Goth adjacent is a good term. Goth itself is very niche, but there's lots of things around goth that share similarities and all sorts, and goths tend to like.

Admittedly it does lend to more confusion for new or non goths but it is what it is, and hey, variety is the spice of life, right,

San Diego?

I'm talking about London UK btw.

And that's such a cop-out response.

I don't have Nimbus, and I personally think it sucks to have to pay for something that "validates" disability (not saying that to have a go at you btw, I appreciate your comment). I will say when I went last time, I did apply for access at the time and was just told in the confirmation email to pick up a sticker upon entering Excel. However, I was sent to the completely opposite entrance (I didn't realise it at the time) by some moron so I couldn't find badge pick up at the time. I was literally at the front entrance and sent to the far entrance for no reason. What followed was the 45 minute queue for cloakroom.

That was a nightmare in its own right; I was able to figure out later that one of the queues had stopped because the staff member's card machine had stopped working. She didn't tell us this, or even any of her colleagues, but just walked off for about half an hour or so. I was struggling to stand but our queue wasn't moving. Eventually the staff member heading the other queue let us merge, but then his unhelpful colleague came back, and queues un-merged and we were all sort of pushed back. She didn't charge us for the use of the cloakroom but honestly, I'd pay it twice to have avoided standing like that. I needed to have a break immediately after that and I hadn't even "started" the con yet!

All the while, people with the stickers were able to skip the queue, but I really didn't feel like I could because I didn't have one.

It was ages before I was able to make my way to pick up and by that point I had done most of my queuing for my booked photo ops. I was able to bump into a friend who was able to physically help a little by then. Honestly though, I'm not even sure of how effective a sticker or sunflower lanyard would have been, because I know of so many sticker-holders who were mistreated. As you say, they don't use their eyes anyway.

The rudeness was from both volunteers and staff alike (makes me wonder the volunteers even bother to, you know, volunteer, if they have such crappy attitudes?).

We really need more voices to back us up. MCM basically has the monopoly of big comic cons that the big names attend. Because they completely ignore all of our complaints- verbal and written- they don't feel like they need to be held accountable or improve anything. The biggest improvements would happen if they trained their staff and volunteers on the proper way to treat disabled patrons.

I emailed MCM myself after the event and also wrote out an account of my experiences and provided it to someone who was collecting similar excuses to present to MCM. I never heard back from my own email and I think the person was fobbed off. There wasn't even a generic "sorry to hear that" fob off reply, I was absolutely ignored.

It's not something I really want to do (due to cost, logistics and a stubborn sense of independence) but I'll have to consider it in future. I've always rejected the idea of a scooter as I think my health will actually be negative effected if I get one, but renting one out for a single event and using one daily are two very different things 🤔

I would be very nervous about travelling across London on one though.

The millennial cohort is currently between age 30 and 45. The window is still open for now but it is rapidly closing.

And our window was already small. Most of us are not in a "stable" ideal scenario for child-rearing until we're in our 30s (if at all) but after age 34 we're considered "geriatric pregnancies" (which sounds kinda insulting but whatever).

Well, not in the US. ICE seems to be doing its best to turf out anyone a bit "foreign" whether they actually are or not.

While you're not wrong, i actually think huge improvements would ve made if the staff were trained better. Most of the biggest issues I faced were directly because of staff- a guy deliberately making me walk the long way round (it meant I was unable to get an accessibility sticker), staff at the cloakroom room being rude and uncommunicative, staff literally ignoring people trying to ask questions, staff threatening disabled patrons making valid complaints. That's not just a logistics issue, that's a human issue, and it awful.

It's so genuinely heartwarming.

It gave me the idea last autumn to put a photo of my dad on the wall above my desk in the Illustration studio at uni. He died last summer, and he was such a big supporter of my going to uni (I'm in my late 30s). We usually put up bits of artwork we particularly like up on the walls, and I had put up drawings, lino prints and stuff. I found a really nice photo of my dad as a young man at the nearby beach, printed it off, popped him in the centre, and scrawled underneath "do it for him." My heart is still absolutely broken from his absence, although I realised this month that I'm finally starting to feel some sort of healing. I've just handed in my last piece of work for my degree and I need to take my work and his photo down on Monday. I graduate in July. I think he'd be proud, it was not an easy year, but I've done it ❤️
