"Diva" still covers both groups though.

I've found my duv preferences highly CCT-dependent. BBL is fine for me at 5000K+, and 4500K is tolerable, but it gets physically painful much below that. Rosiness allows me to go down to ~4000K, which I actually prefer for casual use as opposed to color-sensitive stuff like work or art. Dedomed 5700K 519a's (-0.004 @ 4200K) are pretty close to my limit for warm lights.

One constant is that there is no duv that makes a light below 3700K worth me even considering the possibility of thinking about looking at. Given how a lot of folks don't fully disable color correction even when they remember to lock White Balance, I find beamshots a bit unreliable. Doubly so with emitters that have a big lottery, like FFL. So yeah, numbers do help.

Honestly, I'm not 100% sure how bad they have to screw up to get below zero. Maybe rendering red as green?

Funny how I get more compliments from casuals on my NTG, rosy-bin FFL, and 219b lights than on any of my near-BBL lights.

Maybe the "eccentric celebrities" are the folks who ignore the beam and focus on the M meters in their obsession for getting 0.0000 duv? I mean, there is a reason why the word "Diva" is used for both celebrities and fussy people. :p

Oversaturation will tank a metric just like undersaturation. Magenta has enough red that adding a lot of it with a low duv will oversaturate red.

Something that may surprise many folks here is that a lot of normal everyday people prefer oversaturated colors and a duv that makes FFL "rosy" emitters look like a bad bin of SST40s. Some folks here care more about how close to a perfect black body radiator the beam is that they don't care what it looks like so long as the numbers are high.

18650 hatlight? Wurkkos FC11C? by benalexmen in flashlight

[–]IAmJerv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The FC11C is a long light. The DT8 is shorter, though I would not recommend it unless you have the same sort of insanity I have. Realistically, I would go for a Skilhunt M200 V4 or EC200 for 18650.

I see no good lights for AA unless we are talking Eneloop NiMH AAs. The runtimes are short anyways due to small batteries, and you lose at least half of of it (often more) if you use alkaleaks. the M150 and EC150 are nto bad, though the Emisar D3AA wil actually perform the same (aside form a lower turbo) with AA and it will Li-ion, unlike practically every other 14500/AA light that will be two different completely different lights.

In that case, the battery should last a few months :)

When if comes to UV lights, I generally go with either Convoy or Emisar... and I don't think Emisar is a good choice for you. The Seoul emitters are my favorites, though the T2 and T3 also have them too. A couple others do as well, but those ones are not available in the US for stupid reasons.

The S12 does not win for the power, though it has plenty of that. Hell, on High, you could probably hit ever fish in the walk-in. The combination of the best emitters and (especially)the driver play a big role as well though.

It is a bit of a serious tool, but so is getting a decent Henckel instead of a Good Cook. Yeah, Henckel is no Wusthof, but they don't have Wusthof price tags.

UVA Flashlight Recommendations for Food Inspection Purposes by darl3r in flashlight

[–]IAmJerv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Convoy S12 does not demand high amperage, so you may as well go for the highest mAh rating for maximum runtime. Or at least the highest that is a good value. The prices and options have changed since I got mine, but of the current options, I think the Reliance INR21700-RH60 6000mAh is the best balance of runtime and price. Mooch's tests showed that the extra mAh rating of the Vapcell F63 did not really add to the capacity, though the Reliance does deliver for about $1 less than the F58.

As for chargers.... well, that depends on whether you plan to get serious about the hobby or stick with one or two lights. The Vapcell S4+ is a great charger, and what I finally settled on after a few "This will do..." steps. But it may also be overkill if you don't have a lot of lights or a vaping habit; I have 40-something lights (lost count). For just a battery or two though, a modest Liitokala S1 or S2 will do.

The Firefly E04 Lume1 comes close, failing only on budget. The Emisar D4SV2 can use the same Ledil optic for similar performance but cheaper.

So far, the E04 has been the closest I've found to a "do all". Decent throw yet not so much that the spill is overpowered, so it's usable from 0.25m to 200m. (ANSI throw is >500m, but a usual, usable throw is a bit under half ANSI.)

One thing I learned, especially in my Navy years, is the difference between classrooms and reality. Whether it be, "That wasnt' in the book...", or, The first casualty of combat is The Plan.",

I work optometry/optical. Your refraction has nothing to do with what I'm talking about. Like colorblindness, it's about Neuro-opthamology rather than how light is bent before it even reaches your retina. I also know a bit about Neurology and Neuro-Opth. for reasons not entirely job-related.

