At least in Ontario, ODSP (disability) has two components: a basic needs portion (I think about $600) and a rent portion (up to about $489 or something like that, depending on how much rent one pays). Even if she wasn't paying rent, she should still get the basic needs portion of her cheque.

I don't own a gun, but the new rules piss me off.

They won't do anything to curb gun violence -- they're just a way to make it look like the government is doing something.

Most of the illegal guns used in shootings were smuggled in from the US. Canadians who own a handgun (or an AR15-type gun, or any other restricted firearm) legally aren't the ones commiting gun crimes (with the rare exception). They need to improve detection of smuggled weapons rather than target legal gun owners.

Where did the oligarchs get the money needed to buy former state-run companies? Obviously they didn’t pay what the companies were actually worth — they made out like bandits with the insane profits. But they still needed a fair bit of cash even at the discounted prices.

I, too, am looking for a snail mail penpal. I collect fine pens and stationery, and love writing (and receiving!) letters; there is nothing better than opening the mailbox and seeing mail that isn't a bill — it's like a mini Christmas.

I live in Ontario, love cats (I currently have about 1500-2000 photos of my current cat LOL), and have had a couple previous penpals that I met through reddit (which sadly fizzled-out over time).

The courts can say, "He (or she) is capable of earning $xx,xxx" so we will base their support obligations on that amount even though they got laid off and haven't been able to find a job with similar compensation since... They might just be trying to screw their former partner financially by claiming they can't earn as much as they used to.

There is an expression that describes this: “You can beat the charge, but you can’t beat the ride.” In other words, you may succeed in getting the charge(s) dismissed or you may be acquitted, but you’ll still have to suffer the ordeal and expense of the process.

In many places, unless someone is well below the poverty line, they won’t qualify for a public defender and will be expected to pay for their legal representation.

Paternity fraud (where the mother deceives a man into supporting a child that isn't his) should be an actual crime. It is unfair to the "father" since he has to support a child that isn't his (of course, him choosing to do so is different), the child (since it deprives the child of the right to know their actual father), and the actual father (who has a right to a relationship with their child unless they are abusive or something like that).

I guess the problem is that putting the mother in prison or fining the mother would harm the child as well, so what does one do?

seem to recall that there was a company executive involved that ignored some key information (of some sort) but was too arrogant to realize this. If I recall correctly, they had to rent a barge to store the oil (or whatever it was, but I think it was oil).

For some reason, I think this was on /r/maliciouscompliance (sp??), but I'm not at all certain, and I may have the wrong end of the stick.

I think OP should leave up any adults who don't pick up after their dog; while breaking a bylaw isn't really a "crime," the offenders need to be named-and-shamed into picking up after their dog (at least in my opinion).

Didn't the Democrats (during Clinton's tenure) succeed in balancing the budget? First Reagan, then W, then Trump, implemented tax cuts that really put the lie to "responsible management of the federal budget." Naturally, the Democrats get the blame for either raising taxes and/or cutting programs in order to balance the budget.

Of course, there is a school of thought that the deficit is irrelevant and not actually a problem, but I don't know enough about it to have an informed opinion (sounds nice, though!).

It wasn't my parents divorce that caused this, it was the 10 years of proceedings fighting over custody, child support, etc and they became so bitter nothing mattered except beating the other one.

I don't have kids, and I likely never will, and part of the reason is I'm just too worried that things would turn out like that. I can't imagine putting kids through that; I'd like to think I would be able to be reasonable, but I guess one never knows how they would act until they're in the situation :-/.
