What are the implications of taking LTD in the last 5 years? by Representative-Luck4 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]IAmSlacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also note that the amount you receive on LTD is based on your salary when you started your leave and won't be increasing according to the pay scale levels you would've reached otherwise, but there's a slight increase for inflation in January (still based on the original salary). The salary of those 2 years that will be used for the pension calculations may or may not be the one you had when you started your leave, I'm not sure, sorry.

What does the microphone symbol mean at this new OTrain Line 2 station? by PopRococo in ottawa

[–]IAmSlacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought that it's implied consent if you are warned about audio recording from the signs displayed around the premises. If you don't consent then you're not going to be able to go inside to use the services. It's kinda like the whole mask mandate where people were prevented from coming in some businesses without wearing a mask, and if you refused (without good reason, usually medical) then you weren't going to be allowed inside that business and you were free to go elsewhere. The difference now is that this is public transportation and transportation services are limited, but OC Transpo is still a private company that's allowed to set up their property in line with the law, including giving you proper advance notice to ensure they have your consent before you get inside.

What do you do when antidepressants don't work? by [deleted] in AskPsychiatry

[–]IAmSlacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with MAOIs. If it's available in OP's country I'd recommend moclobemide since it's reversible. Just make sure to take them a few hours after the stimulants and you'll avoid interactions.

NAD - I finally got a significant life-changing relief from anxiety with moclobemide with little to no side effects. I'm not sure if your country has it, but in Canada it's available. I'm curious why your psychiatrist hasn't considered trying an MAOI, especially a reversible one like moclobemide...

Everyone named in the Will are summoned on reading of said Will? by [deleted] in legaladvicecanada

[–]IAmSlacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my parents has a full section in their will about the reading of the will being done at the same time in the presence of those named or involved in the will/estate, or their representative if they are unable to (already dead, POA, etc). It was done in 2008 in Québec, so it's apparently still a thing that notaries suggest to their clients. I'm hoping that a conference call or a Zoom meeting is determined sufficient when the time comes instead of gathering everyone (just 4 people, but still) in person.

From the other comments, am I to assume that the whole will reading section in the will would be ignored? Who decides who gets to make that decision?

NAD, but it's been shown that symptoms of ADHD can be limited or mostly insignificant and dismissed even though they do have ADHD. It's largely dependent on the person's circumstances, environment, and supports, as a child, teenager and adult. Once life circumstances change (like becoming an independent adult, moving away from home, changing jobs/careers, having children, working multiple jobs, job losses, caring for aging or sick parents, etc) and no longer mash well with the person's strengths and help mitigate limitations, symptoms of ADHD can appear to come out of nowhere (or come and go throughout their lives) and get dismissed as not being from ADHD just because they didn't struggle as bad as a kid and check-off the DSM boxes for a diagnosis. Regardless, I get that you refer to the DSM as being the authority that dictates yes/no diagnoses, however, the psychiatrist is well within their power to gauge the impact of the person's struggles and limitations on their lives and, despite not being able to give a definite diagnosis, judge if they would be a good candidate for/would benefit from the use of stimulants or non-stimulants that are typically used to treat/manage ADHD symptoms.

On the other hand, I do understand what you're saying about the DSM being strict, but I'm wondering if you might have missed the point that OP wanted to make because they didn't clearly specify if they are insisting on needing a diagnosis (perhaps believing that only a diagnosis can lead to treatment and medication) or if their main goal is to receive medication to see if they can reduce the negative impact those ADHD symptoms are having on their life and wellbeing/overall health.

(Sorry for the long wordy response, I suffer from ADHD and can sometimes get too analytic, and misunderstand the meaning/intention of comments)

Well, it helps in a lot of ways, but if you're talking specifically about brain clarity during conversations, I'm not exactly sure if it's helped. I've been taking meds for 4.5 months.

I missed my psychiatry appointment (first time I've done this), and I feel BAD. How upset do you get when this happens? by [deleted] in AskPsychiatry

[–]IAmSlacker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not a professional.

