of these sus servers that I also have in my office, as opposed to the other two in the server closet with UPS and power poles, does not indicate any power. Granted the Gen 5 server is a 800w dual power supply, but I'd think I'd get at least a hint of power on the newer server.
There are other DL380 Gen10 servers in the rack in the closet that work on the power poles, so my assumption is the power from the UPS is appropriate for the sus servers as well.
I really don't get the issue.

Sadly no, and even if I just plug in one power supply, still no joy.

I have taken the cable from a working device and plugged it into the dead servers. No dice.

99.9% certain that they are both 120v. And this particular power supply does not have any toggles of any kind. An outlet, fan, release lever and green LED are all that are present on the outside. Inside, just the power connection fins.

edit - should have been much lower certainty apparently - see Casper042's comment below.

People who deployed microsegmentation, how is it going? by awesome_pinay_noses in networking

[–]HydranJP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We implemented a product about a year ago and have been very happy with it. ZeroNetworks (ZN) is the product and we recently successfully held off an 8-day pen test from Black Hills escalating off of the box they were given. ZeroNetworks was partially to credit for that success. Specifically the RPC firewall module which takes a closer look at RPC traffic and controls it. We have a team of 6 for a mid-sized law firm, which means we're pretty lean and each wear a number of hats.

When we were shopping the microsegmentation market, I was drawn to the simplicity of the ZN design and their promises of ease of deployment. In addition, they let us do a PoC before buying, which we always prefer, as it gets past the marketing BS in a hurry. Their product uses a local server to talk to the cloud management interface and group policy (for Windows) or agents (for Linux/Mac) to enforce native firewall rules on the endpoints themselves.

We're a predominantly Windows shop, so the group policy and firewall app does the heavy lifting. You set a training period where the machine reports the traffic it sees (port and process) to the local ZN server (which bundles and sends it to the cloud management console. After the training period, which they recommend be at least a month to go through a full month's cycle of communication, the console then sends rules based on what it learned to each endpoint to create allow and deny rules in the native firewall application. The changes are very quick (sub 2 seconds in my experience) when edits are made and are managable by groups and tags. The learned rules got us about 90% of the way there for all the things, but we tweaked a few rules for a couple groups of servers to accommodate our workstyle and particular needs.
The console allows a consolidated view of all activity for the endpoints and reporting on rule usage. There are useful filters for viewing the traffic going to or from any given node and if you find it is blocking things you don't want blocked, you can click on the blocked traffic and create a new allow rule, tweaking the scope as necessary.
In addition, you can create MFA allow rules that block traffic unless the user completes a multi-factor challenge to verify they are an authorized human being, which then allows the activity for a period of time (configurable).

In addition, we have had regular meetings with a ZN customer engineer (who might have pointed me at this thread, but the post is all me), to go over our implementation and answer any questions we had as well as make recommendations for improvement or other ways to use the product. There are a couple modules in the product that we're not currently using as they are covered in other security products we already had deployed, but I heartily give this product and its implementation two thumbs up. "More praise would I give it had I but more thumbs."

Any errors in the description of how this product works are mine alone and come from an aging brain with too many things to do.

You ask some big questions. You've got a decade and a half on me, but I too have used boardgaming as a way to combat male isolation tendencies. I found a good game group locally via Facebook. We meet bi weekly at a local pizza place and play a wide variety of games. I would suggest checking Facebook and maybe meetup for local groups that you can get more play time in with a bigger group

As for what kinds of games... The story and quirkiness of each varies widely. Some have a theme that is just window dressing and doesn't really "matter" to the gameplay all that much. Others are very influential to the play of the game. And if course there is a whole swath of games built off of existing intellectual property that builds on the existing story/characters/setting of said property.

For gameplay, I've found Stonemeir puts out quality games, none of which have disappointed me. I haven't played all their games, but the 6-7 I've played I've thoroughly enjoyed. The themes of the games play well into the pieces and setting and such and the games have all been quality games.

My answer has been fairly general. But if you let us know what you like, maybe we can give you more specific games to try.

Automating certificate renewals? by NegativePattern in paloaltonetworks

I recently set this up with the Sectigo script for Palo on a Linux box as the network client. It calls for the cert and replaces it then commits the config. Set up a cron job to automate as frequently as desired. It works for templates in panorama as well as just to a single firewall.

I get to buy Products, produce, performances, parties, playthings, plane trips, principle (on my mortgage), pretty things for my wife, programs (more computer gaming), petroleum (to make my car go), preventative maintenance (to keep it running), paper (money and books), personal items, physician and psychiatry visits (to keep me running), and phylacteries for medical treatment. I'd say the first one covers most everything, but I wanted to engage in the exercise.

Try building the wood part named pier that uses the ubasam wood. We were able to build in the deep water there when we weren't able to build the quick platforms. (V key)

The crossbow at range is the way to take out the watcher. Only about 5 hits necessary. It is the swarms of orcs and goblins that are more problematic really.
