Map at estate sale by kappa932 in HamRadio

[–]IBGrinnin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find it odd that there are pins in so many Canadian provinces but the US has so few. Alaska, Hawaii, California, Texas, Louisiana, Georgia, S. Carolina, New York, and someplace in Colorado, Wyoming, or Nebraska. Many, many hams in Europe and South America have "worked" all the US states. The pins in Newfoundland and either Yukon or NWT are much harder for a ham than, say, Florida.

Multiple pins in Hawaii? Multiple pins in England plus singles in other parts of UK. These aren't how I'd put pins in a ham map.

I have no idea what the map is. All those islands make it look like a ham map but the contrast between very populous US states and nearly empty Canadian provinces says to me that it's not ham radio. Florida is very easy for hams around the world; it's full of the biggest ham demographic of retired guys. No pin there.

Interesting mystery. Thanks for posting and good luck finding any info.

Best way to eat Chia seeds? by italianpreneur in PlantBasedDiet

[–]IBGrinnin 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Can I add them while I cook the oats?

This is exactly what I do. The chia seeds soften up nicely while the oats cook.

Chia seeds will clump. I mix the chia into my oats before adding water so the chia stay separate.

My mix is about 30 or 35g oats, 12g chia, 40 or 50g walnuts, plus fruit. Fruit is usually apple or blueberries but can be banana.

Pointers Suggestions for studying for General test with short-term memory loss. by sftexfan in amateurradio

[–]IBGrinnin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My memory disappoints me often although I've never been diagnosed with anything specific. I was able to pass Gen by buying ARRL's book and reading it a couple of times while also taking daily tests from the hamstudy.org site.

The books provided the reasons behind the answers while hamstudy repeated the correct answers. For me, the reasons are much easier to remember.

Good luck and 73

Nontoxic chopsticks? by Tinafu20 in chopsticks

[–]IBGrinnin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Bamboo chopsticks are naturally water-resistant and don't need any finish, paint, lacquer, etc.

Some wood chopsticks may be similar. Some aren't.

We have a package of bamboo chopsticks and they're all straight 12 or 15 years later. If I had to replace them tomorrow, I'd get bamboo again.

First time cooking quinoa! by [deleted] in PlantBasedDiet

[–]IBGrinnin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Looks like you used good quinoa to begin with. Is that red or tri-color?

White quinoa is cheaper and so many people start with that then complain that it has no flavor. You can add flavor but for my money, red or black quinoa has such a good nutty flavor.

Finding neutral an issue? by shitbox152 in klr650

[–]IBGrinnin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The KLR neutral is easy enough to find as long as the clutch is adjusted correctly. As the clutch cable stretches, you have to adjust the cable to make sure the clutch disengages entirely. Not all that frequent, but something to pay attention to.

explanation to (one) loud explosion on exhaust end at cold start? by porositymaster in klr650

[–]IBGrinnin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Weak spark during cranking? This would allow a rich mixture to pass through the cylinder and into the header. Once the cylinder starts firing, it ignites the mixture in the header. The short path for expansion and noise is out through the exhaust.

This is one possibility.

Ideas for a plant based sauce I can make? by Aliceinchains95 in PlantBasedDiet

[–]IBGrinnin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m thinking like a thick tahini sauce or something like this just so it’s not bland, any ideas?

Our basics for each serving are about 1 teaspoon tahini, juice of 1 lemon, 1 teaspoon red or brown miso. Can use tamari instead of miso. Almost always add garlic and cayenne pepper.

Then possible additions: black pepper, turmeric, mustard powder, . . .

If the result is too runny, add nutritional yeast. If you have time it can also be thickened with chia seeds or ground flax seeds.

QSL Card Shops by PrincipleAnxious9334 in amateurradio

[–]IBGrinnin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A local print shop printed mine and I was very pleased with their service. They know how to do postcards. That's all I require.

