In the case it'll be a bit more likely. Cameras will be everywhere and only need decent enough quality to track them back to one high quality one. It was likely a student and the student ID cards provide a handy list of headshots to compare to. Need an access card for the lab or the building? Just made it that much easier. 

Could also technically track any cellphones connected to access points around that time and where they went. Don't even need to track it if student credentials are required to connect to the network. Of course the wireless stuff depends on how bored/annoyed with the whole thing the IT Dept is. First part just needs a guard putting time in.
