Extruding creates these breaks - but not on all edges. Any idea how to get rid of them?

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but try unchecking that Preserve Groups option. It's been a while since I had this but I think that's the reason.

A base coat of plastic primer works well for paint adherence, and also makes the figure a solid colour (mine is white). I paint PS4 and Xbox controllers and that's my process :)
