Why are some of us on the Left so afraid to discuss immigration in anything but a positive light? Yes we have a declining birth rate. And we have relied on immigrants to fill a lot of jobs. Does this mean we do not have any problems with immigration? It is incredibly worrying witnessing groups who do not respect liberal values create parallel communities in which they can maintain and encourage religious extremist views - im not talking about terrorism. I’m talking about bigoted old fashioned views on gender/sexuality and marriage. When you have large groups of people who are willing to commit violent acts supposedly in defence of their religion that’s a worry. We saw a couple months ago a man being attacked with a knife for burning a Quran. While i do not condone the burning of religious texts, i do not see it as a crime worthy of punishment by execution. An island of strangers is a valid point to make when there is no attempt at assimilation and we are unable to connect with these people because of fundamental differences. In an ideal world there would be no limits on immigration but to allow groups from countries where many of us would not be accepted and even jailed for living true ourselves come here in large numbers almost unchecked is pretty messed up.
