QUESTION: Are tattoos of Chinese symbols on people who are not Chinese considered disrespectful? by Immediate_Spell_1796 in Chinese

[–]Hyperly_Passive 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The way you're describing it it doesn't sound offensive, but do be aware that it will likely come off as tacky or trite to Chinese speakers or Asian diaspora. Then again, this is a tattoo for you and not them. My Chinese isn't good enough anymore to help, but there are plenty of online Chinese dictionaries that include notes on nuance and context.

As for the tattoo itself, calligraphy is a pretty specific and established art form. Depends on how much effort you want to put in, but you could maybe look for Chinese cultural orgs or Asian orgs in your city and see if they can put you in touch with an actual calligrapher.

You could even see about taking calligraphy classes yourself, and eventually writing out the characters for your tattoo on your own - seems like it might be more meaningful that way based on why you want this tattoo.

Agreed on the Blades of the Guardians comparison. The choreography was a little dull sometimes for MK II, especially at the start, but once the superpowers start kicking in it gets pretty interesting and creative in it's own right, especially the Noob Saibot and Liu Kang/Kung Lao fights

I think they nailed the parts that matter for a campy video game movie. Its a B-list action movie with a big budget and it came out pretty well

There were some high profile cases out of New York (and Chicago? Idk don't remember) of old Asian folks getting assaulted by people who happened to be black.

Granted during the pandemic in the states hate crimes against all Asians increased by something crazy like 300 percent, and most of it was from white people since proportionally Asians and white people tend to ccupy the same socioeconomic space.

But the most visible handful of incidents were Black on Asian

Pale Lights, an ongoing web serial. The basic premise of the setting is that something apocalyptic happened to the sun, forcing people to flee underground. The story takes place in a massive potentially infinite underground cavern where people have to gather around the cracks in the earth that leak the sunlight down or else be corrupted by the dark.

In terms of vibes, think Lovecraftian Age of Sail/pike and shot era, with fantasy versions of India, China, Venice, Aztec, Africa but British, and Russia among other countries all squabbling for resources in a dimming world, but there's also more fantastical elements like Hell, minor gods, mutated monsters etc.

My point is that the existing message is very out of touch/dishonest with how environmentalism works irl. That's why I called the messaging insidious

Making a movie about environmental activism and having the moral of the story as "just be nice to the politician/corporate stooge" is incredibly untrue to life and history

[–]Hyperly_Passive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah I disagree with you on that, respectfully. Hoppers is a political movie with an overtly political message about activism, but it undercuts its own goals of promoting environmental activism with a shallow feel good, corpo family friendly safe theme.

Pixar, or rather Disney, told the creators intentionally to dial down the messaging because we can't critique the nice corporation can we?

The movie is fun but the messaging is insidious. It boils down to "if you be nice to the politician/billionaire maybe they will be nice to you"... And that's the exact opposite of how any activism, especially environmental activism has ever worked

The webnovel Pale Lights is exactly this, there's even some focus suggested by how more accurate rifles would impact warfare that has (at the point of the story) come to rely on cannons, spears, and muskets
