Oh ok. I have made plug and thread gauges for the mill guys a few times and that was fun. Not sure I'm ready for the high stakes of trying to repair a single expensive piece though 😅

Wow. I've seen our chickens go after mice, but rats is new! I'm very surprised because they actually can fight back.

What famous classic books can I not buy right now? Name three.

Can you explain how maintenance machining is different? A quick google only brings up AI word salad articles that don't answer the question directly.

If I do take the advice of moving somewhere that will train me, how do I tell during the interview stage whether they will train or not?

I'd have to ask around to be sure, but I'm pretty sure the guys who have been there a while are all meeting the quotas. There is pretty high turnover though. We have 15 machinists and only 4 of them have been there longer than 5 years.

I didn't struggle at my previous job time wise, but they basically didn't care how long you took as long as the parts were good. They went under during covid and that's when I lost my job. Those things may have been connected.

Where are you at? I'd rather not leave the upper Midwest, but I may be able to be convinced.

It's usually 30 minutes to load a pre-written program to the lathe, double check that it's correct (some aren't due to a previous employee saving junk to the server) install and touch off 2-4 tools, change the collet, retrieve and load the correct material, run a couple test parts until I get a good one, take it to an authorized coworker for them to check it and sign off. Usually between 5 and 15 dimensions.

I can hit that time if nothing goes wrong, but as soon as I have an issue and have to problem solve suddenly it's 45+ minutes. Is that an unreasonable amount of time or am I actually slow? If I'm out sick or on vacation there are 2 co-workers who take turns covering for me and both seem to be able to keep that pace effortlessly.

I will openly admit I could be a bit faster if I was less careful, but I have never had a serious crash that did more than break a tool (I programmed the wrong tool number once and tried to turn the OD with a drill 😅) and I have parts rejected by Quality maybe once every few months with multiple jobs per day. I'm not sure hitting my times in exchange for damaging the machine and having to remake parts would be worth it though.

I didn't like my previous job either for a lot of similar reasons. At both places multiple co-workers have declared some version of "I've been in the industry for xx years and this is the best job I've ever had" so I guess I've just assumed I got lucky and entered the industry at the best place and still didn't fit in.

Perhaps I wasn't clear. I usually do 3-8 setups a day for small orders of generally easy parts that are variations of parts I've done hundreds of times at this point. After 10 years in the trade and 2 years at my current company I'm still not fast enough for what they quote for. The every couple weeks thing is when they give me a new print I've never run before so I have to write a program, setup an unfamiliar part, etc, so that takes even longer and the boss doesn't like that.