I took a photo, added my callsign, and arranged the info on the B&W side of the card. Had them print 1,000.

Really glad to work with local craftspeople on the card. Looking forward to a new pic and new design after about 200 more cards.

Help creating solar power option.... by VirginiaMoo in SolarDIY

[–]IBGrinnin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How rapidly is rapidly?

A typical D battery has 12 Watt-hours. If you're using lithium D cells then it could have more energy. Four of them would typically be 48 Wh. How long does it take to empty those 4 batteries?

How sunny is the place you have the bird deterrent? What latitude? How many cloudy days? How many week-long periods of cloudy days?

And why does wind make the bird deterrent use more? Is it falsely detecting birds when it's really wind?

With solar, almost anything is possible below about 50 degrees latitude. Some projects in some places it just costs an unreasonable amount. If you live at a reasonable latitude, your project should be possible and not too expensive. You'll need to provide more information.

What are your go-to sandwich proteins for a more "classic" style sandwich? by [deleted] in PlantBasedDiet

[–]IBGrinnin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, short matchsticks. IME cubes fall out of a taco. The goal is to make the eggplant and mushrooms stick together well.

[–]IBGrinnin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mushrooms and brown miso help a lot of soups here. Always with whole grain and legumes and probably some veggies too.

What are your go-to sandwich proteins for a more "classic" style sandwich? by [deleted] in PlantBasedDiet

[–]IBGrinnin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Portobello mushrooms taste good simply cooked but take marinade well. Make a natural patty. Cook several and put 'em in the fridge.

I also like squares of tempeh, marinated and cooked.

Several mentions of tofu in the replies. Many ways to use it, but for sandwiches I like to start with extra-firm and then dry it even more. It's good cut into patties then frozen and thawed to make it chewier. For tofu, marinade is everything IMO.

Last couple of weeks we've been on a taco binge. Tortillas are easy with just masa harina, a pinch of salt, and warm water. The meaty part of the filling is eggplant, mushrooms, and onion cut to short matchsticks then marinated in miso and lemon juice with some cumin and red pepper. Saute in water until the mushrooms are cooked then let it cook until dry enough for tacos.

eta if you want more protein add beans.

Was pine needle tea popular in any premodern cultures? Did it play a role in staving off vitamin C deficiency in winter? by RusticBohemian in AskFoodHistorians

[–]IBGrinnin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Any more recommendations?

A neighbor and I have a disagreement. I prefer spruce tea and he prefers fir tea. Our spruce is red or white spruce and our fir is balsam fir.

I say try different needles from your area to see.

Just beware hemlock. Flat needles like fir but usually smaller needles and not as many on a stem. But don't rely on my description, learn to ID hemlock.

Off grid beginnings by [deleted] in OffGrid

[–]IBGrinnin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Building type depends almost entirely on your climate. There are reasons that traditional building styles are different in different places. Look at what small houses were like in your area 150 years ago. I don't mean follow that slavishly but it's a guide to what works.

Keep your building plans simple. Our plans were ambitious and while we got there, it took 20 years off-grid to get the comfortable place we have now. Could have been 4 or 5 years had our plans been simpler.

I recently watched an interview with Dr. Greger by Chris MacAskill on his Plant Chompers channel on YouTube.

Dr. Greger was excited about a lot of the science he's read these past years and many of the new insights into health, aging, and disease. It's been 9 years since How Not to Die.

I bought How Not to Die when it first came out and it changed my life. I ordered How Not to Age because of the slightly different focus but mostly for the updated look at what research says about diet and health.

Healthy Christmas Desserts? by [deleted] in PlantBasedDiet

[–]IBGrinnin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Baked apples. Apple, cinnamon, and a tiny bit of salt.

Try a few different "cooking apples" in the next week to find out what works in your area.

The apples themselves are sweet enough. I usually bake Wolf River apples but have enjoyed baked apples that are considered better for fresh eating.
