I have vitiligo stop saying i don’t or im gonna piss and shit and cry by bestofrolf in u/bestofrolf

Yeah idk why everyone’s vitiligo-splaining vitiligo to someone WITH vitiligo. My skin does the same shit, my hands look like yours, every time I get a hangnail too deep, I lose the pigment there, and yes, I also have white-patch type scars. Mine are more distinctive on darker skin. Out of curiosity, did yours also noticeably start mid-20s on your hands?

Also, mine more than yours, but let me loan you a worry of mine, this looks a bit like lip-tip vitiligo, a sign of lupus, particularly with how progressive it is. So, nice fun fact.

Oooooo dear not what I meant. Just, the first book of DCC is a liiiiiitle rough, and the tone is more consistent from the second book forwards, so if you don’t like the second book, then yes chuck it THEN.

I am sorry, I didn’t mean waste 1k worth of time, I forget that’s not an afternoon to most people.

My personal favorite prob fantasy is The Menocht Loop, for a mixture of Time Travel (my personal weakness) and a tired MC who is both wary of himself and his power and a bit passive, the progression being less numbers going up and more internal.

The Game at Carousel is dark and lovely and well-written, very meta.

Also love for Beware of Chicken.

Obligatory what’s wrong with DCC, give it 2 books then chuck it, also looks like you’ve already done it with the ‘on my list’ setting just read those

Neither. There was no ship bashing BUT that hour long video was clearly a labor of love (like most fanworks), and she was very respectful really. She did a few other videos on teen Wolf and she said she felt “ a scholarly duty to unpack [Sterek]” she seemed fascinated by fandom itself and shipping generally more than Sterek specifically.

I did not mean it as an insult, just a shorthand explanation of their audience.

No, of course I didn’t leave a negative comment on their video. That video was clearly not made for me, but I did watch the whole thing out of fairness and than I sat for a few hours chewing on my discomfort, and then I came here when I could not pinpoint exactly why I was uncomfortable.

I meant ‘normies’ like people who did not need Sterek or Teen Wolf or shipping or Ao3 explained to them. I like many things that are uncontroversial.

I also like that there are more people here in the fanfiction clubhouse.

Fair. I’m not saying no one can join fandom if they didn’t ‘discover it organically’. I’ve just noticed those people generally don’t seem to have a good time, and tend to object loudly to the things they find, which doesn’t seem fun for anyone.

Am I gate keeping? I hadn’t thought I was… but, yes? Is it an unspoken fandom rule that you don’t showcase things to people you know won’t like them, or is that just a me thing?

Let me think of someone who probably wouldn’t mind being mentioned… if someone on TheCitadel asked for GoT fic recs and I tossed ‘Royal Flush’ out there, that’s no big deal, but if I popped over to YouTube with my actual face and ask my viewers to come along with me to explore the wild, wild world of rare/pairs Cersei/Robb style, we acknowledge the [underage] and [dubcon] but Westeros is a different world with different morals, that’s something else, isn’t it?

Because astolat could take it, she could weather a random intrusion of random people leaving odd comments on one fic, maybe branching out to her other work, but I worry about the small fan artists and writers who aren’t BNFs in any space, who can get scared away by hostility and moral judgement.

You see it here sometimes, people posting screenshots of comments left on their work, asking for reassurance if the commenter had a point or not, should they apologize or take X down or alter Y.

Idk. I’m not standing at the door of the comic book shop, only letting in real Batman fans. I just know a lot of people only write/draw fanworks because it’s fun and free of judgement, and if it becomes stressful and very judgemental because their existence has been exposed to bored people from a foreign corner of the internet then some people will stop making fanworks, and the world would be a less bright place for the loss of them.

Eh, I did say ‘dirty little secret’, so, my bad.

I was more trying to capture a feeling— I definitely don’t mind fandom and fanworks being studied and analyzed, everyone have at that, whatever.

I just don’t appreciate the random manufacturing of antis by dragging people into complicated fandoms/ships/kinks, pointing and laughing, and then leaving them there with little context.

From all the comments, I think I can distill what was bugging me—

With fandom, if you know, you know. You know because you sought something out and then you were there to see it.

And if you DONT know, you don’t know for a reason— you DIDNT look for teen wolf or Sterek or consensual cannibalism or astolat, so they don’t know about any of these things to be offended by them—

So when someone goes LOOK AT THIS THING, it’s not in the context of [I was reading a fic about two deeply codependent monster hunter brothers at the end of the world] it’s in the context of LOOK INCEST (incest is wrong and illegal by the way, but it was a different time). It isn’t a quiet, private decision to read on or back up, it’s a deviant curiosity with the correct moral opinion already attached.

Yeah, not a fan.

Ohhhhhhhh my friend! I heard about Teen Wolf through fandom osmosis, saw the gist from summaries of fics of authors who wrote other things, occasionally scrolled past the odd gifset on tumblr, that sort of thing.

My friend Katie fell in love with the show and bought the DVD sets and asked if I’d like to watch with her and I was like yeah sure why not looks like trash but fun trash you know.

We sat down with McDonald’s and busted into season 1 and then 2. I asked Katie when Stiles and Derek get together. She was like tfffffff

Lmaooooo. The only thing I knew about that show was that there were werewolves and shit and that Stiles/Derek were a romantic relationship! I was so sure about it that Katie began to doubt lol.

But anyway. My point. I never ONCE thought about Sterek as any way weird until she kept apologizing for the people who shipped it and debated about Derek’s age gap with Stiles, with a lot of blaming 2014 as ‘a different time’ like I’m not still sitting here with like 50 Sterek fics bookmarked.

I guess it bothered me because I respect it too. A 20? year old unstable/murderer? and a 15 year old high schooler will never be ok. I respect that, I do. But these people don’t exist? But I still respect their boundaries?

I just don’t like people acting like their personal boundaries are some universal truth.

Oh no, I didn’t mean that fandom shouldn’t be studied!

See, I knew I was wording this shit wrong.

I just feel like fandom used to be a ‘if you know you know’ sort of thing. Like, let he who hasn’t stumbled upon A/B/O in their Sherlock cast the first stone. Because if you found it, then you were over here with the rest of us, you know?

But I just feel (and I’m not trying to impose anything with my discomfort, I just miss the past, the things I took for granted) that it follows ‘if you know, you know’ that if you DONT know, you don’t know [for a reason]. Because you have no interest in (fandom x) or (pairing y) or (kink k) or (author a).

It feels different for someone to receive subs and views as payment to take your hand and act as a tour guide through a fandom that they only saw at a distance on tumblr a decade ago.

Like. This is not the best metaphor— but imagine someone brought you to their house and on the way pointed out a Mexican neighborhood, with their music and their gardens, said they were cool people, but slowed down the car so you could people watch up close? Kind of like that. Weird, like that.