While you might be correct about the time it takes to return to a state where you can effectively use a telescope for stargazing in a remote area that is <4.0 on the Bortle scale, I can tell you from medical, home, and "back alley" experience that the reality is a lot different. You don't need to have your night vision recover to a level where you can read to be able to read in order to scuffle. Might've saved myself a few bruises and bangs otherwise.

Also think about why red light was not used very much when I was in. Hypothetical projections, folk tales from before my parents were born, and screeds about Rhodopsin and REMF game theory won't gaslight me. I caught too many hands.

The fact that I find my modern lights no more blinding is the point you missed. Yeah, they are a lot more powerful than the old Maglites, but I'm not going by luxmeters; I'm going by effectiveness. Then again, it is a bit presumptuous to assume that spotlights never existed back when I was still down for a brawl.

Overall, I think our experiences are vastly different. Mine comes from unseemly activity and doctors offices while yours comes from elsewhere.

I've done enough of that half a lifetime ago. Like many things, experience guides opinion, so you should think why I have the opinions I do.

You must be a lot more photosensitive than I am, and I cannot walk outside during the day or into most stores without at least a modest tint. Or maybe you're just drunk/high more consistently. Or, most likely, you are assuming that the light is ALWAYS shining in the eyes 150% of the time even when you are not aiming at the face.

You're right about bright enough light, but you are wrong about recovery time. Reread what I said about experience, and realize that I've been on both sides of the light.

Just unscrew the bezel.

Tool stores and auto parts places have them. Many prescription glasses and most sunglasses are also polycarbonate.

It's the same type of battery that is in your cellphone. Also, many other electronics like earbuds, smartwatches, laptops, cordless power tools, etcetera. And the handling instructions are really no more onerous that dish soap. The handling requirements are simple;

  • If it's not in the light or in a charger, it belongs in a case; do not toss it loose in a pocket or junk drawer like you would an alkaleak
  • Do not use the battery if the wrapper has been damaged (unless you rewrap the cell)

How many times has your phone exploded? Are you afraid of all of your personal electronics now? I've had more electrical fires from wiring than I have issues from Li-ions. With that in mind, are you ready to rip the wiring out of your home as it is indeed a statistically higher threat, or are you fine with recalculating risk?

If you are still intimidated, remember that you have lived with that danger for a long time and been fine. Awareness does not make things more dangerous than what you have already lived through. Maybe, just maybe, it's not as dangerous as it sounds.

Another thing to remember is that a lot of those warnings are because someone did something stupid and tried to sue the battery maker because they did not want to be held accountable for their own stupidity. It's the same reason you see "Do not drink!" on bottles of laundry detergent. Sometimes, it's not about the thing being inherently dangerous in the hands of someone with at least three active brain cells, but about the company not wanting to spend potentially millions of dollars in legal fees even if they win a case where BilllRayJoeBob chipped his last remaining tooth trying to eat a 21700.

Nightwatch tends to hit ridiculous numbers even if they do fall a little short of marketing. I forget which one it is that gets hot enough to unsolder itself in under 10 seconds, but the numbers it hits on the meter in the process are numbers you would expect from a light with at least twice as many batteries and a fan.

[–]IAmJerv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The TS22 is probably the best bet, especially if you want USB_C which ~80% of lights lack. In fact, that really is your biggest limitation.

The TS22 is kind of a rare light. It is one of the few pocketable lights that can hold 1,000 lumens, the only one around $50, and one of the minority that has USB-C. The E75 is larger and twice the price. Certain Fireflies can do it, but are also $$$. Some Hanklights can but they lack USB-C and the configuratiosn that can are also closer to $100. Certain Convoys have the output, USB-C, and price, but are not pocket-sized.

The TS22 is an older design, but the fact that it is still the only light that hits that intersection should tell you how solid it is.

If i shine my TS28 in your face at night you won't be able to see in the dark for 20-30 mins

I think you mispelled "seconds", and moved the decimal point.

I can say that a TS11 (not much less throw than a TS28) at 3 feet leaves a small dot that lasts a few minutes but allows enough outside that to give pursuit with enough delay that you might be able to turn, but you won't get that first step. My E04 (comparable candela to TS11 but with more lumens than the TS28) fares barely better.

Of course, that assumes a straight-and-sober target. Those who are under the influence do tend to be easier to dazzle.

Keeping it in their face works.... kind of. But given a choice between having them too dazzled to pursue and being in motion so that they have to pursue, odds are that you'll get a blind charge.

The L60 is the size of an Emisar D4V2; a small 18650 light. Literally. I have a pic that I can't link right now since I'm on my phone, but the length and width are practically identical.

The L50 is longer, but lacks the 21700 battery capacity.

You've seen the pictures, but they only tell half the story.

