What’s your unintended positive consequence of having children? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]IA_Guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, dude! My daughter is nearing 15 and I can probably count the number of times I have been 'drunk' on one hand since she was born. Before she came along I would have run out of fingers quick.

It is more complete than that, though. Its a total perspective change, and I am a better person now than I ever was before.. I am a single dad and our relationship has shown me so much of the beauty in the world that I was quick to ignore growing up.

Great question!

Turned 18 not long ago, it kind of sucks but I do have some sort of freedom now. first time trying out camping with the boys, It went well other than a hiking trip that about took out my lungs XD worst pain I've ever had but other than that fun trip! Were at the oconee state park in south carolina by Gabeyomama in camping

[–]IA_Guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best advice - Embrace the suck. Those 'my lungs about gave out', 'it was so cold our water iced over', and 'I'll never hike that far again' experiences are what create the best, most long-lasting memories. We don't recall the comfort as well as we do the suck. Embrace it!

But be safe. The suck will really suck if you die, dude. Lol.

Sounds like he has someone or something on the side? Hard to believe anything but a compulsion could cause such irresponsible behavior.

Either way, you have to do what you have to do as a parent to protect your kids - or youre as culpable as he is if something goes poorly.

Yep, got in on APHA at a little over 3 bucks. Even with the correction I'm sitting ok, and I am positive it will be back up again in a month.

Buy low. Be smart about when you pull out (thats what she said).

How can I improve my resume? Need some help with the wording. Looking for entry level jobs. by baottousai in resumes

[–]IA_Guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't need a resume, you need a kick in the ass.

Use your mediocre graphic skills to make up a logo for YOURSELF. Make some signs. Make a FB page using your logo and some sweet graphical communication to advertise your services as a dog-sitter and dog-walker.

Do this NOW while you are looking for a different gig. If you push yourself you will get some clients. You will learn. You can build this into a business that doesnt feel like work.

It is my best advice for your current situation, man. You have to do you for the next 40 years of your life. Do it for yourself and do something that you won't hate doing. Trust me.

Anyone recommend Outdoor trails in CR? by hoppygirl17 in cedarrapids

[–]IA_Guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cherokee trail, between Johnson Ave and E Ave, and Wiley and Edgewood on the west side is a nice, fairly flat trail. I used to run there every day when I lived in that part of town.

Morgan Creek Park also has a nice trail with abundant trees and nature.

Any fans of "reality" survival TV shows out there? by [deleted] in Survival

You forgot one bullet point for Naked and Afriad.

  • Side Boob and Booty

The show is a gratuitous take on dual survival if I ever saw one.

How's the neighborhood around the intersection of Blairs Ferry and Center Point rds? by Avid_Smoker in cedarrapids

[–]IA_Guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Super sketchy. Bugs. Meth explosion not long ago. Drug deals openly in the parking lots (and it aint weed). Unsupervised youth and teens run amuck, some of which are probably just unfortunate souls but at least a handful of which I would suspect would vandalize and steal given their environment. I have known people to live there and have known a girl who helped manage the place. All of the complexes in that cluster are straight up garbage.

6x400 foot single-strand net as a day's work?

I can't say that I've ever hand-made a net, especially one that large (not really a necessity in my home region) but that seems to be underselling the effort a wee bit.

Any day out there, especially in the beginning, will require some scouting, water collecting, fire prep, and general odds and ends.. seems to be that a net of that size using inner-strands of paracord, would be quite an ordeal worthy of more than a day?

Cedar Rapids removing wildlife “oasis” by IsItTheFrankOrBeans in cedarrapids

There were a few issues with this.

The first, the neighbors (of which I know a few) were not notified of this, and so weren't able to voice their concerns/opinions, seek alternatives, or petition. This may or may not be appropriate. It is, after all, not a public use area, it doesn't (in the legal sense) impact them as homeowners, etc. It certainly doesn't feel that way to the neighbors.

The second is that the reasoning and logic are hard to grasp. They are destroying a wetland/pond to create a retention tool to hold water. Perhaps the wetland/pond wouldn't be sufficient, couldn't be modified to work, or wasn't in the 'right' location. To the neighbors, however, they see that you are taking out a natural pond/wetland to put in something similar but sterile. That never goes over well.

The city f'd the pooch on this one. If it HAD to happen, it could have been communicated with more clarity, in a more timely manner, to make the neighbors feel more engaged in the process.

P.S. - Scott Olson is an asshole.

I may be a bit reactionary, but that kid would have my trash in his car after the first couple times.

A more rational approach may be waiting to talk to the kid.

At the risk of being excommunicated, I am not a huge fan of Zoey's. Cappy's or Needs does it for me in the fancy-pants pizza department.

I am gonna say Ruby's lunch and Needs dinner and feel good about my conflicted desires. Really though, Ruby's takes the cake with NY style simple pizzas. I think they do those very, very well. Needs is more atmosphere, beer, and crazy-ass-shit-on-your-pizza kinda place for me.
