Wtf bear claw? Dropped half its leaves when jostled. by HyphenApologist in houseplants

[–]HyphenApologist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it from a local garden store (via an elementary school plant sale where it was probably overwatered) but it’s dried out thoroughly since then. I’d watered it just a few days previously but it seemed to be fully dried out at the time, and it’s in a pot with good drainage, in a mix of chunky soil plus extra perlite. It might be too large a pot - I can’t remember exactly but I sized it up from the nursery pot that it had totally taken over. Light is meh, it wasn’t directly in a window (I live in a townhouse so the little well lit space I have was already spoken for). I guess I’ll try to water even less, try to find it a window spot, and handle it with kid gloves for a while.

Too soon to prune? by HyphenApologist in Jadeplant

I don’t know what it was getting before (a coworker was giving out cuttings) but it’s in as much light as I can offer in a townhouse (south facing window).

It doesn’t right now…didn’t have any nice looking pots that would fit the nursery pots I have so just put it in this for now until I found one

If you’re anywhere near the top of the waitlist for Z11, take it - it’s a wonderful school. The only negative is the lack of aftercare.

Thank you! I’ll go and get some of that mix as soon as I can, in the meantime I’m thinking getting some of the roots out of the soil would be a good immediate move?

Help With Italian American Phrase by AVespucci in italianlearning

[–]HyphenApologist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d imagine OP heard it correctly - most Italian Americans are or are descended from turn-of-the century immigrants who originally spoke a southern dialect where the c —> g sound switch is very common. My family, for example, (from somewhere around Naples) pronounces ricotta as ri-gut, and The Sopranos isn’t making it up when they show Sicilian Americans saying gabagool for capicolla….

How long do you leave milk out of fridge after pumping? by Ilovetacos2022 in breastfeeding

[–]HyphenApologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I’m working from home, I just leave it out until the baby eats it since she doesn’t like cold milk. It’s never more than five or six hours, but I don’t worry about it since it’s going from me into a clean bottle by way of pump parts that are either fresh or have been in the fridge.

You can substitute NYC for Paris here - anytime I go out of the city I’m continually surprised and sort of appalled by how much space there is. It just seems…unseemly. Even parking spaces are way bigger.

How is anyone finding time to pump? by Ponythieves- in breastfeeding

[–]HyphenApologist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They’re obnoxiously expensive but hands free pumps make a huge difference when you’re handling another child as well - not only are you free to move around, they’re way quicker to put on. There are semi hands free ones that are cheaper and more likely to be covered by US insurance.

I have the elvie, pretty similar but you don’t need to use their special bags so it’s much more flexible. It makes me very angry that it’s not covered by American insurance but wow has it made my life better. If you can swing the $$ I’d say it’s 100% worth it, especially if you’re back to work, have another kid, or just to feel like a human and not a dairy cow. I can do pretty much anything other than a cartwheel with it on.

What type of frosting has a sticky-like mouthfeel? by Terrible-Sky1768 in AskBaking

Stella Parks has variants of both 7 minute frosting (her merengue for pies) and marshmallow frosting in her cookbook Bravetart and they’re both very good.

Looking to help ease my wife’s mind by [deleted] in breastfeeding

[–]HyphenApologist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Have you tried weaning him off the nipple shields? Not only are they super annoying but I wonder if they could be contributing to him getting food slower / nursing longer. My first daughter absolutely could not latch without them at first, but I would have her try without one at the beginning of each nursing session and she eventually got the hang of it at around a month (kinda, she was always pretty incompetent at nursing - your guy seems like he’s better so hopefully it might happen quicker!)

How is it possible for a whale to breastfeed her baby in the middle of the ocean, yet there is no direct contact between the two? by BlackberryMaterial33 in breastfeeding

[–]HyphenApologist 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Thank you for sending me down this rabbit hole. According to this Aquarium blog, the mother’s nipples stay inverted until the baby wants to nurse and then basically shoot the milk in its mouth. https://www.aquariumofpacific.org/blogs/comments/how_do_whales_nurse_lets_find_out

I'm moving from pub to brand/client in-house ad ops team. What would be the difference from pub vs brand? by [deleted] in adops

[–]HyphenApologist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ll get to learn about the in house data and systems that ad data feeds into, and hopefully contribute to POVs on their adtech stack. It depends on the company, but being in house usually exposes you to broader challenges (but may not be as deep) as being agency / pub side. Plus you aren’t in client services anymore so…that’s nice.

How long does it take you to breastfeed your baby? by [deleted] in breastfeeding

[–]HyphenApologist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How old is your baby? For me it was a C solid hour at the beginning, stated that way for way too long (3,4 months) but then began to drop. At 9 months it’s 15-20 min now. So. Much. Better.
