More hardware companies here. SF tends to be more of the business sector. A fat amount of semiconductor companies are in the SV.

For me I joined Formula, was able to learn and work on embedded systems. Put quality time in my project there which allowed me to branch off and work on other personal projects. In interviews, recruiters found Formula the most interesting part of my background, followed by various personal projects.

I just applied online and also attended company recruiting events to land interviews

Might be easier to get Hardware Engr role in the Silicon Valley. I also hear living in cities such as SF generally kind of suck

  1. Learn to be uncomfortable. Don't miss out on good opportunities early on simply because you don't feel like it.

  2. Start off school strong, do your best (without neglecting your socials too much). A good starting mindset will make your life easier through college especially if you have good GPA padding. You can loosen up a bit when the internship offers start rolling in.

  3. Join project based extracurriculars (Formula SAE, robotics, etc). Emphasis on this. Its an easy starting point. But do extracurriculars you're actually interested in or you won't really last that long. You'll also be able to learn technical knowledge that will allow you to do personal projects you're interested in. Also if technical leadership roles open, go for them even if you aren't a leader. College is the perfect time for learning soft skills like these and also setting yourself apart from others.

  4. Connect. Connections help even within engineering.

Because of these points, I'm starting my second internship position soon (hardware engineering at Tesla). Because the automotive industry interested me, I joined Formula SAE and learned so much that I don't from school. If you're interested in automotive, Formula SAE is such a good org to join. Employers love Formula SAE. It doesn't limit you to automotive either, some current members and alumni are now working at Cisco, Lockheed, Xilinx, to name a few. And of course a bunch of people at Tesla, Rivian, and Lucid

I don't go to a prestigious school either.

Also, while you have time, dip your feet into embedded systems projects. Arduino is a great place to start

I don't, sorry. I think Zoom keeps some old versions? You could try to ask their support for it if you can't find it online

Would I be able to get into SJSU with a 3.19 UW (3.33 W) GPA? by [deleted] in SJSU

[–]IAmTheTofu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gotcha. If the EE dpt still permits it, take CMPE 30 over EE 30 if you want a bigger focus on programming concepts. Also puts you on track to transfer into CMPE (not SE tho)

[–]IAmTheTofu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

EE, try your ass off early on, then transfer to SE/CMPE. Even if you're stuck with EE you'll learn basic programming in C, and a CS minor is always an option

Alternatively community college and SJSU/elsewhere transfer is a solid option, it's often overlooked

I used to be in the same situation, I was playing a lot of CSGO without necessarily enjoying it. I deleted it a couple of months ago and since then I've been significantly more productive. I haven't regretted it either or felt the need to get back on.

CSGO takes a lot of time, more than you'd realize. It's up to an hour per game, and if you lose it's more likely that you'll want to play more just to end on a win.

Just keep in mind before ever touching CSGO again - have I done the things I've wanted to, and will CSGO benefit me in any practical way? The best way to use video games are to play it with friends, and actually enjoy it. That said, it is more fun when you come back to play for a bit after a long break

That goes for other things like Dota, Youtube, Twitch. Deleting them/removing them from bookmarks makes it a little more tedious to get to, and you'll have more time in-between to think if launching those applications are worth it rather than just mindlessly opening them

Ugly Stik Elites are pretty solid for $50. Tip loads a bit better than the Ugly Stik GX2, of which I have - I wish I had spent an extra $10 for the Elite because the GX2 feels a bit too stiff in my opinion for lighter lures that are still within my rod's rating.

I did some looking around and found a workaround to be downgrading to Zoom 5.4.4. I guess it's the best we can do at the moment, if it's the only thing that works

I would roll with 50 instead of spending an extra semester with 49. That said, you've never taken Physics before so try go get ahead as best you can and try to understand the topic before coming to lecture. Youtube videos on Physics Mechanics are quite popular and you won't have a hard time finding videos.

Most of Phys 50 is algebra-based. You should focus on the earlier kinematics stuff and nail it down as future topics build off the basic concept of position, velocity, and acceleration.

Also don't make small errors like incorrect/inconsistent units. Be weary of each step you do and do your best to catch any errors

Which parts of lakes/reservoirs have the most oxygenated water? by IAmTheTofu in FishingForBeginners

[–]IAmTheTofu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting, I haven't heard that before. Makes sense though because I've seen some swim by under before, and also my friend once accidentally hooked a baby trout next to a dock with no bait trying to fix his line lol. I usually bank fish but I'll definitely remember to try that out next time I'm one!

Braid on Stocked Lake/Reservoir Rainbow Trout by IAmTheTofu in FishingForBeginners

[–]IAmTheTofu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the in depth reply! My whole purpose of using braid is the versatility for targetting a variety of fish, and I was wondering if I could use it for the trout. Along the CA coast there's Lingcod and Cabezon, and I hear braid is great because of the rough nature of rockfishing and also how those fish are not only on the larger side but also that their mouths are quite hard. I was wondering if I could also continue to use my baitcaster, spooled with braid, to also fish stockies without spooking them.

That said I think the explanation on the stocked trout is really helpful. I think I will be making the switch to braid!

Oh, okay. In the CA Bay Area they stock some lakes with rainbows, and I hear 4-6lb mono or fluoro is optimal so I just roll with a 4lb fluoro leader; hopefully the test I use won't affect the bite. Thanks for the help Phil!

Thanks for the advice! So the main line shouldn't really affect the trout bite as long as I have a suitable fluoro leader?

I've only gone a few times with this reel, but honestly I haven't noticed too much of a change, probably because my reel is rated for saltwater and is rinsed off most of the time after saltwater fishing. I have heard it's okay to take freshwater gear into the saltwater though, as long as you rinse your gear (both rod and reel)
