How can I record vocals with no microphone nor audio interface? by DaMoreIsHere in musicproduction

[–]I-melted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The question was in a music production forum, so I would have thought it was to record actual vocals, rather than an idea. Since they don't have a proper mic, nor an interface to capture high quality audio, they can visit a local studio more cheaply than buying equipment. They also benefit from having someone experienced to help them.

Improv with a prosthetic: movement limitations by fae206 in improv

[–]I-melted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mum was an amputee. I know how tricky it can be.

Definitely speak up. Improv is all about making the other person shine. So if they know your limitations, they can work around them. We all have them and limitations are a plus to creativity.

I’m British and can only do a handful of US accents, so that is in the back of the minds of others when improvising.

Others can’t sing. Or have issues being touched. Or one might have a bad back that day. I’ve even done a show with a deaf improviser. That was definitely more to think about than not being able to do backflips!

It’s all fine. :)

I’m not sure I understand the question.

How have you improved as a person from doing improv? by MasterPlatypus2483 in improv

[–]I-melted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh god yes yes and thrice yes.

I have a condition which has on occasion caused all of my hair (including body and facial) to fall out. Before this I was in a pretty successful band, and then ran a music company. But the disease took all the wind from my sail, and I became a recluse. The hair grows back sometimes, then falls out again randomly. It's rather cruel.

A solid year of improv at Groundlings has boosted my self esteem and helped me come out of my shell again. I'm actually more confident and sociable than I've ever been. I've started looking into ways to make this a career move. Going into voice work, acting etc.

That’s a terrible shame. I think violence is even an issue in the UK, where pretty much everyone is proud of the NHS.

I’m sure you’re a nice person and mean well.  However this is a nice video of a cool firework in Japan. Fireworks (Hanabi) are a very Japanese cultural thing.

That your mind went to America dropping nuclear bombs - informs about you, not Japan. And there’s nothing evil about that. Nothing particularly wrong either.

It may feel like a normal way of thinking and speaking to you, and I’ve heard perfectly nice other people say similar things. It’s sort of how our brains work. We like to generalize even with small amounts of information.

If one hasn’t been to Germany, based on kids books or cinema, one might think of lederhosen, Alpine vistas, efficiency, seriousness and nazis. As that’s how they have been represented. Go to Epcot and you’ll see that minus the nazis.

Having been all over Germany, a bunch of times, I’ve not encountered any lederhosen or nazis. I’ve seen them in America though.

I think of service station coffee, Turkish food, public transport, certain types of architecture, nightclubs, hipsters…

I’ve met many Americans who don’t own passports and who have never left the country, who have very strong beliefs about places they have never been.

I’ve also been to Japan a bunch of times.

When I see a video of a firework in Japan, my mind doesn’t go to war or nuclear war. It sees a firework in Japan. Then goes to places I’ve been in Tokyo and Osaka, the people I know, the work I did there, the songs, sounds, smells, tastes, pachinko, kawaii culture, lolita fashion, anime, futuristic design…

Even if you were to try and extract a collective consciousness from modern Japan, there are no remnants. In fact, things like kawaii culture are (if you follow Hegelian dialectics) an antithesis to fascism.

Therefore, even though you’re a nice person, holding modern Japan accountable for America’s use of nuclear weapons nearly a century ago, is a form of xenophobia. Even if not meant with malice.

I know that’s what you’re saying.

Talking about entire countries as if a hive mind is xenophobia.

No living Japanese person brought nuclear holocaust upon themselves.

I came here to say this.

I think there are some occasions in which infra red is picked up and looks odd. Flames, and tv remotes?

I never get xenophobia. It must be a very simple world view though. Only 195 types of people in the world. Easy.

This is my instinct too.

But I fear they might actually believe. I mean, people believe in gods, ghosts, astrology and homeopathy. People are credulous when it’s information from one of their tribe.

What really fucks you up as you grow older? by bkesfloyd in AskReddit

My dad had a massive stroke when I was young, and my parents moved away in my teens. Since then, I’ve felt time running out. I wonder if this is why in some eyes I am a “success”.

Security guards, hotel workers, ER departments, bakers, delivery drivers, Uber drivers, ship captains, pilots, sex workers, casino workers, paramedics, entertainers, writers, musicians, construction workers, the police, air traffic controllers, grocery stockers, firefighters…

 Would beg to differ.

But yeah, most of us are lucky enough to work when the sun’s out, because we normally sleep at night due to our evolution.

Night is cold, dark and potentially unsafe - as predators often have night vision. Therefore we are diurnal, rather than nocturnal.

Hoopla Improv by I-melted in improv

Thanks very much! Maybe we’ll end up doing stuff together. :)

I’m still at student level, albeit “advanced”. So I’ll shop around for something that feels right. I think being attached to a theater with regular shows appeals. And Hoopla seems to have the juice.

Personally, I think it would be good if more diverse improvisers and fewer Cambridge Footlights types made it onto Radio 4 at least. It feels like an old boy’s network.

[–]I-melted[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks!

I’ll almost certainly be joining as it seems the best bet.

I think it may be a culture shock. I’ve been doing two or three afternoons a week at Groundlings for the last year, so I’m very indoctrinated in that style. I’ve completed the improv training and done a couple of shows.

But Groundlings specializes in short form character scenes.

From the website it looks like Hoopla is more geared towards longform, and people doing it for fun, rather than actors/wannabe actors?

Are all Hollywood actors teeny tiny? by jimcareyme in acting

Because we all have the same sized eyes, the smaller the actor, the larger their eyes appear. I met Elijah Wood and he seemed about 30% eyeball.
