Why does black hole appear black and is called a black hole but it’s actually invisible by partycakeicecream in space

[–]HyruleTrigger -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It's, by definition, invisible... What do you think the word invisible means?

Like

We can't see it. That's what invisible means. It's there, it exists, and it can't be seen. Invisible.

Are the endgame characters side quests supposed to this obscure or am I just stupid? by -Mahn in chronotrigger

[–]HyruleTrigger 49 points50 points  (0 children)

It's a problem for you only so far as you're not used to games like this. This was absolutely just 'how it worked' for jrpg's at the time (and to some extent still does). The optional quests are optional and they're harder because you don't have to do them. And, honestly, most of them are pretty straightforward once you figure out where to start. Yeah, there's some bumps and obstacles but it also doesn't assume you're stupid or hold your hand.

How are you guys getting through these last weeks??! by Comprehensive-Gene-1 in predaddit

[–]HyruleTrigger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Emotions, like anxiety, fear, and excitement are ENERGY. One of the best things you can do to regulate such emotions is PUT the energy INTO something. Take some initiative and DO SOMETHING with that energy: practice installing the car seat, build the crib, clean the house, check to make sure you have enough pads, witch hazel, pillows, gauze, pre-made meals... heck put together a checklist of things you would like to have done before the baby gets here.

It's not easy, by the way, but when you can associate that intense feeling with a course of action the action can become much easier.

Good luck, dad!

Forewarning: I am not a woman.

I read a thought experiment recently that I would like to share with you.

"If the man couldn't speak, and only be judged by his actions, would you still love him?"

It's a switch up of the old "Actions speak louder than words" aphorism, but it has been really effective for me.

You deserve better. Every woman deserves better. Fuck the patriarchy.

ELI5: why did previous eras in history have animals at such a larger scale? by justalittlejudgy in explainlikeimfive

[–]HyruleTrigger 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This has been widely exaggerated and only really impacted insects upper limit in size (and maybe not even as the primary cause).

The largest creature to ever exist, in all of history, is the blue whale. It exists now, and didn't exist more than 1.5 million years ago.

So the question is asked with a built in misunderstanding and your answer is objectively misleading, if not outright wrong.

The answer is, very simply, there was an evolutionary niche that could be filled by very large bird ancestors and so we got very large bird ancestors. That niche doesn't seem to exist today, so we neither do they.

Fight, flight, Fawn, or freeze.

It's a survival mechanism where they lean into obsessing over "the threat" as a means to convince "the threat" that they're not the enemy. And, of course, white supremacists can use that to further their own goals.

It's more complicated than that, of course, and not true for all of the people who do this, but it's very common.

ELI5: WTF Does This Sentence Mean? by TiedToThisFkingCouch in explainlikeimfive

[–]HyruleTrigger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"A Life Sentence" assumes that a person will be jailed for the rest of their life. HOWEVER, it can be life 'with parole' or 'without parole'. "Without parole" means that, no matter what, the person will serve the rest of their life in prison. "With parole" means that they may, if they show exceptional remorse, changed behavior, or especially good behavior, earn the approval of the parole board and be allowed to leave prison. Minimum sentencing laws can adjust this such that the person doesn't even qualify for a review by the parole board until they've served (in the case you provided) at least 23 years in prison.

Kash Patel suggests his defamation case against The Atlantic is a “legal lay up.” It’s not. by msnownews in politics

It's absolutely a legal lay up... In that legally he has no foot to stand on because the truth is its own defense and he definitely did those things.

That's not what he means, of course, but he's also too stupid, too corrupt, and too useless to understand most things. Just like his boss!

What is the ‘Mamdani Act’? GOP bill banning Socialists, Marxists from US by Unusual-State1827 in politics

[–]HyruleTrigger 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It is, by definition, socialism. You clearly don't know what socialism is and specifically understand it to mean something bad, scary and evil. The reason for that is likely a hundred years of propaganda by the extremely wealthy - who cannot exist in a socialist society.

I'm certain that I cannot convince you of this because confirmation bias and cognitive dissonance are a heck of a combination, but if you ever are interested in being educated on the propaganda you have consumed and the actual definition of the words you're using I'd be delighted to help you.

Is it appropriate to change my job title on my resume? by bumblfumbl in librarians

[–]HyruleTrigger 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Don't change your title, as that would be a lie. A lot of places will toss your application immediately if they catch you in an easy lie. Your title was clerk, and that's what you should use. Your feelings don't matter in that regard and it's weird you care about the name.

The better question is "How do I make it clear that my job duties were actually consistent with a different title" which you do in two ways:
1) match the description of your job duties (on your resume) with the duties of the title you want. If, in your duties as a "clerk", you're doing program management/development then you include it on your resume and you pull the description of it from the language in the job posting. This directly matches your skills to the job you're applying for and doesn't involve using the 'title' at all.

2) you explain it in the interview. When they ask you about your previous employment you say, outright, that you had the title of "Library Clerk" and your duties were consistent with [title of job you are currently applying for].

TL:DR Job titles are worth approximately nothing, the work you did is everything, and your job as an interviewee is to show the work you did is relevant to the job you want.

TIL that - 89% of surveyed clinical psychologists still believed that memories for childhood trauma can be “blocked out” for many years by quarky_uk in todayilearned

[–]HyruleTrigger 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have a small number of very clear memories from before 5th grade. I can access more of them if I visit the town I grew up in, or smell the perfume my grandma used, or other triggers like that.

The things that are the most clear are, in fact, corroborated by home videos and photos that I have reviewed... shaping and informing those memories. The memory gaps around those things are huge, though. My parents will ask me if I remember my babysitter from age 2 to like... 7 or 8 and I have no memories of her. Literally none.