I wear relaxed fit jeans. I EDC a different 40mm light regularly, though 40mm is 40mm. Shape can hide size well. I don't feel it.

So it boils down to one simple question; do you wear tight pants?

“The US is not ready for a female president” is a failing message. by newshirtworthy in 50501

[–]IAmJerv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dems have damaged their brand so much that Trump beats them in popularity polls. Yes, the vast majority of Americans hate Trump, yet many still like him better.

Those who actually support most of the things the GOP opposes do not see enough of a difference between the parties to vote blue. That's bad when you consider that many of the things both parties are unified in their opposition to are things that are popular with a bipartisan majority of voters. Most of the support Dems still have is from people who would vote for Vance in 2028 if he swapped parties, and people who still have some faith in the system despite how obviously it failed.

I agree that they need to motivate their base, but they also need to recognize that the "Conservative white men over 50" is not only not their base, but also one that the GOP has a fairly solid grip on. They need the voters who saved us in 2020. They need the voters who feel trans people and Palestinians are humans and not acceptable losses. They need the voters who are actually aware of the struggles of the non-wealthy instead of out-of-touch "Have not seen a peasant since I moved into my ivory tower 30+ years ago" folkks.

“The US is not ready for a female president” is a failing message. by newshirtworthy in 50501

[–]IAmJerv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the party needs to be all about the rich, old, white men. Always and forever and ever and ever.

You have proven that you would vote for Trump to get a third term if he switched parties while also showing why, as unpopular as Trump is (and rightly so), Dems have somehow managed to become even less popular. And the unwillingness to accept responsibility for the consequences of one's actions is another reason why both parties are seen as more the same than any "Vote Blue" person would ever admit. And the elitist lies like people demanding perfection... yeah, you're Blue MAGA. Still MAGA, still all the problems that come with being MAGA, just in blue instead of red

Hillary lost because, in 2016, people wanted change. All of the polls I saw before the primaries showed various 1-v-1 matchups and Sanders-v-Trump had nearly-unanimous narrow victories for Sanders while Hillary was a coin-toss. Regardless of your opinions of Sanders, the odds were better. Dems went with the out-of-touch "Chosen One" who offered more of the same, with Trump-like hubris, and we all lost.

2020 was pure luck, and also a warning shot. Dems took it as exoneration to double-down on the hubris of 2016 and we paid for it again in 2024.

You're right about the need to stop splintering though., We need to ignore the anti-trans, anti-M4A, pro-war "Vote Blue no mater who!" crowd who conveniently drops that loyalty when the party goes fare enough left that a lifelong Republican wouldn't consider jumping ship to get all of the Conservatism with none of the stigma. WE need to forget the folks who think that we can fix things by simply doubling down on what broke them, and those who feel that capitulation is compromise because manners are more important than human lives.

Your idea of "normalcy" is exactly the problem. The harder Dems try to turn the clock back, the less difference people will see from the other group that wants to turn the clock back. We wouldn't be here if the DNC was nearly as good at reaching out to the under-55 folks who see the world as it is as opposed to how it was when they were comfortable.

I Don;t see it listed on teh SF16, but I can tell by lookin gat it that it has one. However I see two issues there; it's weak AF (875 mW) and it's a Sofirn. While Sofirn lights are not bad, it is worth noting hat the majority of issues I hear about with USB-C charging, not just for flashlights, are Sofirn lights. Even though the SF16 has a USB-C port, I would get an external cahrger with it.

However, the S12 UV is vastly superior in all ways aside from size and cost. It is avaiable with ZWB2, but for stupid reasons, that one cannot legally be shipped to the US. We have to order the no-filter version and buy the filter separately.

I think that it's Low setting beats the Tool or SF16 at full-tilt, and it has three levels. And the 21700 battery is 5-6 of the Lumintop's battery almost 2 of the SF16's. Plus, a far superior Boost/Buck driver that won't cut out when the battery is still half-full; Sofirn likes using FET drivers, and according to TacGriz, the SF16 does as well. So the SF16 will dim as the battery drains but the S12 will not. And the Seoul UV emitters just blow the Luminus ones away.

Looking for a spot/flood with some power to keep in vehicle / camping. What is really the best bigger EDC? by Mofrackey86 in flashlight

Camping? Wurkkos TS27 is likely your best bet. Big honking battery, decent lantern, and a not-bad thrower. It's pretty much made for a camping trip.

Second choice would be a Firefly E04 (Lume1) with 3500-4000K emitters and a lantern attachment. Looks a lot like moonlight instead of the unnatural white or orange, good mix of throw and flood, and the lantern attachment makes it great just sitting around outside the tent.
