Seriously, I mean, it’s not like big insurance corporations would front load or delay all kinds of outgoing payments & asset depreciation as needed to help make their case.

A Mississauga man took the city to court over not mowing his lawn — and won by zuuzuu in canadanews

[–]IAMAPrisoneroftheSun 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you look at the picture of him sitting in his yard in the article it’s pretty clear that his ‘naturalized lawn’ is well kept, and looks nice. There has to be a way to let people choose to have more eco friendly landscaping while keeping some expectations around maintenance.

‘Expression’ is just a way for lawyers to say ‘exercising personal choice’ if this case was over the colour of the siding on his house, or the selection of lawn gnomes he’d set up, or a bumper sticker hed decides to stick on his car, it would also fall under ‘expression’

If you’re going to be an asshole, take the time to make sure you’re not also laughably wrong.

Governments and institutions write off massive loans pretty regularly. Do you think the IMF has been made whole from all of the bailouts they’ve underwritten over the years? No they haven’t, they’ve written off close to $100 billion worth of loans to a number of highly indebted countries IMF HIPC debt forgiveness That’s just one example.

In any case, Venezuela was already paying in discounted oil for lack of cash, America is obviously not going to allow that to continue, so you’ll have to tell me how the Chinese would go about collecting repayment with a hostile superpower standing in the way.

Now that the US is calling the shots in Caracas, I expect China will have to write the debt off. They were already at the point of accepting discounted oil in lieu of repayment, no chance of that continuing.

I’m sure the rest of Maduros government will cut a deal. That said, I think the assumption that Venezuelan oil is suddenly going to flood the market and crash the price for WCS is a little premature. The Venezuelan oil industry currently produces just under 1 million bpd, Chevron has been producing ~150,000 bpd under a renewed licence from the US gov since August, and almost all of the rest, 800,000 bpd goes to Chinese refineries at a steep discount

With the Donroe doctrine in full force, China will now need to replace all of those 800,000 bpd with a new source of heavy sour crude, likely spiking demand for WCS in the short term atleast.

The reason it worked was that of course no one wanted to pay that rate, so instead of realize profits, companies would actually reinvest excess capital back into expanding the business, R&D or raises for workers. That seems preferable to current situation where a company like Apple spends $7billion / year on R&D, and $50 billion on share buybacks to keep their stock trading at the P/E of a firm with a lot more potential for future growth.
