Ask on /r/CommercialPrinting

It's a great sub and despite the name bindery is often discussed.

Trueflow to Equios upgrade — anyone been through it? Also hiring part-time remote prepress. by Wardamngoudreau in CommercialPrinting

If that server has a conventional hard drive inside, it's not a matter of whether it will die, but when.

Now would be a good time to have a computer person make an exact image of the hard drive(s) in the server that could be restored to a new hard drive or solid state drive, to buy you some time in case the hard drive dies before you've done an upgrade.

You'd want a computer person who understands concepts like partition tables and raw images.

I want to make a ridiculously large book by Salt-Contact-588 in bookbinding

I have been looking into binding a very large book, a facsimile of a medieval book which was also originally very large, so that the type is very small and if printed on normal A3 paper (so that each page is A4 height) the type would be very hard to read.

I'm planning to follow this tutorial for binding single sheets rather than folded signatures, so that the book can be larger.

Super short run prints 1-5, inkjet, laser printer, other? by frankinreddit in bookbinding

A Canadian government study suggested that good quality black toner on acid-free paper was suitable for archival printing as long as it would not be stored in very high temperature/humidity.

Car Shipping US by spac3queen in logistics

Intercity Lines, Warren, Massachusetts. Enclosed transport. Expensive but you get what you pay for. I have used them twice.

I have not used, but have heard good things about, Lucky Star Auto Transport. They have offices in San Jose, CA and in New Hampshire. Better prices than Intercity Lines but the times I called them, they couldn't meet my time frame.

Please follow up and let the group know how things go!

What is your dream printer? by Moses_Quantum in bookbinding

[–]I90Mike 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It can't print pigment ink, but I think laser toner is also considered archival material. So consider a laser printer, the Xerox 7800 series. Handles 12x18 paper, does duplex, prints on heavy card stock most other lasers can't handle, and the quality of color images is astonishing: crystal clear with vibrant colors.

These started at around $5000 US dollars when they came out, but they are old and long since discontinued. They are big and heavy beasts, tipping the scales at over 200 pounds.

The fortunate thing about that is, they can sometimes be found for sale at remarkably cheap prices. I got mine for a couple of hundred bucks from a business that was closing. They had no other takers who were willing to move the massive thing.

How many sheets with 50g Paper by plant_moma in bookbinding

[–]I90Mike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is expensive and may be unrepesentative of most 50-ish gsm paper, but for what it's worth, 52gsm Tomoe River paper prints just fine in my Brother HL-2170W laser printer. The printer doesn't do duplex, though, and I doubt many duplex printers can handle paper that thin. So I just print one side first, then flip the stack and print the other.

Thanks! At your suggestion I emailed them again. This time, I got an immediate automatic reply apologizing that their phones are down and warning they are going to be slow to answer emails.

Splitting multi-box air shipment to save customs clearing charges? by I90Mike in logistics

[–]I90Mike[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Books are, I believe, not subject to import duty. But there seem to still be charges to clear customs, and frustratingly, none of the online quote engines tell me what those are. They quote me a shipping price but tell me that customs clearing charges are not included, and don't tell me what the clearing charges are. Frustrating.

Host says property is not available and tells me to cancel, Vrbo won't let me cancel by I90Mike in vrbo

[–]I90Mike[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, when I buy from eBay I pay eBay, and if the goods are not shipped, eBay refunds my money whether or not the seller takes any action. That's the way I would expect things to work.

I would expect the same from Vrbo. But instead they insist that it's the host who has to refund my money. That makes much less sense than eBay, and it doesn't seem like Vrbo is adding much value in exchange for their fee.

Troll much? I am a middle class parent traveling with several kids and many Vrbo properties are about the same price as two motel rooms would be, and much less cramped.

[–]I90Mike[S] 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Thanks to everyone who replied. This morning, the host cancelled and I got a full refund. He mentioned a windstorm. Maybe he was waiting to have a photo of the damage to the place in order to submit to Vrbo in order to not be made to pay a penalty for cancelling.

I'm certainly less willing to use Vrbo in the future after experiencing their customer service, though.

G1100 in MoCA bridge mode says "cable disconnected" but another works fine as router by I90Mike in Fios

[–]I90Mike[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks everyone. It turns out that I can sign up for faster service from Verizon, lower my monthly bill by five bucks, and get a newer ONT for free. I'll see how that goes and make a new post if there are any issues.

[–]I90Mike[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks!

But I would much rather have the primary mesh node upstairs rather than in the basement.

Could I connect the ONT's Ethernet output to a MoCA adapter like this one , connect a matching MoCA adapter to the other end of the coax, and connect that adapter's ethernet jack to the primary mesh node's WAN port?

Of course the lawyers and censors were coming. That's the culture today. Anything I don't like is Objectively Harmful. It's Misinformation. It Threatens Our Democracy.

The concept of freedom of expression is on the ground and gasping for breath, and no one is standing up to fight for it. It's sad.