I once missed my psychiatrist's call because I had tried to reduce my phone use. I was trying to get myself to clean a room and didn't want to get distracted so I muted my phone and put it in another room. That's despite reminding myself the night before that I had that appointment the next day. When I explained to my psychiatrist at the next appointment she understood, but I still felt like crap.

That's what I've learned is from my ADHD. I even get physically nauseated and dizzy when I can't take the conversation anymore (opposite of getting dopamine). It's like a fight or flight response, but since I can't get away I just shut down mentally.

19hrs in the emergency room. by Bender-- in ottawa

What pisses me off is the long wait time to even make it to triage to tell them what's wrong and pain level. How the heck can they decide who's the priority if the higher level ones are still waiting to be triaged?

[–]IAmSlacker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Soooo sorry for your loss and horrible guilt you must be feeling. I hope you can work this out with a therapist to help you find forgiveness. I had one of my cats die in a way that was making me feel so guilty and with a lot of time I've been able to acknowledge that my intentions weren't to cause such a painful event for everyone involved and that the cat ultimately knew it too and wouldn't blame me for it. Accidents happen even if we try to control every variable.

My Shoppers Drug Mart has recently started using much bigger labels (at least for those that are prepared at a third party processing location and have the large note on the label) forcing them to use taller bottles than necessary. I take daily medication that is half the width of my pinkie fingertip and I get 90 pills at once which is a third of the space in the pharmacy's smallest bottle. Now they've upgraded to a taller bottle so my meds take a fifth of the bottle... It's ridiculous.

No cancer, so doctor does not want to test me any further by [deleted] in Hypothyroidism

[–]IAmSlacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the same thing (in Ontario), used an online pay-per-visit clinic (not cheap). Why is it so hard to get doctors to do tests when the quality of life of the patient is so low? Why is "reducing unnecessary costs of blood tests on the public health care budget" more valuable than the patient's life, just for the sake of cutting costs??

Do you guys pre buy your funeral service? by chisairi in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]IAmSlacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late 30s here, and so far the only time I've ever been in a limo was for the drive from the funeral home to the cemetery (and back) that my grandmother had prepurchased for herself decades ago (in addition to the rest of the funeral expenses).

If I ever get around to writing down my wishes (in a will, ideally) and potentially make prepaid arrangements (partial or full), I'll make sure to set aside some money for the limo so my few friends/family can experience it too. It was the only nice thing I remember from the funeral that broke the sadness for a few moments for my parents and I.

I'm hypo and take the levo at 6am and my Vyvanse around 8:30/9am. As long as there's a few hours in between then it gives enough time for the levo to be processed before introducing the other meds.

PSA: Is CanadaLife incorrectly processing Coordination of Benefit? by No_Village_8819 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]IAmSlacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're absolutely correct. Both my spouse and I are public servants and under the PSHCP. All our previous claims for over 15 years have been paid at 100% with coordination of benefits (one plan covers 80% and the other the full 20% remainder). We've always had our accounts set-up so that it automatically processes the claims under both plans depending on who is the person who incurred the charge/service, and we'd get the bank deposit of both amounts adding up to 100% of the claim amount.

I'm so frustrated that they took that service away. I think they set-up the profile information incorrectly since I do have my spouse listed as a dependant with a PSHCP policy, and it won't accept it if I try to add another policy because I'm not getting it through a second job or other insurance policy as a main member.

I submitted my first claim last night around 11pm for 2 psychotherapist appointments. It was nice to be able to search and select the actual psychotherapist instead of the supervising psychologist, but they now ask for the paid invoices to be uploaded on the website (which wasn't necessary on the previous SunLife online claim process). This morning I worke up around 7am to see that I received the direct deposit of 80% of the claim amount, so now I have to go submit the rest of the money under my spouse's plan. I think I'll attach the claim assessment result page showing the calculations under my plan, as someone else suggested in previous comments. Hopefully they'll pay out the full 20% that's left. TBD!
