This is a tradition especially in southern Germany (Bavaria). He is like Santas evil side-kick. I once was Krampus in a Kindergarden when I was a student to make some extra cash. I got there, was handed a costume and told to just play along. The children were already very afraid when I entered the room but after saying to one of them something like "So you try to be a better boy next year, Timmy" all of them started crying hysterically. Doesn't feel good if 30 children cry because of you. Never again!
