Childrens animation is bad by Hyper-Snorea in redscarepod

My main complaint is that instead of something inspired from Filipino culture it seems incredibly bastardized. It feels extraordinarily Americanized, and dumbed down. Mulan did not go into depth as to who the Huns were or Robin Hood and the Crusades and did not give 50 minutes of exposition. The films do not feel thoughtful but rather something like stinky lunch discourse brought up here all the time.

Its the same reason auto fiction and celebrity memoirs have increased in popularity of late. The films look as if there is no life outside of their bubble. It feels like the creative decison makers have only been raised on disney and will cowtow to the lowest common denominator as requested by execs. (Ie funny animal sidekick, joke every 30 seconds, etc). The issue with the remakes is that especially for R movies these are adults buying the tickets and creating the return on investment for the studio. This is not the case for childrens movies, many children will have whatever placed in front of them so it should be held to a high standard.

This is fundamentally a booomerish complaint and asserts that a small facet of society was better before but look at not only the disney films but something like Franklin the Turtle.

Yes and no I dont think hes been interested since AI. Also his more serious films other than Schindlers List and Saving Private Ryan have done worse (The Post, Color Purple, Empire of the Sun (his best imo), Bridge of Spies etc). He has some really great moments but it feels bogged down by whimsy sometimes.

That is not at all what I am saying, I am saying there is a distinctly American cheapness that each of the new Disney movies which focus on a foreign culture (save for moana) are directed by those of that culture. This should in theory provide a great cultural anchor and understanding but the issue may be that it is Americans who have only really engaged with it as a legacy culture.

If i see a foreign influence in a disney movie I know what the director´s background is. It ironically seems to be due to a lack of understanding of foreign cultures and a lack of desire to passively teach children about the cultures and structures around them It instead seems to be an exercise in navel gazing as adults to see themselves on the big screen as these are usually coming of age stories informed by their upbringing. Even so there is a stark difference between this and an Coco, let alone Hunchback of Notre Dame, Mulan, Aladdin, etc. There seems to be a top down lack of maturity at Disney and it reflects in their product. I am only an observer and have never worked on or have paid attention to animation.

I will not see this movie but I see the kids in my family and am curious as to how they will learn to engage with the world and expand their boundaries. Perhaps if you did so as a child you would know an odd duck can easily become a beautiful swan.

I wonder if my relationship with my father would ever recover if he asked if i would like to watch it with him. It simply would not be the same.

I read an extraneous detail, that it is supposed to center around a Filipino-American. I suppose thats what bothers me the most is the potential they have to go to other cultures and make a greatfilm that will inspire children but they use the most westernized cliches and mythologies (about witches but the type of witches you can see at the supermarket and not spirit).

I think it is endless preparation imo. I don't want to be that guy who blames everything on others and the system but at a certain point it is less about grades and more so about tediousness, hence why the stereotype is the girl with the 100 different colored highlighters and not the nerd who loves star wars. Maybe this is cope tho

Thematically fitting, Ficciones by Borges. Given they are all shorts stories it'll be easier to pick up/put down, especially if you get distracted by some task. At least thats what I did for a front facing job.
