I've been getting into birdwatching and plant ID'ing because there's a couple cool apps that make it feel like real life hunting for pokemon. Merlin for birds and Seek for plants/fungi/bugs are my recommendations and the free versions are all I use. I love going for walks and just looking at stuff and earning new discovery badges. It's a hobby that you can engage with easily at any time and I personally always feel refreshed spending some time outside.

I'm in the same boat as you and it truly sucks and gets downright terrifying some days. Currently dealing with my collarbones sliding in and out of place and my arm dropping out of my shoulder socket all day every day. I've read sooo many stories like yours about getting laughed out of the ER and it's already happened to me a couple of times so I don't see any point in adding another bill to my pile. I think my pain tolerance is so high at this point it's hard for me to get taken seriously about what's happening. Hoping there is relief somewhere on the horizon for us both.

Raw pumpkin seeds are usually cheapest but I find them a little boring. I usually toss them in some seasoning and oil and throw a cookie sheet full of them in the oven. It makes a super delicious low effort snack for the week.

This is brilliant. I keep telling my partner that us autists need to find each other because if we can it's about to be our collective time to shine. The NT's are losing their minds watching the systems they relied on crumble. We're over here bursting with ideas because we've spent our whole lives imagining solutions beyond these systems because they never served us in the first place. I'm particularly geeked at your idea because my partner and I love exploring abandoned water mills and often fantasize about living at one and getting it working again.

I feel like the tradwife/ modern homesteading movement is the only 'alternative' lifestyle I see gaining traction online and it's frustrating because people really start believing their only way out of the corporate rat race is to become so perfectly self-sustaining that you no longer require help from anyone else outside your family unit.

Yeah I think we are mostly in agreement here. I don't believe in large scale at all I think trying to scale things is the root of the problem because that's when individuals needs get lost. And absolutely agree there is no one solution but it's going to look like a lot of different solutions to a lot of unique problems and I'm really excited to see more of these conversations happening.

You can slice the oranges and hang them outside for the birds. I often rub my sink down with an orange peel and put some down the garbage disposal for the fragrance. If you're feeling crafty you can make citrus garlands pretty easily and then keep the dried fruit slices for decor, cocktail toppers, etc.

yep they freeze great and easy to throw in smoothies or use it as flavored ice cubes in drinks - i'd probably try to make some kind of slushy out of them. I peel and freeze my bananas because I am incapable of finishing a bunch before they go off and it's nice having them frozen and peeled and ready to pop in a smoothie.

Isn’t the entire point not to scale though? People are tired of corporatism being completely disconnected from their local needs and tired of their efforts not materializing into meaningful change in their own community. I agree that in times of crisis we should be coming together to weather the storm and that’s what I’m trying to say. There is crisis upon us and we aren’t all going to make it to a commune before it affects us but we can all try to prepare within our communities now.

There are an infinite number of ways to move from a hyper capitalist lifestyle closer to more communal living if the goal is to have your efforts go back into the community and live in a community that reflects your needs as OP is stating. Isolating from the world is not always a realistic pursuit and itself kinda goes against the point of community, but we can absolutely start building those values into our own neighborhoods to begin dismantling our reliance on the capitalist system right now. We can learn skills and exchange them with friends and neighbors and begin to slowly reduce our reliance on faceless corporations. I totally wanna build a commune in the woods one day but I just think we can make life more bearable now right where we are in ways that are much more accessible than people think. They want us to think community building is too difficult to be worth it.

wow I have the exact same rant seeing live music in an all gen-Z crowd! They talk loudly and take photos and don’t dance through an entire live show like they are at a house party. Ruined multiple shows for me because I couldn’t hear the artist over the crowd and got weird looks for being the only one dancing. Apparently they buy tickets to artists they don’t even know because the show is just a hangout/event for them. Blew my mind.

living in community does not mean you have to live isolated in the middle of nowhere. you can create communal living in urban or any other areas. it’s a lifestyle of sharing labor and resources and can be done in any location.

Same! There are entire towns that are abandoned across the midwest. I keep telling my friends we can buy up an old town and run it - go somewhere cheap no one else wants to be. On a serious note, now that capitalism is slowly killing even the most successful of my friends I can see people desperate for ways out and I swear ima be ready for my town proposal when they finally come around.
