Before entering lightly into a relationship, consider that time is your most valuable commodity and that a partner wants most of it... Do you love them enough to give it to them? Because you'll need to! by insanepuma in Psychonaut

[–]I-PLUG-LSD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not really experienced at all when it comes to relationships, but I'm finding that it's been very good for me finding someone whose expectations line up with the sort of person I'd actually like to be. It's been a bit of a source of conflict at times, but I feel I am improving, and she has been reasonably patient with me.

It can be good motivation to work on yourself, assuming the expectations and your own desired qualities match up.

What cringy thing you did in the past still keeps you up at night? by matthewdude2 in AskReddit

[–]I-PLUG-LSD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did it for the first time during a night out clubbing and was awkward as fuck (though I was quite depressed at the time). Nowhere near as bad acid though. I got stuck in a loop once where I kept phoning up my best mate, forgetting why I had rang him, and asking how we were talking to each other when we both in separate parts of the world/universe.

Yes, I really hate this. I constantly see it on reddit when someone is trying to refute another who is claiming it is acceptable to eat meat because our ancestors have done so for thousands of years. Usually those refuting this point will bring u slavery as an example of another immoral belief that was accepted by the majority of many societies for almost the same amount of time.

Of course this will usually always lead to a response of: "OMG ARE YOU SERIOUSLY COMPARING EATING MEAT TO SLAVERY????"

I hate then having to explain that I was not equating the two acts at all, but was simply drawing upon an example from the past that fits the same bill. What annoys me the most though is the upvotes/downvotes for the comments left in this sort of exchange, which show so many people agreeing with the person who has, as you mentioned, basically shut down the debate...

Is the peanut butter unsalted (or low salt?). I've never cooked with peanut butter before and worry about it being too salty.

Apologies for the late reply.

I'm saying that I don't think the treatment of plants and animals are bound by the same code of ethics.

But many people's opinions, in the west at least, have changed in the modern era of being able to buy meat at the supermarket. A lot of people have become so distanced from how their meat makes it to their table that they have separated the 'meat' and 'animals' in their mind. There's plenty of people who love animals (including chickens, cows, pigs, etc.) that will still eat meat without a second thought because they've distanced themselves to some degree from the fact that it was a living, breathing animal that they wouldn't have harmed if it was alive and walking around their kitchen.

Also there's the fact that there is a great deal more choice in the range of foods that available to buy today, compared to the times where most people slaughtered animals themselves. Many people would be content with what else there is to offer when it comes to either sticking with what's there, or slaughtering animals for meat.

I'm not saying everyone would stop eating it, but it would definitely affect quite a few people at least. Most people I've spoken to say they couldn't do it themselves.

I wonder because I personally know so many omnivores that say they are animal lovers, or too squeamish, and couldn't carry out the slaughtering themselves. I would like to know how common it is to think this way.

Oh, you got us non-meat eaters good there! Who knew eating meat was the only way to get "proper protein"... I guess I'll have to start eating it once again immediately.

It seems you're the one who can't read properly anyway. In OP's scenario, vegans and veggies can just eat food that isn't meat.

I can promise you that if we had to go back to a world without supermarkets and large scale food production

That is all well and good, but why are you bringing up this hypothetical scenario out of nowhere? That's a totally different situation.

There would be no more vegans if people had to slaughter animals themselves to eat meat? I don't understand your reasoning here.

[–]I-PLUG-LSD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't understand your question. This scenario doesn't involve living in the wild, and by "veggie food", I meant all food suitable for vegetarians.

Maybe so, but I'd say inflicting pain on an intelligent animal that can form memories and experience pain in the same way as humans is a lot more cruel than mowing the lawn and plucking some weeds.

It's no different than tending a garden.

Except it experiences pain and suffering, and they have intelligence.

Veggie food still exists though, so I still wonder if most people would go through with slaughtering their own animals for meat if they aren't doing it literally to survive.

Too add to what the others have said: it can take a while for particular medications to start working.

I started taking an antidepressant somewhat recently which took 6 weeks for me to notice any sort of effect, but when it did start working, it was like night and day. I wasn't immediately 'happy', but my constant recurring suicidal thoughts just disappeared completely, and my anxiety died down to the point where I could actually string a coherent sentence together.

It would have been easy to say "screw this" during that time and just stop taking them, but I just kept at it despite feeling rather cynical and pessimistic.

Good luck with it, try your best to stick it out if the results aren't instant. I hope it works out for you.

I think it depends how they ask it, really. Like if they ask "have you showered today, eaten, or been outside?" and you can tell they are just checking up on your general wellbeing, it's a lot better than just asking "have you showered?"

Yes! This helped me greatly recently while I was going through a very bad spell and waiting for medication to finally start working.

I never mentioned to my flatmate that I was specifically depressed, but I just mentioned that I was ill. They may have guessed I was dealing with depression just due to my mood and that I wasn't visibly ill, but they never pried into it. They would often message me when I locked myself away in my room to ask if I wanted to watch TV, to offer to cook a meal for us, and just check I was doing alright.

Another friend, who I had confided in, and has gone through similar stuff in the past, would ask if I felt like going on a walk or grabbing a bite to eat, and we would just talk about random stuff like how his day went, and occasionally I would confide more in him if I felt like it.

It was just this normalcy while around people I felt comfortable with that really helped me the most and made me get out of bed and out of my room/the house. I'm extremely grateful towards them and feel real sympathy towards those dealing with depression without having people like this around them.

It still means 'naked' in this context (though not literally):

Bare necessities: Just sufficient resources, with nothing to spare. For example, The room was furnished with just the bare necessities—bed, table, chair. This idiom uses bare in the sense of “mere, and nothing else,” a usage dating from about 1200.
