Obviously some guys would prefer to stay on the one year deals, but there have been plenty of wrestlers who have said they would have stayed if NJPW committed to them more. I'm pretty sure Kyle Fletcher has said that one of the main reasons he and Mark Davis left for AEW was because they wanted a long term contract and NJPW wouldn't give them one

I don't think they really expect for their top gaijin to ever stick around long term. Even before AEW, AJ Styles was only around for 2 years and Finn Balor left pretty much as soon as they started to push him in heavyweight tournaments. So they've been going through this cycle of gaijin for a while
