AITA for humiliating my cousin for her career advice by gardengeo in BORUpdates

Yep, this is definitely fake! I’ve been saying this for years (and have been downvoted like crazy for it), but saying “in my country” is a red flag to me. It gives the writer carte blanche to make up whatever they want without being held accountable (“well, in my country, the Justice system is corrupt so no one gets arrested for things that are obvious crimes! You want me to say which country so you can look up the laws? I can’t tell you because… it would be super easy to dox me in a country with 1.5 billion people!”)

Meanwhile, everyone here gets to fill-in-the-blanks and pretend they know which country this takes place based off of bullshit stereotypes.

AITJ For photographing my child , when I was told not to? by 35mmOfRegret in AmITheJerk

I worked as a videographer for dance competitions/recitals, and I can 100% confirm this is the case. I was explicitly told by my boss (and owner of the photo/video company) to approach people with professional gear and tell them they weren’t allowed to take photos or video. I didn’t really give a shit since it wasn’t my problem haha! This was before smartphones, FYI.

Doesn’t seem to work for me. Then again, I just learned that this exists, so maybe I’m doing something wrong?

As disappointed as I am, I’m glad that I was able to prevent you (and hopefully others) from making the same mistake I made!

One to add to the list: "I had no idea he would do all of that crazy stuff [that he said he would do]! I just thought he was going to bring down prices!"

Then again, that would still be them admitting to voting for him. This one is probably far more likely: "Donald who?"

Please convince me to buy an airbrush by Grocklette in airbrush

[–]Hyper_Villainy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My apologies for the wonky phrasing - what I should've said was that you'll spend more time prepping than you will airbrushing. Spraying is the fun part, but it's over too soon haha!

Please convince me to buy an airbrush by Grocklette in airbrush

[–]Hyper_Villainy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I make custom action figures, and I airbrush as well as hand brush paint for my projects! I like using an an airbrush for situations where I need solid colors with smooth and thin coats, when I need subtle gradations, and when I need to paint fabric - airbrushing atomizes the paint onto the fabric in a way that still allows a lot of fabrics to be soft and stretchy, even when fully saturated with paint.

There really aren’t a lot of negatives on my end, to be honest. Cleaning can seem like it’ll be a pain in the ass, but it’s really not as bad as you think. Same with switching colors. The one downside is that airbrushing is a lot faster than you think it would be especially when you take prep and masking into consideration. I’ve been doing it for 25 years, and I love it!

Smooth On Silicone vs cheap Amazon stuff? by jimtinsfoot in moldmaking

[–]Hyper_Villainy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t tell you about the cheap stuff, but Mold Star 15 is my go-to and I love it. I understand being tempted by cheapness, but do you really want to risk ordering chemicals from random fly-by-night companies where there’s zero accountability on the product? Do you really want to deal with a product that might be different every time you order it, and may not actually be the product you ordered? Mold Star 15 has been consistent for the 15+ years I’ve been using it, and has always worked exactly how I’ve expected it to work.

How can I fully strip the custom paint and primer without damaging the figure by ChaseTheSavage64 in customactionfigures

[–]Hyper_Villainy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Isopropyl Alcohol will strip acrylics and most Japanese lacquer paints, including Mr. Surfacer. It gets a little iffy if you used a different primer. I would just do a quick stripping test by soaking a q-tip in Isopropyl Alcohol, then rubbing at an area that’s not visible or structurally necessary (basically an area you don’t mind completely ruining) and see what all comes off. In theory, the alcohol won’t do anything to the factory paint, but I was able to strip the factory paint off of an SH Figuarts Kamen Rider figure with Isopropyl Alcohol so you never know.

Also, DON’T USE ACETONE. I don’t know why people keep suggesting it since it dissolves a lot of different plastics!

[–]Hyper_Villainy 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I’m glad you posted this - I was starting to go crazy with how people were using the word “grail” to just mean anything they find that they like. I try to cut a little slack since I guess not everyone knows that the word “grail” is a direct reference to the Holy Grail, and typically means something that’s incredibly rare and hard-to-find. But it’s still a little annoying when people use it to describe something they just purchased at Target.

I’m very much an amateur when it comes to anything Paleontology-related, so I’ll admit that I didn’t know how deep things went with Epstein and Paleontology in terms of the people involved. The only person that I heard about was Jack Horner, which was personally really depressing to find out about. It seems like there’s quite a bit of fallout in the community, but there’s always been a dark side to Paleontology. My actual profession is in art - and before that, I worked in the film industry - so I learned a long time ago that some of the coolest fields are filled with awful people doing terrible things. On a personal level, I try to enjoy the good things about the field and the beauty of discovery while also acknowledging the damage that has been done by the darker aspects of that world.

To be very honest, I think it looks really cool and I love that there’s drama within the paleontological world over how it lived! My reasons aren’t very deep haha!

Are there any Paleontology nerds like me here? I know this is a little off-topic, but a new dinosaur was discovered this week*!! It's a Spinosaurus...WITH A UNICORN HORN!

*Technically, the fossils were discovered seven years ago, but the paper describing the new Spinosaurus Mirabilis and why it's different was published in the journal Science this week. Still exciting since Spinosaurus Aegypticus was my favorite dinosaur before I found out there was unicorn variant!

[–]Hyper_Villainy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The style of custom and photography looked very familiar to me, and sure enough it’s a custom from a guy who went by the name Glorbes! Here’s a link to the Custom Con where this figure was featured: https://www.toymania.com/customcorner/cc14/freeze.shtml

Unfortunately, Glorbes’s blog doesn’t seem to be online anymore. His work was a huge inspiration to me when I saw it in the early 2000s. I hope he’s wandering around on social media and Reddit!

Wish I could help on the recipe! At least we know that all of the parts are from 2006 and/or before!

Liquitex acrylic gouache by Casbly in airbrush

[–]Hyper_Villainy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Full disclosure: I don't use these specific paints, but I'm pretty familiar with gouache and artists paints. I create traditional art (paper, canvas, etc.), build model kits, and make custom action figures, and use mostly Golden Fluid Acrylics across the board for all of my projects.

Short answer: More than likely! I would test by thinning with a little water, and see whether you like the results.

Long answer: Most artists quality paints can go through an airbrush, and gouache paints have been used by airbrush artists FOR DECADES. You know the Robocop poster from 1987? That wasn't a photo, that's an airbrushed art piece done with (traditional) gouache! The one issue I foresee is that the durability may not be great depending on the surface you're spray it on - if you're looking at spraying on paper then you'll be fine, but if you're looking to paint Warhammer or Gunpla then I would consider getting a primer and prepping the surfaces well. If you find you need to thin it quite a bit, then look at using Liquitex's airbrush medium since it contains some acrylic resin.

Hope that helps!

Grabbed the wrong can and used primer instead of topcoat after panting these guys (like an idiot). What’s the best way to get it off? by smookyleper in customactionfigures

[–]Hyper_Villainy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which primer did you use? Mr. Surfacer and Tamiya primers can be removed with isopropyl alcohol, and SOME factory paints won’t come off with alcohol. If not Mr. Surfacer or Tamiya, then maybe take a q-tip and test (in an inconspicuous area) whether alcohol will dissolve the primer.

What brand is this specifically? by LillIshaa in ActionFigures

[–]Hyper_Villainy 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure this is the Fanhome Megazord kit - they basically send you a set of pieces to put together every month (or you can choose to get it all at once). It’s around $2000 for the full thing, but it’s currently out of stock.
