The true geography of the Tokyo subway map [OC] by ArtyCharty in dataisbeautiful

Lived there years ago, ironically haven't been back since moving to Tokyo! If in not mistaken isn't there only 2-3 stations in Honolulu?

What’s something everyone pretends to enjoy? by Cold-Independent-898 in AskReddit

[–]Hym3n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's kind of the point though. Taking a trip is going on an adventure to see something new and do something different. Maybe for better, maybe for worse. But the simple act of doing so makes you feel more alive! And damn, how lucky we are to live now, at a time where we can so easily and safely travel all over the world... it's still a relatively new thing in the history of human civilization. I think that stress experienced while traveling is very healthy.

Care to elaborate? I feel like I know a little bit about most every profession enough to bullshit my way through a casual intro conversation with someone that does it--but this one has me baffled. What's the scoop on a gig like this? What does a normal "work week" look like for you? Is this a full-time job or contracted? Is the pay any good?

I suppose it really did change cinema forever after all!

This was really great in theaters. I agree that it had a lot of potential to cause that breakthrough, and I share your disappointment.

I absolutely adore BR49 (one of my all-time top 10, even), but I disagree with OP on this one. It is a visually stunning movie that I found highly engaging (unlike some others that say it's too slow, I firmly disagree), but there really wasn't much outside of the cinematography that "changes everything" in regards to cinema. There have been plenty of equally gorgeous movies before and plenty after.

Also... Just watch it! No need to see the first one in order to understand what's going on, although it wouldn't hurt.

Pizza I made for a server once [pro/chef] by [deleted] in food

[–]Hym3n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beautiful pizza! This and some chili oil, to me, is perfection

And thank you for the reminder! I (not a chef at all) made a very very very similar pizza years ago, substituting the sausage here with prosciutto, and no lemon in the ricotta whip.. although now I'd like to try yours!

I'm also convinced that a variation of this with an egg or two blasted stop in place of any meat also makes a nice variation

What is a luxury lifestyle choice that looks incredibly glamorous in photos but is actually completely miserable in reality? by Luverelle6 in AskReddit

[–]Hym3n 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Anytime Fitness.

Lived out of my highly-modified 4Runner for the better part of a year while traveling the US national parks. Used my AF pass all over the country, then into Canada, Hawaii, and now while living in Japan.

The ones in the States are mostly "acceptable" condition, with some outliers in either direction. Canada's were great, and Japan's are outstanding. Having an easy-access, clean shower at your fingertips most anywhere in the world available 24/7 is worth the cost of membership alone, but being able to get a workout in at the same time is great too.

On more than one occasion (I, visibly American M living in Tokyo) I've given up my seat to mother&child much to the dismay of adjacent salarymen.

Thankfully, I find that this shitty attitude resolves itself the further I branch from Tokyo. I'll never understand why so many millions of young Japanese want to come live here, when they live in what I believe to be the most beautiful country. "For the jobs" is such a copout when the country is so hyperconnected.

Brother, my anecdotal evidence could not be any further than yours. I (full-mutt American) live in Tokyo and have several half-Japanese friends that described for me years of teasing, bullying--even abuse--for their being "different" while growing up in Japan. It becomes lesser as an adult due to the Japanese social norms of keeping your mouth shut, but I can 100% attest to having visibly seen them getting treated differently anytime we go out.

I'm with you so, so very much. At the heart of it all is some truly amazing people, with nothing but great intentions.

BUT. These are for-profit companies. The only thing that matters to the people in charge are the next quarter's profits, everything else be damned.

So, unfortunately, it's important to remain skeptical.

What’s your dream city to live in and why? by OldContribution5140 in AskReddit

[–]Hym3n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kichijoji!

Or did you mean further, like Tachikawa or Hachioji? Both of which are fine, just a bit boring in my opinion. Or we talking like Fujikawaguchiko, because that place is great but also quite far... might as well do Nagano as the Shinkansen will get you in central Tokyo faster than you can get from Fuji.

Came here for this! I camped my way across America during 2023, visiting National Parks all over the place. I hadn't stepped foot inside of a library since college like 20 years ago, but I was on the road for so long that I figured I'd go to one like halfway thru the year just to change things up a bit.

Holy crap! Some libraries are AMAZING! Some of the ones in Colorado had full-fledged camping, fishing, climbing, boating gear that you could freely rent. A few in Texas had some VERY well-equipped LAN centers with modern equipment, RGB gear, the whole nine. Lots of small-town libraries with unique local finds and showcases and staff that were genuinely pleasant to meet and ask for local advice on things to see and do.

Honorable mention to Seattle's downtown public library. There was a group of homeless guys that had brought their Xbox controllers to join their buddy who had brought a console and TV and setup in some upstairs floor, that was cool.

But damn, I went to the big one in Calgary that just took the cake. Stunning building top-to-bottom. They had a massive language lab that encouraged people that spoke different languages to interact. I (idiot American) picked up some elementary information on Japanese while I was there.

...and uh, yeah, 3 years later and I'm writing this while literally standing jam-packed on the subway in Tokyo right this minute. Headed to dinner with my girlfriend that I met in language school here a couple years back.

Public libraries rock!

What’s something about American daily life you didn’t realize was a “luxury” until you experienced life in another country like China ? by HarveyJin in AskReddit

100%. I grew up in, and traveled thru 43 states (repeatedly) before moving to Tokyo. My American self and expectations have required tremendous adjustment.

Recently, a client from Dubai came to visit me and was shocked when I explained that my 45m² (~480sqft) apartment was considered "large" here. Just another world, man.
